Struber: Morsy Super Close to Joining Bristol City
Saturday, 27th Dec 2025 10:35

Bristol City head coach Gerhard Struber says the Robins are “super close” to signing former Blues skipper Sam Morsy.

News emerged earlier in the week that the 34-year-old free agent was in advanced talks at Ashton Gate.

Morsy left Kuwait SC after a short spell in September having departed the Blues in the summer.

“Yes, we are super close with Sam,” Struber said at his post-match press conference following yesterday’s 2-1 win at West Brom.

“I would say [that] Sam gives us a little bit more experience. He’s a player with a little bit of a different face and he can be, of course, on the pitch for us super important.

“But also, next to Knighty [Jason Knight], next to Rob Dickie, next to Zak Vyner, he can be also in the dressing room for us an important player.

“We had the chance to get him, and I would say [in] the next few days, maybe he has a Bristol City shirt on.”

There’s a new one for your headlines Phil ‘super close’. Hopefully you can use it in Jan when we are about to sign someone.

Ashton talks tough, so can he explain how we have let a star player be released for free and join a promotion rival in the same season. Most amateur thing we have done since the American takeover.
Looking at the amount of momey we have spent this summer compared to performances Ashton surely on thin ice

We are very fortunate that Matusiwa has stayed fit, as an injury to him could leave us really regretting letting Morsy leave for free when he had a year left on his contract.

Yes we do miss his captaincy and drive but I do believe that we have a much better midfield player in Matusiwa. The club was generous in allowing Morsy to go but I would say that was classy and certainly not stupid. Our club manages things with integrity. Morsy was great for us but the PL showed why his best days have gone.

The Premier league showed all of our players days were gone . Not one of the present squad are any where near Premier league quality . This is the poorest championship in memory yet we are struggling to beat the likes of Oxford, Charlton etc.

Morsy will struggle for fitness this season, it's hard enough with no pre season, but coming in halfway through.... he'll be good for them, but wouldn't be match fit enough to slot back into our squad imo.

There's a story behind all this that none of us know. Morsy goes for no money to Arabs, plays 2 games then leaves, and ends up back in the Championship. Will someone explain please?

@carberry behind the scenes politics, posting on X can lead to differing views within the hierarchy.

Best to let sleeping dogs lie I think. Wish him the best of luck for the rest of the season ( assuming it happens ), but not too much, and move on!
