Town Turn Down Boro Edmundson Bid
Tuesday, 14th Jan 2025 15:32

Town have turned down a Middlesbrough bid for centre-half George Edmundson, who is currently on a season-long loan with the Teessiders.

The 27-year-old joined Boro on loan in the summer window and has impressed for the Championship’s fifth-placed side, making 20 starts and scoring once.

Edmundson’s performances for Michael Carrick’s side have also caught the eye of a number of other Championship teams but the defender cannot play for a third club this season, having featured as a brief sub for the Blues away against his hometown club Manchester City in August.

Boro are keen to head off any potential summer interest from elsewhere by trying to make his loan move permanent during this window.

But, as per reports elsewhere, the Blues have turned down an offer, which TWTD understands to have been £350,000 now, a further £350,000 if Boro are promoted plus add-ons.

Edmundson is out of contract at the end of the season when he would be able to leave on a free transfer.

The ex-Oldham defender joined Town for around £1 million from Rangers in the summer of 2021, signing a four-year deal.

Apologies, I'm a bit out of touch with the championship this season.. Is Boro's whole squad made up of loanees?!

He is obviously not in our plans and out of contract at the end of the season..seems a no brainer to get something for him now.

Standard rule of negotiation - always refuse the first offer.

He’s worth more than when we paid £1m for him when back in league one. £2m sounds about right given there are other clubs sniffing

I’m sorry monkey_blue but a Championship club is not paying £2m for a player out of contract in 6 months.

Do we have an option for a further year on his contract thereby pushing up his value a bit?

Tbh I don't think we'll stand in his way

Hes not required here, and can't play anywhere else so this is about cash and I'm sure there will be further offers. He is out of contact in June, but Im not sure if we have an option for a further year or not, someone will know. If we do, we can always exercise that option and get a better fee then. Just like we were trying to do with Walton who is now back in the first team again.........funny old game

350k is an insult. He has to be worth more than we paid for him. Prime age and in decent form.

@Billericay12 It's really not. He's out of contract in the summer, getting something is better than getting nothing. And the fact we gave him a few minutes in one match in August means we have absolutely no leverage whatsoever as he cannot play for another team this season. So we take what Boro offer this window or lose him for nothing in the summer. The caveat is if there is a club option in the contract (not mentioned), which would give us leverage.

Billericay12not sure why you think hes worth more now than when we signed him? He couldnt get regular football here in lge1 and the championship, and as soon as weve gone up, we've let him go. Think we prob will want more money up front to sell him, but better to get some money now, rather than he just walks away for nothing in the summer. Especially with the psr in mind, with us signing players ourselves in january.

£500k plus £350k Add ons? If he’s out of contract that sounds about right.

Latte-Lath has to be part of the deal....

maybe we just don't think Boro will go up, so £350k if they do is of little/no value to us. Call it £600k now rather than £700k if they go up and I think that's a good bit of business. We won't extend his deal which is a shame as a good servant of the club who for some of his faults, I always liked, so the reality is we may as well get something for him. Intent probably still to sell him, but just wanting to squeeze a little more out the deal.

Yep Fermi_Parradox....might be other moving parts here !

If we have an option it may be worth turning down offers now. If relegated he could do a job for us again. If we stay up I suspect we will want Godfrey or similar.

£350k isn't much for a 27 year old defender playing well at the top end of the Championship. I appreciate the contract situation, but we could always offer him a new one. If we go down Edmundson could be a squad player for us next season, especially if other defenders are sold to Premier League clubs.

I’m always surprised when fans refer only to a stated transfer fee and comment on perceived vale. The annual cost to the buying club will be transfer fee amortised over the contract plus annual salary. If Boro wait until the end of the season they will be able to offer him a higher salary, however, they would risk him signing for another club offering more. If Boro secure him now they will in effect see off interest from other clubs. Our leverage lies in testing how much Boro are willing to pay in order to secure him now.

This will be the start of another transfer merry go round to force Boro to release Latte-Lath. Estimated deal date Summer 2025. Boro have a fair chance of the play offs.

Take the money - we might regret it later if he breaks a leg?

Thought I saw a current Town valuation of Delap at 42 million if true.. Surely he is worth double that .

Did Middlesbrough pay us a loan fee to get him last summer?

Do we have a recall clause for January?

Edmundson himself may prefer to look at his options in the summer as he may get a better contract then.

It's difficult to know what's going on. But surely they wouldn't be approaching us now if he hadn't given them indications that he would be open to staying there permanently. As others have said he may very well have a future with us if we go down. So, if we stay up he'll probably go for free (with my thanks and best wishes) and if we go down he'll have more decisions to make.

Monkey_blue spot on! He’s worth way more than 350,000 which is all we’re being offered as boro won’t be going up

Solid centre half and worth 2m bit because he only has 6months left! You got to take what you can! 350k+ is worth it
