Davis: Mehmeti is an Incredible Signing
Tuesday, 10th Feb 2026 09:59 by Kallum Brisset

Anis Mehmeti has all the qualities to help Town achieve their ambitions this season, according to Blues teammate Leif Davis.

January signing Mehmeti was an opportunistic recruit from Championship rivals Bristol City towards the end of last month, the forward joining for an initial £3 million with his contract set to expire at the Robins in the summer.

The Albania international has impressed since arriving at Portman Road, and was widely viewed as one of the Blues’ strongest performers in each of his two starts against Preston North End and Derby County.

Last Saturday’s 2-1 victory over the Rams saw Town record their first away win of the calendar year, with Mehmeti playing a key role in both goals at Pride Park.

Davis, whose headed winner secured the three points, is already delighted with how the new arrival has got to work with his teammates.

“Anis, an incredible signing for us,” he said. “He looks lively on the ball and he works hard for the team, you can see he’s settled in really quick already.

“He works really hard on and off the ball, which is a big part of us as a team. He’s going to settle in even quicker and hopefully he gets his first goal.

“One of his first sessions, he was in the right 10. He came across, I rolled it into his feet and I let him do the rest. I thought ‘wow, we’ve got a player on our hands here’.

“He’s incredible on the ball, you can see how sharp he is. It’s not just the on-the-ball stuff he’s good at, the best thing he’s good at is his off-the-ball stuff.

“How hard he works off the ball for the team, he doesn’t just go out there playing for himself, he knows what he’s got to do on the pitch for everyone.

“Everyone’s got the same goal at the end of the season and that’s where we want to be. With him, he knows that.”

Mehmeti’s decision to join Kieran McKenna’s side was no doubt aided by the reviews of Bristol City midfielder Sam Morsy, who captained the Blues to successive promotions during his immensely popular four-year spell in Suffolk.

Davis said: “He spoke to Sam when he was at Bristol. He knows the club like the back of his hand and he was saying it’s a no-brainer.

“To have Sam say that as well, how much he cares for the club and respects the club. That’s a player we obviously miss as players and as fans, but he’s got us a good player on our hands as well so we appreciate that.

“He can play wide right, he can play as a 10, he can play left. Having that in your game is such a big factor for you. Wherever you get put on the pitch, he wants to play, he’s hungry to play.

“At Bristol, he was playing left 10, but he knows he’s got a job to do in that right 10. He’ll get his goal very soon.”

Town’s other January signing was the loan addition of Dan Neil from Premier League high-flyers Sunderland, the midfielder joining a competitive group in the heart of midfield.

Neil had previously spent his entire senior career with the Black Cats, a run that is set to come to an end when his contract at the Stadium of Light expires this summer.

While praising his obvious qualities, boyhood Newcastle United supporter Davis joked about having a Wearsider enter the Blues’ dressing room.

“I told him straight away don’t talk to me!” he teased. “That’s stuff that goes on back there, we’re teammates now. We all have that bit of banter but he’s a great lad no matter where he’s played, he’s a teammate now. Hopefully he can be on the journey to get us back to where we want to be.

“We played against Dan in the first game of the season in the Championship last time. You could see his quality and what he had so we knew what he could do. Hopefully he gets more minutes on the pitch as well because we know what he can do on the ball.”

On his own altered role in the side at left-back, Davis added: “It’s because I’ve got two incredible wingers that can play in front of me.

“Everyone’s incredible in the team, but I’ve got two good players that can play out wide, go one-v-one and show their qualities like Jaden [Philogene] and Clarkey [Jack Clarke]. That’s why they’ve scored the goals that they’ve got from leaving them out wide and doing their thing in the one-v-one areas.

“I’ve still got to do the unselfish runs. I’ve got to do it because it can track the man off, it can pull them off so they can go inside. I’ve got to do that for my team.

“I don’t just do it for nothing, I do it for him getting the chances in the areas on the edge of the box, it’s an unselfish run I’ve got to make. I’ll just try and do everything I can for the team.”

This weekend will see Town take a brief pause from league action to face Wrexham in the fourth round of the FA Cup on Friday night.

It won’t be the last trip to north Wales this month, with a second visit to the Racecourse Ground to follow in the Championship just eight days later.

“I don’t think it’s ever been seen, five away games in a row,” Davis said on the February calendar. “The Portsmouth one got called off but we still travelled there.

“Things will fall into place for us, but it’s not always going to be easy. It’s going to be tough wherever we go and it’s going to be a different kind of game. Wrexham will be a different game to what we faced [against Derby].”

Mehmeti could prove to be a great signing.

When we were struggling in the Evans era, I used to like anyone get miffed how players would be cherry picked from us, but our double promotion allowed us to become that club that grabbed the best the Championship had to offer, whether that was Philogene, Delap, Greaves, Clarke, Szmodics. Of course when we got relegated ambitious players like Omari and Delap were pretty swiftly back to the Premiership, but being one of the 'bigger clubs' now in the Championship, we again have that power to pick off to the best players in the Championship.

We gave it a good go with Hayden Hackney, but that guy is a proud Smoggie, so you can't blame him for believing he could accomplish promotion with his hometown team. Picking up Mehmeti who was Bristol's best player was a smart signing, & we attempted to grab Millwall's best in Azeez.

Rudeboy stuff, but gotta be done.

I know people get obsessed with how much we've spent, and how much the manager gets paid, but without our prem promotion & parachute money, we wouldn't have any clout. Forget about the sums of money (we're obviously spinning one to win one) and enjoy the fact that we're able to assemble a squad that challenges for the Prem again, and pick off talents like Mehmeti from one of our rivals.

