McCarthy Set For Blackpool Wednesday, 18th Jan 2023 23:50 Former Blues boss Mick McCarthy is set to be appointed Blackpool manager until the end of the season.
McCarthy, 63, has been out of work since leaving Cardiff in October 2021 having taken charge of the Welshmen in January the same year.
The Seasiders, second bottom of the Championship, are without a boss having sacked Michael Appleton and his assistant, one-time Town full-back David Kerslake, earlier today following a run in which they have won only once in 11 matches.
McCarthy was Town manager from November 2012 until April 2018. Since leaving Portman Road, the former central defender has had a second spell in charge of the Republic of Ireland and a short stint as boss of Cypriot side APOEL.

You only have to look at what happened after MM left.

When another manager takes us to the championship playoffs with little to no resources then you can bemoan his reign.

I remember his Wolves side out playing us at PR on their way to the Premiership. Did wonders with what Evans gave him to spend. With money I'm sure that he would have got us up, but like many I will never forget that nightmare trio of inspirational mid fielders

If he was so good and his supporters are blaming Evans, how come he never did any good at his later clubs?

Cloddyseedbed: interesting we share the same sentiment about his football. You get 3 up arrows , I get 3 down arrows. … guess it's how you say things then, because his football style IS terrible. Good luck Mick and good luck Blackpool.

His remit in Cyprus was to make the club Cypriot champions. After 8 weeks and 5 defeats in 8 games plus the loss of 100 balls that was kicked out the ground into the street. The club could take no more.

Vandusen. The only numbskulls on here, are thr ones who believe we wouldn't have been relegated if he was here. I guarantee you, we would. It's no coincidence nearly every team he's left have been relegated the next year. It's bcse he's ruined every team he's been at. So his replacement stands bo hope. And with him here, crowds, which were already diminishing fast, would have dropped even more which would have guaranteed relegation. He was the right man at the time he came here, but should have gone much earlier. No other manager would have survived after the cup defeat to Lincoln. But guess that's Evans fault for not sacking him then. If he had done, the toxic atmosphere that came over the next year or so, wouldn't have happened, and whoever came in , would have had a chance of keeping us up. As it was, it was done too late for us, with no money to spend. And anyone thinking if he'd had more money we'd not have been relegated, we would. Bcse whoever he'd have bought, he'd have played the same boring negative football. Made attacking players into defensive ones( Anderson, Ward, for example). His football will work to a,certain extent but in the end, will always lead to failure. His brand of football died years ago. Having said all that, I wish him well.

It was Mick that kept Town the Championship and got them to the play on a shoestring. Football was never the best but then it was not with the next 3 managers. At last Town are on the move

Tricky one for us. He certainly saved us in his first season and will probably do the same for Blackpool. We were within a shot of the promised land in the play-offs but sadly fell short. Sure he kept us in the Championship and his players loved him, but his style of play became boring, partly down to budget but also his stubborn attitude and eventually his relationship became toxic with the fans. Would have been interesting to see what he would have achieved with some investment in the Team by Evans. OK we are currently stuck in League One but our football now is night and day compared to the dark times of Keane, Jewell, McCarthy, Hirst and Lambert.

Jesus, some people wishing MM was still here and we were treading water in the Championship with 4k crowds and Evans still in charge. Go give your heads a wobble!

He's a strong man manager. As a caretaker most teams could do much worse. Personally didn't like his (lack of) style, but appreciate he's a decent person who isn't going to make rapid crazy changes.

If you're looking to appoint a manager to save you from relegation then McCarthy or Allardyce (on a short term deal only) is your man. I expect him to keep them up, in which case Blackpool may be tempted to extend his contract but history indicates that if they do they will probably have to sack him later. His "pragmatic" and outdated approach produces dull defensive football which fans can only stomach for so long, and as he won't embrace any new ideas or accept any criticsm it always ends acrimoniously.

As a comparison, Joe Royle got Town to “play on a shoestring” too. Which style of football would you prefer to watch out the two?

Would love to see Mick on Strictly. If there was a dance that involves 1 step forward and two back, he's in with a chance of the golden globe

I was never one to doubt him as a manager, though I did question his motives for staying at a Club with so little investment and essentially protecting Evans, whilst boasting about the job he was doing keeping us up. It was an achievement but should never have been acceptable, and could/did only end in eventual relegation. But with respect Suffolkboy; "Principled, honest, loyal and respectful"? Really? I guess you were not in the away end at Norwich with your young son, whilst he verbally abused us in public, on Sky, and in front of Norwich fans which included some of our family members. Have never, could never, forgive that. The fact that Evans did not sack or even suspend him on the spot still speaks volumes about how the 2 of them felt they could treat OUR Club. McCarthy always made out he was a 'big character', a 'big man' but if he really was then he would have stood up to Evans or called it out rather than take his/our money and the pats on the back from his mates in the media for doing a great job on a shoestring. Am sure he will do fine for a while at Blackpool, as that is his MO. Wish him no ill will, but never darken our doors again please.

BLACKPOOL ?? - you must be desperate and ran by a load of Non Football Hoolies - to choose McCarthy over Appleton … !!! MM will only succeed in emptying your Ground for you - don't expect anything more. All he will be interested in is his Pay Slip !!
