Moyes: McKenna's a Great Young Manager Doing a Fantastic Job at a Real Football Club Friday, 2nd May 2025 15:24 Everton boss David Moyes says his Blues counterpart Kieran McKenna has done a great job at “a real football club”, despite Town’s relegation back to the Championship following one season back in the top flight.
The Blues travel to Goodison Park for the Toffees’ home since 1892’s penultimate match on Saturday.
“A great, great young manager, who half the country wanted last year,” Moyes said.
“I could stand corrected here, but I think he’s the only one who’s taken a team from [League One] to the Championship to the Premier League.
“I thought I was going to do it when I was manager Preston, [League One] straight up, Championship, but I lost in the play-off final to Big Sam [Allardyce]’s Bolton.
“Kieran’s been able to take the team all the way, which is an unbelievable achievement.
“We’re all talking a lot about Wrexham at the moment, how well Wrexham are doing, amazing work Phil Parkinson has done, but Kieran has done that into the Premier League, which is so good.
“And let’s just remember, Ipswich is a club, if you’re of a generation, you remember the Ipswich Town teams [of Sir Bobby Robson], they were fantastic, they were challenging for First Division titles.
“He’s done it at a real football club. He’ll be disappointed with this season but in the main I think he’s done a brilliant job there.”
Moyes, one of the many Premier League managers understood to be showing interest in Town frontman Liam Delap, could have Dominic Calvert-Lewin back in his squad, but at best on the bench, after the 11-times-capped England striker returned to training this week following a hamstring injury.
Another attacker, summer Town target Armando Broja, is available having been ineligible for last week’s 1-0 defeat at Chelsea, his parent club.
James Tarkowski (hamstring), Jesper Lindstrøm (hernia) and Orel Mangala (knee) remain sidelined.

@spiritofjohn If fans didnt post rude comments that are not football or Ipswich Town telatedaimed at me then I wouldn't have to reply! It's not gal to comment my opinion on Kmk performance this season and thoughts on the future of the club going forward, its a forum. I would say it's more strange that you use the term 'our manager' like he is some powerful leader and how he is worshipped and can do no wrong, he has been good but right now we heading back to where he started unless things change led by the manager who has got the worst records in club history with more on horizon. He could get the record for 2 promotions and two relegations as yet, let's see your views when we are about 10th next season and Mckenna saying, change of players, had to adapt, gel, fine margins, not always easy teams coming down look at division most have played in Prem. You can pre-empt him now. He will go anyway, Scott Parker will go to Tottenham and a merry go round begins and Mckenna will jump on it

Jesus... Just came back to this site after a week. It's still the Lee James Forum. This site isn't just about you, but you have made it that way. 23 comments on this first page and nine from you, that's about 40%. What a massive narcissist you are. And no, I don't read your comments, so sorry to burst your bubble where you think everyone is coming on here just to hear your opinions.

@bangaloreblues If you didn't write non related football or Ipswich Town related. If you don't read them then why comment, you just added more nonsense it's a football forum, if anyone thinks they can call me names and I just take abuse for having a difference of oponion then no. I suggest you block my comments if you don't want to read them like others have Some people engage with appropriate replies that agree or disagree with name calling g etc. So you just wasted 5 mins of day replying to you and your the one calling me a narcassist, your the one writing non Ipswich related insults to get likes. And don't use blasphemy. Next!

Skip73 Jog on @Juggsy See ya @westsussexblue Respect your opinion but don't agree, there will be at least 10 teams with a real chance and we will be one of them at the start of season but then so was Luton. If you, like many think mckenna the man to take Ipswich up again and remain that's cool, I'd love to see that, but i dont think he will nor do i think he will be here if a Prem club comes knocking, he will go with his hero status intact before he gets sacked and tarnishes his already falling legacy, another relegation and back to square 1

@wooly74 you’re probably the same age as me, we’ve seen a lot of dross, but some great times too. Personally o don’t get the normalisation that playing in, or getting promoted from the third division was anything special, I really don’t, Plymouth have aged like an old sock too, so that was a poor six months for KM (same record as cook) followed by a really good 13 months. Next was an exceptional 12 months, as good as anything, as you rightly say, fantastic. A team with belief and momentum, achieving way beyond the sum of its parts, and KM deserves nothing but full credit…, although I watched most games that season.., and we got SO many points with VERY fine margins, like I’ve never seen in any season, born from a huge team spirit though. But equally this season, in the context of investment has been very poor, the club records aren’t good, performances getting worse, and a real lack of belief in the group. When you add that he spent all summer trying to leave us, and the money we spent keeping him, we have missed a generational opportunity. My view is Ashton was lazy. Keeping McKenna was easy. Making him the 5th best paid manager, based on EFL form came with low downside to his career. If he’d let McKenna leave because the money he wanted wasn’t realistic (it really wasn’t for where we were at) and we got relegated with a new manager, he’d be getting dogs abuse now. But with the money we spent we could EASILY have attracted a Pereira level of manager.., world class, won trophies all over the world, truly elite, and for less money. Where would we be, with this group of players, with a world class manager. Relegated? .., with him or similar, probably mid table. That’s thro difference. We aren’t league one. We aren’t championship. We WERE in the best league in the world, with the best resources in world football, that was our chance. So maybe McKenna will be that good, who knows, but he isn’t right now, and no I wouldn’t have sacked him either, unless it was ‘pay me world class money or I sign for Brighton’ and we don’t know if that’s true. Saying McKenna sensational season in the championship, makes him elite, and world class doesn’t wash. It’s nonsense, more now than ever, the gap is huge. It didn’t used to be so big…, but Jewell, Keane, Mick etc they all had those seasons in the championship, and not in the prem, they all failed to make the step and we are talking getting Wigan and Bradford promoted, and Sunderland from bottom to top in a season, so equally impressive. We’ll see on McKenna. On Ashton. That decision was him putting his career first and not taking a risk, and also not having the global contacts and networks to do it, we really can’t pretend this season has been anything but failure. It isn’t a process when you soend so much you have to sell your best assets. Leeds fascinate me. Similar position, only they actually know Farke isn’t good enough. Wonder if their top execs will be lazy and pit themselves first, keep him and say ‘we had to’ I suspect they’ll look at us and wolves.., and he’ll be gone before a ball is kicked, and if they get a world class manager, maybe that will work. Who knows. Not us old timers for sure.

Spot on @blackhorse28 I just looked at Luton players and can see that being Burns and Morsy and Chaplin all clapping fans this time next year as we too go back down to league 1, all their contracts are up and best plays and Mckenna gone and back to square 1 and league 1 We need to act now because Mckenna is going he wont want his hero status tarnished and can just say he left club in good position. Need to play all the league 1 lads vs West Ham, give them a good send off and sell sell sell and get a good manager in before Prem start their sackings. Go get Dyche, he knows how to win Championship and keep a team in Prem.
