McKenna: Everyone Will Wish Morsy All the Best at Bristol City
Tuesday, 23rd Dec 2025 15:29

Town boss Kieran McKenna says he and everyone else at Portman Road will wish former skipper Sam Morsy all the best back in the Championship with the Egypt international having held talks with Bristol City and with other sides understood to be interested in the 34-year-old.

Yesterday, it emerged that Morsy, who led the Blues to back-to-back promotions, is in advanced talks with the Robins having left Town in the summer for a brief spell with Kuwait SC which ended in September.

Since then he has trained with his hometown side Wolverhampton Wanderers, the club where he began his career.

“I know he’s in talks with Bristol City, I spoke to him the other night,” McKenna said when asked about the situation and whether a return to Portman Road might have been a possibility.

“If he decides that’s the best option for him, I think he has a couple of options, then, of course, undoubtedly, everyone will be wishing him the very best.

“There’s nothing really much else to add. He’s a legend of the club, he’s someone I’ve got an awful lot of time for personally and professionally, and he’ll have everyone’s best wishes.”

Derby County, who were keen prior to Morsy’s move to the Middle East, are also among the clubs understood to have shown interest ahead of January.

Morsy alongside Matusiwa...now that would've been an engine room.

Shame he didn't stay on for his last season here, I was expecting him too - we haven't benefited at all with him leaving and although 34 could still do a job at this level.

Huge mistake letting him go and huge mistake him leaving (from his perspective). I think it's difficult to go back, given his personality and influence, so just have to file it as one of a few stupid transfer moves in the last few windows.

Delighted he will be back at PR soon, fitting that it's under the lights too. A chance to give an absolute legend a proper send off. Hope the club arrange something.

Such a joy to watch for the time he was here and a massive fan favourite. Easily in my top 3 all time.

On the plus side, Matusiwa is a great replacement and could establish himself as a great too! As you have said Lightningboy, would have been some midfield two!!

COYB.... and Uppa Morsy

ITFC 1994, you must be skid still if he is in your top three of all time. He actually doesn’t come close. Did a great job yes, but top 3 of all time, no way.

ITFC 1994 - if he wanted to stay and was shunted out that’s a poor decision by the club. If he wanted to experience something different with a boatload of money, the club were wise to let him go. Given McKenna is still talking to him,

It looks like he wanted to go and left with the club’s blessing. But we don’t actually know how it transpired so it seems harsh to beat the club up on this at the moment - beyond using any excuse to put the boot in on ITFC as so many do now.

As for top 3, I assume you are a new supporter. If so, welcome and I see your logic. Personally, he wouldn’t make my top 23, despite me thinking him one of the best captains we ever has and a terrific player for this club.

Blueoutlook, if ITFC1994 was born in that year by any chance, he wouldn't have anything like the reference points the likes of myself have. I go back to 1963 for my first live match. SM in my top 3 of all time? Not even in the top 53 I very much doubt. But from a much younger supporters point of view if indeed he is, I can understand it much more.

One thing I will say about SM, I liked him when I saw him play a few times for Wigan between 2016-2020, thought he was capable of performing at a higher level, and he did just that. Probably the PL came just a few years to late for him.

So to sum up, one of ITFC's finest ever players? No chance. But as a leader and captain purely? I'll put him up there with the best of those. Probably about3/4th, and we've had a few in my over 60 years!

Also.... I'd say our biggest problem areas this season has been the midfielder next to Matusiwa and lack of leaders / bottle. Had Morsy stayed then none of these would be an issue.... so yes, it was an error to let him go! But I completely agree, he wanted to leave and fair play the club didn't stand in his way... but no doubt if both ITFC and Morsy had their time again, he would still be here....1000%

Somethings not right here. Think McKenna's keen but this is an opportunity missed. We have the money spare so even if his return didn't work out it would not matter. McKenna rotates the Team anyway.................baffling, its not that our Midfield is on fire and we do not have any Leaders on the pitch!

we are a bad refereeing decision or injury from Matusiwa being out and our midfield being Taylor and Cajuste or Nunez.
Nunez could play number 8 but he can be careless with the ball and ...alongside Taylor as cover?
Cajuste can not play 2 games a week and couldn't play more than 65 minutes last year,
Whether it is Morsy or not some cover has to be on the shopping list. I'd take Morsy

MickMillsTash I agree with you from the clubs point of view. But have to look at it from Sam's pov too. Probably has 1 or 2 seasons left at this level. He wont wat to spend those on the bench as backup.

ITFC 1994, we'll have to agree to disagree on that. It's what this site is about, opinions, hopefully largely friendly! No need to apologise for not being 60. I'm not either. I'm 70 :)
