Update.

They completely ignored all the above & delivered it today anyway, the day I said I did *not* want it delivered - as I was out at the Headingley Test Match.

It was dumped in the middle of the drive, about 15 yards from the front door and 25 yards from nominated safe place (woodshed). Luckily my tenant took it in when he returned home briefly during the afternoon.

I tried to raise a complaint via Resolver - twice - both times I got an email back saying the email address wasn't recognised as belonging to any account - even though 2 hours earlier, Amazon had emailed that same address to say 3 more items had been dispatched, and this completed my order (it didn't complete it, there was a 5th item outstanding which they hadn't mentioned)!

You couldn't make it up, it's like being in a Kafka novel. Joint worst company I've ever had to deal with, ranking alongside BT for awfulness - and that's really saying something!

British Gas are at the top of my "never use again" list.

Moved into a new house several years ago which had an archaic card meter and British Gas as the supplier. Tried a few local shops but couldn't find anywhere that sold them. Called British Gas and they told me KG Stores a few roads away had them. I visited and they said they had never had the cards. Called British Gas again and they then gave me the name of a shop somewhere on Foxhall Road area. Visited them, same result.

I then called British Gas again and they told me that actually, the nearest shop that had them was in Harwich. I asked whether they could double check this given the duff information I had received previously as unsurprisingly I didn't fancy having to go all the way to Harwich, especially as I had to do it next day as electricity was needed for a builder coming to do some work. The person said they'd call the shop to check and put me on hold, and then came back on the line to say they did.

I got up at 5am the next day and drove to Harwich for the shop opening at 6:30 so I could get back in time for work. As you have probably guessed by now, they didn't have the cards, nor had ever stocked them.

Sympathies. BG have been so far off the scale in nearly killing me many times over (from CO poisoning in the late '80s), that they've been in a "never use again" category all of their own since then as far as I'm concerned.

Shame you weren't there or anyone with presence of mind to take a photo.

I must admit I've generally had good experiences with Amazon, and they aren't of course directly responsible for those trading alongside their name.

But I have had a couple of negative experiences recently and enough to dent my confidence in the setup if I'm honest.

I contacted them again via Twitter (easiest way, and they take more notice where their reputation is very publicly being exposed) to say I'd never shop with them again when I can source the product elsewhere, no matter what the price difference.

Had also phoned them - lass offered me a fiver off next purchase! max she's authorised to do. I asked if she'd accept being paid £5 for 4 hours' work (my time wasted now), and of course she said no!

If they were interested in having a good reputation, they wouldn't use Yodel but develop a decent delivery service themselves. But they won't, because all they're interested in is maximising the margins and profits for themselves.

I feel sorry for the workers - they do their best, but that whole inability to recognise UK addresses & postcodes thing on Thursday was, I'm sure, entirely down to totally inadequate, poor staff training - probably a newbie on her first day.

You've not had a great time with Amazon! They use Gateshead taxis to deliver to us, and sometimes it is just some random guy in his own car. The good lady orders a fair bit of arts and craft stuff for Seb from there, and stuff for the patchwork quilts she makes him.

I have no experience of their customer service. MrsNewcy was on their chat trying to sort out missing items and it took a fair while. Took enough time that I was soundly asleep by the time she finished.

They don't break any tax laws do they? And as a big employer their contribution to the economy is very valuabale.

Corporation Tax is such an outdated tax in a period where business is global and fluid.

You don't have to break any tax laws to fail to contribute to the economy, wouldn't you rather see the business given to local companies with more ethical operations?

I guess you have accepted my point about their bad reputation as an employer, again another company would benefit Britain by having higher standards, paying better so that employees can contribute more to the economy and improving training so that our human resources base is higher.

Or drones!

What happened to the drone fad?

I thought all my shopping was to be delivered by drones now.

Not really needed with Prime Now, you can get stuff delivered in 2 hours.

