Wednesday’s Johnson Could Face Retrospective Ban
Saturday, 11th Feb 2023 20:08

Sheffield Wednesday wing-back Marvin Johnson could face a retrospective ban for elbowing Town wideman Wes Burns in the incident which led to Town’s first-half penalty in today’s 2-2 draw.

The incident was spotted by the linesman who called over referee Geoff Eltringham, who gave the Blues the spot-kick, which Owls keeper Cameron Dawson saved from Conor Chaplin.

However, the officials were unable to identify which specific Wednesday player threw the elbow and as a result couldn’t show the red card the offence deserved.

But Johnson could now face retrospective action with footage shot from the stands clearly showing the incident.

Town themselves lost captain Sam Morsy to a four-game ban in similar circumstances after catching Accrington Stanley’s Ethan Hamilton with an arm in a game at Portman Road in January last year.

After the game, Owls forward Josh Windass outlined his understanding of the incident.

“Apparently Marvin Johnson elbowed somebody, but Marv said that he just had his arm up trying to stop somebody getting across him," he told the Sheffield Star.

“Nobody really knew what happened, but we were saying to the referee that if somebody elbowed somebody else then you need to send someone off — and he said he didn’t know who it was. So make of that what you will.

“They [the officials] just need to let the game play, especially with stuff like that. The ref didn’t even know what happened himself, and the incident happened at the far post away from the linesman with 11 bodies or something in the way. They didn’t claim for it, nobody did, so I don’t know what happened.”

And that could have cost us the win, regardless of us missing the penalty. Unlikely they'd have gone 2 goals ahead with 10 men. But will anything be done regarding the player involved? Probably not. Only we ever seem to get done for these kind of things.

Windass "we were saying to the referee that if somebody elbowed somebody else then you need to send someone off"

Didn't happen.

Oh please. No excuses. We had a penalty and failed. Again. Score and it's a different game.

Won't make ha'path of difference to us what happens to him tbh. We failed to turn up in the first of a big must win game , f u caked up in defence yet again .. we are where we are in the league because we can't win games snd can't bloody defend. End of. Totally passed off with the szz as nd crap nearly every game.

if you cannot identify the player then just red card all the players who were in the vicinity, i am sure the culprit will own up pretty quickly if you do so....

The rules should say that if the officials cannot decide who was the culprit then the keeper automatically see red. This would lead to better sportsmanship as they would lose the keeper in the match and then the culprit retrospectively.

Did the same ref not see the goading by one if their players after they'd scored the first goal either? That was crowd incitement . Had the fans retaliated , run on the pitch , thrown things , they'd have be ejected from the ground and later gave criminal proceedings. So why are players behaving in this way not red carded ?

Something was thrown by someone in NSL after the first goal. One of the Weds players picked it up and gave it to the ref

A retrospective ban won't assist us. Sending someone off would have changed the game. We are regularly suffering at the hands of officials in this league. How many fouls did their number 14 have to commit to get a second yellow but didn't. He must have felt lucky yesterday. I was surprised to see us getting awarded the penalty.

Even at L1 this problem needs sorting. Too much at stake & enough money to fix it.
Set a minimum number of cameras required for different close up angles covering all the pitch and ref blind spots, plus VAR hybrid of letting the game continue until a 4th official has reviewed the footage and passed that info on to the ref so ref doesn't need to stop play to view a screen. Once there's a suitable gap that doesn't affect the game flow, he makes a final decision on 4th official advice and takes retrospective action accordingly.
In this case, initial penalty continues while the footage is reviewed and passed back for a red card at the next gap. Avoids ruining the flow but a balance on fairness/ sportsmanship.
Win some, lose some vs current shambles but at least fact based.

Agree that it'll make no difference but should be dealt with nonetheless. I seem to remember a few coming out in support of Sam morsy early this season for a similar incident, maybe you guys feel nothing should be done about this?!
