Edwards Staying for Further Year
Edwards Staying for Further Year
Friday, 28th Jan 2011 16:55

TWTD understands that midfielder Carlos Edwards’s stay at Town will stretch beyond the end of the season, the Trinidadian having triggered a clause in his contract which entitles him to an additional year on the two-year deal he signed when he joined the Blues from Sunderland for £1.35 million in September 2009.

Edwards was recently claimed to have been offered a new contract by Town, but it seems likely that the reports were referring to the additional year.

http://www.twtd.co.uk/news.php?storyid=17580>Speaking in December, former boss Roy Keane revealed that the club have options to extend a number of players’ contracts, defender Damien Delaney understood to be amongst them, along with keeper Brian Murphy: “The club has options to extend the deals of one or two boys, people like Murph the goalkeeper.”

Those whose initial terms run to June 2011 are Brian Murphy, Gareth McAuley, Damien Delaney, David Norris, Arran Lee-Barrett, Ian McLoughlin, Alan Quinn, Luke Hyam, Troy Brown, Tom Eastman, Colin Healy, Billy Clark, Reggie Lambe, Ronan Murray, Jack Ainsley, David Cawley, Jamie Griffiths and Conor Hourihane, plus Pablo Couñago and Kevin Lisbie, who are out on loan for the season at Crystal Palace and Millwall respectively.

In addition to that list of 20, first-year pro Seb Dunbar, a left-back, is contracted until this month, having previously done well enough to win an extension to a deal which was up in September.

On Monday, manager Paul Jewell revealed that he was due to talk to skipper David Norris and defender Gareth McAuley late this week regarding their futures and wants to keep them at Town.

The pair have turned down the new two-year deals which were offered before Christmas with Portsmouth chasing the midfielder.

Oh today just gets better!! Edwards has been crap, I'd have let him go, & used his salary to secure Norris & Macauley.

I like him ... I just wish he'd be more consistent and stopped disappearing, especially when he's playing at right back!

he's a high wage earner, no positional sense, has a habbit of showing players the inside at right back, hasn't scored vast amounts, his crossing isn't what it was, has no physical presence in defence. Could do a lot better for the wages he's on

clearly no one saw how well he played at Arsenal

cannot judge a guy on 1 game alone, n if you look at the performance yes he's good going forward in that game but he was a liability at the back

There is a lot made of these 21 players but in reality if we can take the extra year on Delaney we only have 2 senior players to sign up - Gareth McAuley and David Norris. I would also keep youngsters like Luke Hyam, Troy Brown, Tom Eastman, Reggie Lambe, Ronan Murray as they wont be on much although I wouldn't lose sleep over any of them going.

So....get Norris and McAuley signed up! Best 2 signings we could make this January!

Edwards is fine for another year. Certainly not one of RKs worst signings. Might shine with the new manager

Edwards blows hot and cold, sometimes he is awful and other days I think he looks like an experienced pro still with a fair bit of pace for his age. I am not adverse to giving him another year if that is what Jewell wants. After all, we did shell out about £1.3M for him and that would be money lost if he leaves for free. I guess his wages are high coming from the Premier League. If he is on £14K a week say, that is £700K a year. Still, one could argue that money would have been better spent on Austin's salary!!

Did ok against arsenal but probably at fault for 2 of the goals . not a RB and not worth his high wages. pity we couldnt have let him go in June as his contributions are next to nothing apart from a long throw and what 2 goals for us in 2 seasons !

Oh, I would say he is. £1.3M for a then 30-year-old (he'll be 33 in October) is an awful lot of money and at that age none of it will be recouped. If he stays for three years on say £14K a week, that's around £2M in salary so a total cost of over £3M. That is about 10,000 season tickets! Also, Keane signed the right-winger at a time we had Walters playing on the right (and Peters available) and that money could have been spent on other areas of the team. So, I'd say not the worst player Keane has signed, but definitely one of the worst signings.

Edwards was at fault for two of our goals at arsenal for goodness sake!

Garv, that's because he isn't a right back. He will play right wing when we get a right back

Rather have a new right winger aberdeentractor, he hardly set the world alight there either has he

have to disagree with most think he is a good player and definately worth another year, we can at least sell him if we wish having offered him an extension rather than let another go free. He is fast has a good brain and i think will fit well into a footballing Jewell type team rather than a hoof ball Keanesk team

Please pay attention. Edwards has triggered a clause in his contract so it's not the club extending. If no offers come in then he stays

Stop trying to blame everyone for everything.

Went to Emerates and thought the two goals mentioned above were most likely due to the patience, guile, pace and skill of the tens of millions of pounds worth of Arsenal players on the pitch. Seems in fact that they were both the fault of Edwards!

Some of these comments are a bit harsh! Edwards has been pretty good. He is no right-back, but still did okay. I think he is a decent option. If Jewell likes to play with wingers, then Edwards will suit that system. Not only that, allowing another £1M+ player to leave for nothing would be a disgrace. Clegg now needs to sort out these other deals / sign some players that Jewell wants.

Good news.

Edwards was man of the match at the Emirates by a mile! Some people haven't got a clue...

He's triggered a clause in his contract. Meaning this is a man who WANTS to play for Ipswich Town.

Have you not all been calling for players with some passion for the club?

He's triggered a clause in his contract. Meaning he's chasin' the dollar just like everyone else. If you had to chose between employing yourself for another year or being unemployed what would it be?
