EU contributions by country 17:11 - Mar 31 with 8430 viewsLord_Lucan

Although an avid (and still furious) inner there is much talk about how much Brexit is going to cost The UK. Although it doesn't affect my stance I would imagine that The EU would also be effected quite a bit financially by our withdrawal.

GB; Pretty sure you mentioned that aside from Germany and France we put more in than the rest put together. Must admit though I find that hard to believe.

The UK pays the lowest percentage of gross national income of any EU country, a mere 0.59% (2007 figures, the most recent I've seen).

As a net contributor, the EU will make it as unattractive for us to leave as possible, with the usual threats and half-truths. I suspect we'll now enter a 2-year period of bureaucracy with not much happening.

Whatever people might think of the EU the threats and half-truths will more likely be coming from us. For the EU there are no party politics to play or the need to defend political careers.

I suspect it will be nearer three years with quite a bit happening. Any advance on 3?

i think its misleading to quote it in percentage terms. you can apply the "father ted" principle ...

"if there are 100 million priests in the world, and only 10% were pedophiles, then thats still only 10 million...."

quote it in money terms and it becomes much more of an interesting stat.

However large it looks as a 'real' amount, it's still only a very small proportion of a even larger amount.

i dont disagree we contribute (many many) millions - and i think thats the bit that they are most scared of - paritcually germany and france, who will now be expected to prop up the likes of the greeks (whom are bankrupt) the italiams (whom are perenially in debt), the slovakian nations who only a few years ago were a war zone

and of course, the spanish whom just dont give a s**t

Either that other they'll all focus on this rather than any other activity. Our policy and public affairs people have been told not to expect to get anything done for a couple of years. We are refocusing on the devolved governments.

so i have a solution to this entire thing

according to
http://www.telegraph.co.uk/news/0/how-much-do-we-spend-on-the-eu-and-what-else-c

we pay 12.9 billion a year net into europe. (after contribs)

so what we say to them is "we'll pay that for the next 5 years, providing we still have access to the same trade routes" - we're out, but we'll still pay it.

it costs us nothing extra
theyve got 5 years to con some other nation out of it
we get the trade deal for at least 5 more years and that buys us time to get in bed with the indians/chineese/rusians/us / emerging nations

everyones happy. seems pretty simple to me.
