Promoted Pair Linked With Hirst
Wednesday, 23rd Apr 2025 12:49

Town are reportedly looking to tie striker George Hirst down to a new deal with newly promoted Leeds and Burnley claimed to be showing interest in the Scotland international.

Hirst is contracted to the Blues until the summer of 2027, so there seems little need for panic regarding losing the 26-year-old in the close season.

However, according to Football Insider, the Whites and Clarets are both keen and Town will look to offer new terms in order to ward off any interest.

Hirst joined the club on a permanent basis in the summer of 2023 from Leicester following a successful loan spell in the second half of the previous season.

The Sheffield-born striker has scored four goals in five starts and 19 sub appearances this season.

Would rather keep him for the Championship IMHO. But if an offer came in inxs of £5m at very least, it might be worth considering. Even then, only if there is an identified replacement in the offing.

WhoisJimmyJuan - no chance we let him go for £5M; a suitable replacement would cost much more. £15M+ imo is the minimum we should consider, but with Delap going we need to keep him.

I know this is just your typical transfer rumours already starting but I do hope we keep him as I think he will be part of the driving force next season. Clubs (not just Town) in recent years have really struggled to get outright strikers in and might be hard to get more than one striker if all our strikers go

Need to keep George Hirst irrespective of whether Liam Delap goes or stays.
George was very successful when we last played in The Championship and I’m sure he will do again.
Given a fair run in the team and if he can stay relatively injury free I think he can be a good player in The Premier as well.

Hopefully just the usual rumour mill. But as has been said, need to keep hold of him and at the very least have a decent replacement lined up if not.

I don't disagree Suffolkpunch. Not 100% sure what his value might be but defo rather keep him anyway.

Top of the list of players I'd be desperate to keep. I really don't want him to go at any price, he's absolutely perfect for how we play. Mention of offers over £5m is ridiculous though, £20m+ minimum.

Paid just shy 2 mill for him if someone offers 12 mill I say take it, 10 mill profit is good, I just don't think he will ever be Town first choice striker purely because of his goal ratio and the fact we have many talented attacking players.
It is a gamble though if Delap goes, I definately wouldn't fancy going into pre season with just Al Hamedi but I could see Hirst fancying Leeds being a Yorkshire lad and quicker to get to Scotland camp, do a double deal for Davis also maybe.
I'm not sure which strikers are around, Calverton Lewin, Ings and Wilson all out of contract but getting on a bit now the latter 2. Haj Wright would be good, but the one I think we may get is Dane Scarlett Kmk had a really long chat with him after Spurs game.
Everything points to Dane Scarlett for a permenant, he ticks every box, young, scored in Championship and Europe, Prem experience and plays for England under 21s with Phillogene and Omari so would settle in, knows the lads, ground, manager he is pretty much a swap for Delap and may thrive here. Only valued at around 5 mill so it really is a like for like signing.
Was Mckenna getting business done early@

Especially if we can get double figures for Hirst

I’ll be honest, didn’t see this one coming, assuming it’s true obviously!

If it is true it’s possible there will be interest in more of our players than first thought. Not an ideal situation.

Everything points to Dane Scarlett due to McKenna chatting to him after our game with Spurs? Hot take.

Leeds have banked over £100m in sales since missing out on promotion last season, they've now locked-in promotion to the PL. So inevitably their budget is going to be substantial. I imagine they'd be more likely to try to sign Delap than Hirst.

Why on earth would newly-promoted Leeds want Davis back when he wasn’t good enough for them in the Championship? Particularly after the season he’s just had…

If an offer came in for Hirst £5m or above we should take it. He's not a prem player but good enough for the Championship but we need to build a new team not a team for the Championship.

I'm astounded by some of the responses here around what the value of Hirst is now, and in particular what his value is to us ahead of the new season, with Delap almost certainly leaving.

Hirst was unlucky he had a player like Delap ahead of him. He offers so much more than goals to the team. The way he links up with our forwards means he creates a lot. At Championship level that's gold. We can't think any further ahead than that, given that some teams struggle after relegation. Next season is crucial, and imo for success we need consistency: the likes of Hirst, Chaplin and Szmondics will offer so much versus your Coventrys, Hulls etc

He won’t go to either. Can’t imagine him wanting two consecutive relegations for a start

I would still like to see Hirst and Delap playing together up front.

Really can't believe anyone actually believes there's anything in this rumour. Total bs. Hirst is good for us at the job he does, bringing others into the play and giving them the chances to score. But isnt some1 wholl score 20 goals a season, especially not in the pl. Anyone who thinks Leeds or burnley will be looking for anything other than some1,who's likely to score double figures+ next season, needs to think again. Just another stupid rumour from a crap social media site.

I personally don't get what the big deal is with Hirst with all this link up stuff, he has only scored 15 goals and 9 assists over 3 seasons that an average 5 goals and 3 assists off a striker, you want those stats for a midfielder. We don't need someone for link up play unless we go 4-4-2 which Mckenna never will. A 10 to 15 mill profit on a player who cost 2 is really good business considering what we may only get for Delap.
Go get a young Striker like Scarlett an older experienced striker like Wilson, Ings, as we did with Moore and maybe loan a starlet from a top team be fine as we have Szmodics, Hutch, Clarke, Phillogene,Chaplin, Broadhead, Ogbene who all score goals and that's before we get to midfield.
As someone said he won't be our number one. I think with Hirst he is another sentimental one, I wouldn't mind him in squad in Champinship if he happy on bench, I'd much rather Morsy, Burns, Walton, Davis went first

Sandman180 added 16:11 - Apr 23
@Leejames99 scraping the barrel here, Scarlett was absolutely woeful when he was the club, didn't impress at Oxford either, he wasn't the answer previously and he sure isn't now.

Wilson's body is in tatters, Ings is on the shelf - do you watch football, or is this whole post tongue in cheek?

His game has more about it than just goals, he contributes so much more!
I am a Hirst fan and I hope he stays, we will need him!
