Yeah, except it's grown in a lab. Brilliant stuff - vegan's ought to be jumping on this.

For me it depends on how it has been developed and come to market. If it's still linked to or based on rearing animals to harvest their cells and these animals are in poor conditions, being harmed in any way, or ultimately being slaughtered then it's a clear no go for me.

I know that eating a pig, cow or chicken that has been made by parent pigs, cows and chickens will always be safe to eat if they have been fed and reared well.

I don't have the same confidence about meat grown in a lab by scientists.

You can't even be sure of that.

There are ne'er-do-wells who will lie, cheat and swindle when it comes to the provenance of the food we eat. See the 2013 UK horsemeat scandal for one well known example of such chicanery.

No. You would have to question just how much nutrition would be present in these food like products.

Also if Branson and Gates are involved you can definitely count me out.

So, here's a moral puzzle to consider.

Would you consider eating slaughter free dog meat? Or slaughter free human flesh?

Safe in what way?

Safe in the normal sense of the word safe in the expression developped over millennia, "safe to eat".

I'm lucky enough to know the farmers who produce all the meat I eat. But I get your point.

Whilst I am quite happy to eat slaughtered meat, if the artificial stuff were indistinguishable from the real thing, and helps reduce the impact of mass farming, then why not?

If it takes off big time and makes the stuff more affordable, then all the better. I can see a future where eating genuine meat is a niche practiced by only a few very rich people.

It would also reduce the volume of cow farts which are damaging the planet. ;-)

Why would this be less safe? It would contain less growth hormone and anti-biotics than farmed meat.
