I just put my hand into a bag of skittles and pulled out 4 sweets ...all green. What are the chances of that?!?

I bet Bloots will downarrow this.

Presuming that there are 5 different colours of skittles in your bag, and there are equal amounts of them, then...
Red, Green, Purple, Orange and Yellow are the flavours present in your bag, with the chance of pulling any of those colours at 1/5 or 0.2 chance, then,
0.2 x 0.2 x 0.2 x 0.2 or 0.2^4 = 0.0016

So you had a 0.16% chance or 1 in 625 chance of picking 4 greens in a row.

Incredible.

Actual it is more of a combination problem, than probability.

Dolly said he picked 4 skittles of the same colour in one go.
We do need to know the number of skittles and the number of each colour.

So say there was 10 skittles of each colour.
There are 230300 ways of picking 4 skittles.

This where my logic may break down.

There are about 210 ways of picking 4 green skittles

So the chances of getting 4 green skittles in one grab are 210/230300

Which is about 0.0009.

I think beforehand we just sort of ignored that dolly picked them all at once, and just presumed he picked them consecutively.

Although if we are looking for the answer to the one grab approach then I guess you’re the winner.

For 5 colours aren't there only 5x4x3x2x1 combinations (120) but that would be chosing 5 skittles. Rommers could probably help if it was greyhounds!

3 men went to a hotel. The man behind the desk said the room is £30, so
each man put up £10 each and went to the room. A little while later he
realized the room was only £25, so he sent the bellhop back to the 3 guys
room with £5. On the way to the room the bellhop couldn't figure how to
split the £5 between the 3 guys so he just gave each one of them £1 and he
kept the other £2. That left the 3 guys paying £9 each for the room.
3x9=27 + the 2 that the bellhop kept = £29. Where's the other pound?

100% chance, as all skittles are green under their colourful shell which rubs off fairly easy if youve got sweaty hands. Doesn't really matter, skittles are shyte- get a proper sweet in you lke a wherthers original or blue smarties

Yes, it stumps me as well. I never did very well in maths at school but I have evolved a bit since.

RKD was a maths genius when he was a youngster, he used to go to organised maths weekends when he was at primary school. They used to stay for the whole weekend in a maths room in Shotley, it all sounds a bit suspect now.

There is no missing pound, it's based on incorrect maths.

There is no missing quid. The men have paid £27 for a room that costs £25, not for a room that costs £30. The bellhop's £2 should be subtracted and not added and you then get your £25. It's one of those problems that is designed to make you scratch your head but actually there's nothing to it, they've created a sum that doesn't actually relate to what is happening in the scenario in order to give the appearance of there being a missing quid.

What if the green sweets were added to the bag last, and so were all at the top?
