McKenna Linked With Manchester United Wednesday, 15th May 2024 09:43 Manchester United are the latest club reported to be showing interest in Blues boss Kieran McKenna.
McKenna’s success with Town has not gone unnoticed elsewhere and the Northern Irishman, who turned 38 yesterday, is understood to have been spoken to by Crystal Palace before they appointed Oliver Glasner their new manager in February. West Ham and Brighton have also previously been linked.
Now, according to French website Foot Mercato, McKenna’s former club Manchester United have made contact with his representatives as they assess possible candidates to replace Erik ten Hag this summer with a number of national newspapers following the story up.
England boss Gareth Southgate, with whom McKenna watched the Aston Villa-Liverpool match on Monday along with his Australian-born agent Frank Trimboli, has been widely tipped to take over at Old Trafford, but United are still looking at other options with the Town manager said to be among them.
McKenna joined Town in December 2021 from the Red Devils where he had been a member of the first-team coaching staff under Jose Mourinho, Ole Gunnar Solskjaer and Ralf Rangnick having initially been recruited from Spurs as U18s coach in August 2016.
Asked about potential interest from other clubs and whether his job at Town isn’t done for him yet following the 2-0 victory over Huddersfield which secured the Blues’ promotion to the Premier League earlier this month, McKenna said: “No, I love it here, it’s a fantastic club, I’m so proud to be the manager of this football club and I’ve worked so hard at it every day, so I give so much of myself and [so have] the people around me for the last couple of years. I’m just so focused on enjoying that journey.
“That sort of speculation’s been there for the last two years, to be honest, and I’ve shown loyalty to the club through that and I’m really pleased that I’ve stuck with it and achieved what we’ve achieved. There’s some big and exciting steps to come for the football club.”

He would be paid very handsomely by Manchester Utd if they did, unfortunately, offer him the job. He would probably earn so much that he'd never need to work again. I'd obviously be totally gutted if he went, but we have to understand it's a huge club and an opportunity to go there. Of course, managing their players and dressing room would be a daunting task! Is he also a Manchester United fan? The other thing in the back of his mind is that if we struggle in the Premier League, his stock could drop significantly, and he might be worried he might not ever get such a big opportunity again. I'm writing this with my head, obviously, rather than my heart!

Why would you leave a club with a really good structure on and off the pitch & fans that absolutely adore you to go to an absolute asylum of a club with a bunch of spoilt brat supporters? Sadly this sort of nonsense from the media will be something we have to deal with from here on.

Why should KMc take the Man Utd job if it was offered to him? Assuming that we are talking about the manager’s job (as opposed to assistant), then the reasons would be as follows: 1) the money. The pay is likely to be far better at Man Utd than Ipswich, 2) Man Utd is an established Prem club, we aren’t. It is very difficult to establish yourself as a Prem club; just ask Burnley if you don’t agree (they waltzed the Championship only to be relegated in their first season). 3) KMc won’t want a relegation on his CV, 4) Sir Jim Ratcliffe is sorting out the structure and appointing top people in the right places, 5) that they are in a bit of a shambles at the moment means that they are at a relatively low base that maximises his chances of improving on it and getting the credit. 6) the chance to work with top international players as opposed to the League One/Championship level ones that we have.

This is the one offer I feel he wouldn't be able to say no to. Trust that MA will have a suitable man lined up to replace McK. Obviously hope he stays though.

Nah, all paper talk for me. Man Utd is the biggest posioned chalice in world football right now, no one in their right mind would take it on unless out of a job and needing the cash. I cant see Ratcliffe choosing a rookie manager despite two promotions, as people have already commented on he wasnt, by all accounts, treated with much respect from the ego boys at Utd, so why go back when the majority are still there? - Makes zero sense to me and McKenna does not strike me as the money grabbing sort.

I know I'm a Town fan but look at it from a neutral POV. ITFC - good club management, good team management, financial backing, upcoming team (McKenna's team) and a chance to make history. The only negative is KM will have to strengthen meaning some of this year's team will move on. MUFC - IMHO have problems that are to the core of the club. They've had some good managers since SAF and all have been disappointing (no Prem title). Players are some of the best but looks like they have no structure or a real plan on the pitch. Some have no desire. Egos? Club management is shocking. No investment in the stadium in years, seem to collect players at random, and they have problems. The only positive, it is a big club (probably the biggest). What a task to take on.

I know all the fans like to speculate this and that but the answer is simple. KMc simply needs to come out and say “I’m staying”. I know it’s less to speculate about but at least everyone will stop panicking and get on with their day.

Not worried about any noise relating to Man Utd, given there are still a significant number of players there now who allegedly didn’t listen to or rate McKenna when he was there. Big time Charlies who felt KMc’s CV didn’t give him the authority to tell them how to play and why they needed to work harder than they were prepared to. If Ange starts to talk himself out of the Spurs job I’d be more concerned about that. But I do believe KMc is enjoying ITFC and enjoying life right now and wants to back himself to establish us in the Prem for the next 2-3 seasons until a big 6/7 club opportunity becomes too good to turn down.

