the Butt and Oyster on 14:36 - May 31 with 4430 views | stickymockwell | I went a few weeks ago. It was sooo disappointing. Fish was greasy and staff unhelpful. The walk was great though. For quality of food and value I give it one star. Pub looks great though. If you walk past the boat homes there is a circuit that's about 3 miles and very picturesque.

the Butt and Oyster on 14:44 - May 31 with 4406 views | C_HealyIsAPleasure | Food is alright - standard Deben Inns jobby so reasonably priced and does the trick. Yes to the dog walking also For a better Deben Inns pub IMO, go to the Newbourne Fox. Much nicer setting and a nice big field nearby for the dog

the Butt and Oyster on 14:57 - May 31 with 4373 views | Guthrum | As a young child, used to go for winter walks along the Orwell with my father, under the auspices of the Ipswich and District Natural History Society (both he and his father had been on the committee, was how my parents met). Fond memories of that bit of shoreline, from the bottom of Freston Hill, past the tower (before the marina existed), Cat House, the monument to a coach crash (probably gone now) and Pin Mill, to the lane which leads up to the bus stop between Shotley and Chelmondiston.

Agree - although I find the Maybush seems to be far more popular, for some reason!

I probably got a bit unfortunate. In true style I moaned very quietly under my breath. I had a baby strapped to me as well and after ordering 3 drinks the staff behind the bar watched me struggle out to the garden. I thought one could of at least held the door for for me seeing as they were just standing there looking bored. I have had good food there in the past but that fish had been cooked in oil that was either so old or too cold and it was minging. It was probably just an off day. [Post edited 31 May 2017 15:05]

Prob due to the views, which are nice in the summer, but the outside does attract far too many wasps!

Agree with all of this. You can walk around a Newbourne spring too which is nice.

Buses are thin on the ground from stowmarket to Chelmondiston, so I guess the in-laws drove.

Except when you have a dog, in which case they'll go lay in the tar-like mud, which isn't so nice!!

the Butt and Oyster on 15:46 - May 31 with 4233 views | Lord_Lucan | This has probably already been said but it is a Deben Inns so same same for food as Wilford Bridge, Fox, Coach and Horses, Westerfield Swan, Maybush etc etc etc. It is a nice setting though. There are better places to eat but not so nice location, mind you it isn't fine dining prices anyways is it. If it were me I would go the shorter distance and slightly less pretentious customers at The Maybush if you wanted Deben Inns - although I confess I haven't been to The Fox.

The Fox is by far the best of the Deben Inn chain.
