Maamria: We Should Have Been Awarded a Penalty
Saturday, 4th Mar 2023 20:17

Burton boss Dino Maamria was left bemoaning a “crazy 15 minutes” in which the Blues scored three times during his team's 4-0 defeat at Portman Road but felt the Brewers should have been awarded an earlier penalty.

Maamria, whose side dropped a place to 19th, was pleased with the way his team began the match and thought his team should have been given a penalty when the ball bounced up and struck Luke Woolfenden on the hand in the eighth minute.

“I thought for half an hour we were excellent,” he told his club’s official website. “We were on the front foot — we had a clear-cut penalty as well for a handball. Those decisions can change the momentum of the game for the first goal.

“After the first half an hour we had a crazy 15 minutes. What we know about this place and what it’s like when they get their tails up, and you need to manage that. When the first goal went in, I felt the game got away from us a little bit.

“Ultimately, Ipswich are a top team, there is no doubt about it. They do that to teams when you give them chances. We are much, much better than that what we showed today and when we give teams with this quality those chances, they will score goals.”

He added: “We are disappointed because we know exactly how they are going to play, we know their threats, we know they score most of their goals coming from their full-backs — that’s what disappointed me really that we didn’t stop that.

“In the first half an hour we looked like the team that was most likely to score. We kept them and their crowd quiet — it was the perfect start to the game.

“For the first goal we were loose - you cannot give players like Conor Chaplin three touches inside the box to score.

“The goals were really disappointing. Our shape was really good, we stopped them playing from the back in the first half and they looked to go long.

“But you can’t allow the quality players like theirs time and space on the edge of the box like we did, and they punished us.”

However, despite the result, Maamria took some pluses from the game: “You always have to look at the positives. I thought Conor Shaughnessy was outstanding in a back five that conceded four goals. I thought Josh Walker came on at half-time and did brilliant.

“[Charlie] Kirk came on in the second half as well and did well, but we have to move on quickly from it and learn from it now.

“I thought we were ready to come here and compete at places like this, but we’re not ready yet.

“We played with a lot of hesitation, and didn’t show enough belief — I don’t know why because we’re in good form and in a good place as a team, but our decision-making surprised me today.”

Sounds very much like a political negotiating point to hold the fort with both his team players and probably the owners/ board .
ITFC maintained the current momentum ,and developed having ridden out early pressure to out perform , outplay and ultimately out think an opponent struggling to find their better or best combination .

Who is this? Your boring tactics fell down eventually. Cry more! Another non league outfit punching above their weight.

I thought they should/could have had a penalty when Walton , who looked back to his best, came out for a cross and did not make it but flattend one of their strikers but none of their lot even appealed !

Can't say I disagree with anything he's said here really. Thought we were lucky the ref didn't point to the spot for that handball, and Burton looked good up until the first goal - after that first one we were excellent and ran out more than worthy winners.

Since when do we score “most of our goals coming from our full-backs”?

Yes full backs often start the moves for our goals Clarke started the moves for our first 2 goals today .

A fair and thoughtful assessment, they deserved to be ahead after 20 mins. Not a penalty tho.

The press they made for the first 25 minutes did stop our moves that flow form the full backs - but it is hugely energy consuming and I don't think any team can keep such a high press going for 90 minutes. As soon as their energy levels dropped and our backs could run with the ball, we tore them apart. Fair play though to Burton, at least they tried, unlike many of the bottom half teams who just park the bus.

They played the only card they could against our much better side: spend everything ounce of energy in the first 25 mins to try nick a goal, then defend like life depends on it.

It very nearly worked, they were excellent in first 20 and we made several dangerous unforced errors, and looked rushed going forward in a panicked response to it all.

But luckily they didn't score. Pen shout tenuous at best so don't agree there.

McKenna said their last game was 36 mins game time only. They spend their 36 mins of energy in this game from the first whistle, and then got smashed to pieces.

Well done Town! Of our next 5 I thought that was trickiest because of playing styles, but we creamed them and looked brilliant at times.

And yes most pleasing: we kept a clean sheet against tonnes of set pieces (throws included)

I think his comments for most part is fair. I had a good view of penalty shout and was worried that it would be given. Certainly hit his hands which were away from his body. Maybe the terrible luck / bad decisions going against us that we have had to put up with for most of this season is finally turned when MK failed to score against us in last weeks first half scramble!!! Penalties are a real lottery. There is always going to be discussion. Personally, I think when a ball strikes a hand or arm, even if the arm is extended, and the player is not even looking in the direction of the ball, it's probably not a penalty. I remember being very aggrieved in my younger days when a free kick was given against me for an incident where I didn't even see the ball as it struck my hand, let alone deliberately handle it.