I had doubts when we went for him as like others on here I was a bit tunnelled visioned about a new centre forward (which we still need) but seems like an excellent signing so far. Him, Nunez and furlong the pick of this season additions.

These are exciting times.
We have all seen the depths of dispair that came before Game Changer.

Never forget them. They are part of who we are.

But, for the now, celebrate what we are being offered.

5 years ago this would have seemed like a dream come true. But without experiencing the lows how can you celebrate the highs ?

Pinch me I must be dreaming again. Are we really fighting for a third promotion in 4 years ?

Mehmeti looks a fantastic pickup at a bargain price. Also, shout out to Leif, who has very obviously taken on a leadership and 'representative' role this season. His positive, friendly, selfless, encouraging, happy personality comes through in everything he does and says. On top of being a superb player, of course. Leif is all round brilliant. Outstanding.

Best buy of the season!??!

Matusiwa wins that hands down as our signing of the season. No other player gets anywhere near.

Been really impressed with how quickly he has settled in and adapted to our style of play. Has brought some additional quality on to the pitch.

Don't know how you can say a player is the buy of the season when it's only February. It's early days but Mehmeti has the technical ability to play in the Premier league whether he has the physical attributes im not sure. Nunez has also been a excellent signing good technical ability and hardest working player in the squad.

After all the moans about not getting in a new centre forward (not that I'd be unhappy if we'd got one), we seem to have done some great business in acquiring Mehmeti and Neil. The former will hopefully develop even more now with a better set of players around him, and Neil is a proven talent at this level. It's beginning to look as if we will need to chase down Coventry as Boro are going really well (win again vs Sheff Utd.) So I suppose we want Boro to beat Coventry when they meet next match. Even if it's the playoffs, we still have a good chance, but we all know how unpredictable they can be, so I'd rather go up directly. Second place would do fine. Boro probably deserve to win the Championship this time round.

Looks a quality little player, just what we've been lacking in linking the midfield and attack (as good as Nunez has been).

£3m is a snip - I always prefer grabbing a bargain than chucking around stupid amounts of money (£17.5m) - and boy have we got a bargain here.

Linkboy13. Agree with most of what you say there, but cant agree that Nunez is the hardest worker in the squad. Matusawi works, much harder for sure. And from what weve seen already from Mehmeti, would put him above Nunez for his work rate.

What’s all this left 10 and right 10 in my day it was 8 on the right and 10 on the left.

Having said that I don’t care what you call it so long as he continues playing as he has in first two games

It amuses/amazes me how people on here (not on this post, but often) routinely diss our recruitment. Matusiwa, Kipre, Nunez, now Mehmeti, all significant upgrades on what we had before in their positions, Furlong ditto maybe. Egeli could well be a star of the future, Clarke and Philogene haven't done badly this season, have they? And it's only been Granit Xhaka, many pundits' pick as PL signing of the season, who has kept Neil out of the surprise Prem package of the year. What's not to like?

Slob....., in my days, love it.
In my day, 7, 8, 9, 10, 11, right across the front line, left wing, inside left, centre forward, inside right, right wing.
8 or 10 now a days dropped back to midfield, CAM, or CDM, with the 4 as CDM.
2 & 3, left back and right back still the same as ever (or wing backs now)
5 & 6, left central defence & right central defence (4, 5, and 6, in my day)

I thought Mehmeti, like much of the team, was poor against Preston. He did stand out against Derby, though. Matusiwa was my man of the match — he covered every blade of grass. I can’t help but feel the lack of rotation between the two games really helped, with Taylor coming in for Cajuste the only change. I’m not a fan of the system, but Derby matched it also playing 4-2-3-1 and it seemed to give us more room to operate in midfield, unlike the Preston low block. Derby's intent to win obviously helped as well. Keeping the pressure on the top two is all we can hope for - they will certainly be feeling it.

I thought we would lose Davis to a PL club at some point but he clearly loves our club and enjoys playing in a KMcK team. Team spirit and togetherness sprinkled with quality may yet get us to top two.

I was dubious about this signing. Another no 10 when what we really need is another no 9. KM seems to be fixated of signing players who either play as wingers or no 10’s. But from what I saw during the Derby game and watching the highlights, he has vision to pick out a team mate, a good range of passing and an eye for goal. We have a good squad, many pundits would say the best in the league, and good enough to get promoted back to the PL. However what we do miss sometimes is a bit of guile to get over the line in some matches, we are still a bit inconsistent at times. Poor against Sheff Utd but then put in a good shift at Derby, saw the game out and got the result. It’s 4/5 horse race for the top two. If Coventry or ourselves end up in the lottery that is the play offs, then I think we will be kicking ourselves, I’m sure Coventry would be as they were so far ahead of everyone else. Fingers crossed we do enough in the remaining matches to get a top two spot. If we don’t I think questions will be asked of KM. Hopefully Nunez and Philogene back fully fit for next match. The only problem for KM is who to play now and what position. Wes is keeping a £20mill teenager out of the starting eleven. McAteer according to KM is improving. What is a little disappointing is Cajuste, Hirst, and Egeli have gone off the boil a bit.

He's certainly got ability with the ball at his feet and doesn't mind taking a player on with a bit of trickery...on Saturday he beat players 2 or 3 times. Could be a very influential signing.

From the small amount of playing time we've seen from Mehmeti , the only thing I can add to that headline is, so do I! I also have a feeling we'll be saying similar about Dan Neil in his own way, before too long. It's some collection of midfield/no10 players we have now. Nothing else like it in the Championship. It's a selection headache I'm sure KM will actually enjoy! Now if we can just get at least one of the lads upfront firing, I think top 2 is nailed on, without it just makes it that bit harder, but definitely still doable!