In cities, anyway. Which is where the PR drones would've operated, I doubt getting a DVD to Suffolk from their warehousing via drone would be particularly quick or feasible

As someone's just revived the thread, I'll add an update to say that yesterday afternoon I had an email from Amazon to say that there was a problem with delivering my order and to ring them. I checked Hermes tracking and there was an 8.15 am message from them to me saying they were "waiting for (me) to arrange delivery". As delivery arrangements had been made twice over in the previous couple of days, I was pretty puzzled and rang Amazon around 5.30pm. They said no problem existed & my package would be delivered sometime before 9pm.

I tried to give them directions for the driver, but the guy in the Philippines had apparently never heard of satnav, and I had to spell it about 5 times for him. Whole other saga re further simple directions I tried to give, but won't bore people further with it.

Package delivered around 7pm to my nominated safe place - just caught the driver coming out of driveway as I was returning along the road with the mutt after his walk - woman in her own van who'd also delivered to me about 3 years ago, and remembered location. She had received no directions whatsoever from Amazon. We got chatting & she said they (Hermes) had had loads of trouble with Amazon messing them about, she reckons Amazon have simply got too big.

5 hours of my life which I won't get back, spent sorting out their shambolic "service". Huge relief to think I won't ever be using them again!

I think you must just be really unlucky.

Their service is usually amazing.

Not great news for smaller retailers perhaps, but that's another argument.

I stoped using Amazon several years back.
I had a problem which made me think my account ahd been tampered with so contacted them & they point blank refused to help. So I spoke to my CC company and cancelled all transactions & have never used thme since.

Also not great news for our economy as they do not pay their way taxwise, and by all accounts they are a terrible employer.

They are not a terrible employer. I worked for them for five years and loved it. It is a challenging job and they demand hard work. Some people are not up to the hard work and blame that on their employer rather than taking personal responsibility.

So, boiling it down, you are saying that they drained the lifeblood out of you for five years until you couldn't take it anymore but you make yourself feel better about the experience by suggesting that those with the common sense to get out before they ended up in the same state couldn't hack it?

Crikey, that is some imagination you have!

I was lucky in that I was given a great opportunity elsewhere. I was sad to leave and wouldn't hesitate working for them again. I actively encourage people to try Amazon and have recently been caoching someone on how to pass Amazon interviews. It is a great opportunity for anyone who has the right qualities and behaviours.

Our biggest selling product we import by the container load and we currently have 16 companies selling it on Amazon. The numbers they get through are phenomenal, one customer alone sold 5000 units @ £10 each last year between October - Christmas. I thought I fancy a bit of retail price action so I formed another company to sell through Amazon but they refused to accept me selling that product (it's a specialised product that requires special permission from Amazon). I advised them that it's my product and I am an expert in that field but apparently I don't meet their criteria for selling it.

I've started selling our other stuff on there and they take a chunky commission. Some products after we've sent it out we make almost nothing. That said, it is a remarkable company.

I still prefer ebay, and they do compete in the same space with Amazons 'marketplace'. Ebay are less about auctions than a direct route to China now, with the cheap postage.
Amazon marketplace is not my favourite. Im dealing with a US delivery of mtb shoes from amazon.com where thr customs form was never sent to me. So the product has been 'returned to sender'. God knows how long its going to take me to sort out. (Used US store because won a US store gift card).

EBay won't even accept our main item - but I think I'll put the other stuff on there and see how it goes.

I look at Amazon as a cheap way to buy new goods and EBay as a place for second hand bargains.

Just been searching for an alternative place to buy books for Kindle, came across this:

Edit: Unable to find the book I wanted for Kindle from alternative source, but got an audio CD of it for a tenner from Blackwells. Might have to continue with Amazon purely for Kindle - they have you by the short n curlies if you want to continue with that device - but at least there won't be any delivery issues (? famous last words ..?!)

The first time I assumed it was a one off piece of duff information so had no reason to not believe what I was told.

On the second occasion, the British Gas person I was speaking to told me that they had phoned them. It never occured to me that they might be lying and that I should phone them myself.