Trying to stay level headed & not emotional, but I'm not convinced KMcK has said anything in this or other news articles to convince me he's staying and he's being as level headed and diplomatic as he's always been, giving little away. His thoughtful face at the end of the Cov away match, taking it all in, says more to me than his words. There's definitely something going on though in his head that could turn him. Being honest with ourselves, we all knew we were always going to be his springboard to bigger things, we just don't know when. We know our budget, infrastructure, players are always going to struggle with the big boys, but on a positive, we're turning that all around. We know many of our players hit their ceiling this past season, so a partial rebuild will be required to stay up at a higher level. That's not an easy thing to see happen for anyone. We probably surprised ourselves how well we did, and maybe if we're honest, we might not be as ready as we think. That might work in our favour as no one really expects us to do well in the Prem, so if KM doesn't keep us up, I don't think his reputation will suffer at all. I think its sensible to hear what Man U has to say, and if he realise if he thinks he can turn it around there like he did us. I think when he left he was looked down upon by many of the players, but now they will give him more credibility. Only thing I think will deter him is the behind the scenes chaos & if that's likely to affect his results. We on the other hand have a more structured club now, hearts of warriors as players, and seem to be moulded in KM's image and must be an emotional pull for him. I'm sure all the advice he's dished out to younger players wanting to join the big clubs too early will also ring loud in his ears as a relatively new and unproven manager at Prem level, but he will know ManU better than most. He'll know where it needs fixing and lay it down if he feels it could work, just like he has done with us. My heart says he will stay for now, but maybe only this season at best. We all understandably don't want to entertain the thought. Here's hoping he makes the right choice & stays, even if for only one season. Either way, he's done us proud.

If he goes to Man U, at least he won’t take any of our squad with him. He would need to build a new team at Man U and they need instant success and champions league. He came to us when we had already recruited most of the new squad. Man U will not be able to recruit the players they need. It would be such a hard job. They will promise him two seasons then sack him after 3 months because they are not top of the league.

Since when did some obscure french rag have the inside take on life at Old Trafford. There are highly connected UK journalists who I think would know before this lot

@eeyore except Davis probably... Anyway - no need to worry. Mick's free and we're probably going to need to be playing football that's more up his street if we're to survive... ;o) [NB - just to stress 'JOKING' before people's blood pressure rises too far]

38 years old and finished by 40 with the mess thats going on there? I seriously doubt KM is anything like that stupid this is way too soon. Surprised this speculation has even been shared to be fair, must be a slow news day...

If he were to be offered the job he'd neve turn it down. They are still the biggest club in the world don't forget and he has a affinity with them. Yes right now they are a basket case but that could be part of the appeal, to be the one that turns it around. I doubt he'd be offered the job but if he was he wouldn't turn it down and frankly who could blame him.

He's too smart as we well know! His family mean so much to him so why up sticks from a beautiful part of the country when his kids are settled at school and he is worshipped. Can't see his boy wanting to swap his Town shirt for a manc one! Like I say Kmck is way too smart !

Speculation will run amock throughout the close season. It shows the high regard in which McKenna is held. IMHO I believe he has come so far with this team and they have become like a tight knit family and I believe he wants to see how much further he can go. Hopefully he will keep the main structure of the team with a few additions. Prove himself as a Prem manager then seek pastures new. That's my heart talking. I don't want to listen to my head.

This would be a shame. This guy has shown he's got 'All the Right Moves' and has provided us with a real 'Cocktail' for success. Let's hope his heads not turned by 'The Colour of Money' and that he stays '(The) Firm' with us. We certainly need more than 'A Few Good Men' and I think next season would be 'Knight and Day' without him...yadda...yadda...'Eyes Wide Shut'...etc, etc. Oh how humanity bores a Level 8 Operating Thetan. FORWARD TO EXCELSIOR!

It will be fine. Of course he is going to be linked with this club and that club etc. Sir Bobby was at this club for 13 years and was linked all the time with various clubs in England and Europe. McKenna is a decent guy and clearly wants a crack at the Prem with us, and why not? Success always gets you noticed im afraid. No doubt some of our players may even get linked with bigger clubs, Like Davies going to Newcastle etc etc. Don't get me wrong, our gaffer will go big places in his future and we will have to get used to another manager, but for now im sure he will stick with us. He isn't ready to take that complete mess at Man Utd.

I think at his age and what has happened at this club where he has bonded the squad together into a great little unit he would like the challenge of turning us into a stable premiership club if he does that then it's any ones guess what happens next
SpiritOfJohn added 15:32 - May 15
We know he is the best manager around, but Man United fans won't know who he is, even though he already worked there before. Compare the Ipswich squad of intelligent footballers who love McKenna to the big time Charlies at Man United. The United job is too big for him at this stage of his career, and we all know they demand instant success. I can't see it happening this summer, but is almost inevitable if we continue to do well.
