Happy draft day 13:27 - Apr 25 with 4338 viewsJoey_Joe_Joe_Junior

A great Thursday night party.

Do the Cardinals take Murray?! Do the Giants finally take a QB? Do the Raiders do something mental with all their picks? Do the Skins mortgage their future for Haskins?

As a fairweather supporter who never follows the draft, how do you fancy Steelers chances here? Given we've just lost 2 massive players.

This draft has great WR depth without having super star talent so you can definitely pick up someone decent at WR tomorrow night with a 2nd or 3rd round pick. Same with RB really, don't forget the likes of Kamara in recent years didn't even go first round.

There is elite defense on the board tonight. Considering they are picking at 20 I think the Steelers will take an inside linebacker, a position of need. They could end up with someone like Devin Bush out of Michigan who will be a difference maker and day 1 starter.

For some reason i think that Murray will end up at the Raiders - whether they trade up or he drops I haven't decided as yet!

For my Vikes, hoping one of the big O Line prospects drops to 18, Dillard and Williams look unlikely to. Taylor might, but hoping that Bradbury does......but after his combine not so confident he will.

Fear is all the top 15-20 ranked O Line go early, and we are in a position where we either need to reach or go for the D Line as so much talent and then miss the run on interior O Linemen like we did last year and be scrambling around in the 2nd. If it gets to that stage I'd rather trade back than pick up another D Lineman.

Football over here should follow suit.

Fact:- I've watched more of the draft (by virtue of being in a bar in Minneapolis on business once) than actual American Football!

This is why I think the Bills will happily trade down from number 9, they are after weapons for Allen giving them extra picks in round 2 could allow them to get those. Also look out for Indy going after WR or TE another team looking for downfield weapons for there QB.

Well if you like the sport it's a very exciting night as it goes.

If you don't then I expect most people probably don't bother clicking on threads about it and posting unless they have absolutely nothing better to do with their day.

Day 2 guy isn't he? Personally I think unless we can get one of the big tackles at top of draft (unlikely) we'd be better focussing on the interior.

Reiff isn't the best tackle but he was made to look so bad last year because the Guard alongside him only signed because he was Kirk Cousins' best mate!

I'll try and explain at a basic level.

Every April the draft in the NFL occurs. It is based on each teams performance the previous year. E.g the Superbowl winner would have the last pick in each round, the worst place team would have the first pick. There is a huge collegiate eligible pool of talent coming out of colleges across the country every year available for selection. The first round (at least the top 10) should be stars at their position in the NFL. You can also trade with other teams for their picks. Eg if you were picking 15 this year but really wanted a QB that was going to go in the top 3 you could trade your next two years first round picks with that team (just as an example). Imagine a very lively transfer deadline day with lots of variable where money is not the issue and it all happens within a few hours.

First round players should be elite or year 1 starters at a minimum
(the first round is tonight)
Second/third round players should at least be starters (that is tomorrow)

Then over the weekend there is round 4-7.

Here is the picking order this year. The fun part is that each team has 3 minutes to select and lots of trading between teams etc happens. The big advantage of getting a star in the draft is there are on a rookie deal for 4 years which is cheap, you don't have to offer them the big bucks until 3-4 years down the line. Each team has a salary cap so this is important.

It is also interesting that a lot of the top players will fall in the draft because of character concerns nagging injuries etc.

Round 1
1. Arizona Cardinals (10)
2. San Francisco 49ers (6)
3. New York Jets (6)
4. Oakland Raiders (8)
5. Tampa Bay Buccaneers (7)
6. New York Giants (12)
7. Jacksonville Jaguars (7)
8. Detroit Lions (9)
9. Buffalo Bills (10)
10. Denver Broncos (8)
11. Cincinnati Bengals (11)
12. Green Bay Packers (10)
13. Miami Dolphins (7)
14. Atlanta Falcons (9)
15. Washington Redskins (9)
16. Carolina Panthers (7)
17. New York Giants (from Cleveland Browns (8))
18. Minnesota Vikings (8)
19. Tennessee Titans (6)
20. Pittsburgh Steelers (10)
21. Seattle Seahawks (5)
22. Baltimore Ravens (8)
23. Houston Texans (7)
24. Oakland Raiders (from Chicago Bears (5))
25. Philadelphia Eagles (7)
26. Indianapolis Colts (9)
27. Oakland Raiders (from Dallas Cowboys (6))
28. Los Angeles Chargers (7)
29. Seattle Seahawks (from Kansas City Chiefs (7))
30. Green Bay Packers (from New Orleans Saints (6))
31. Los Angeles Rams (7)
32. New England Patriots (12)

as much as I like watching the NFL, I find the hoopla around the Draft incredibly boring. For days now ESPN have had experts on telling us who's going to get picked when, and by who, and in which round. Hardly any of these college stars will be be seen playing anytime soon. Unlike footy where a 16-year-old Rooney or Owen can burst on the scene and become a star.

If only we had a draft system. we would be picking first. Would give us something to look forward to. I think Marcus would trade our pick for loads of round four picks.

Big draft for the raiders. LiAds of picjs but loads of gaps to fill.

How about that you were right, and we traded 3 pick slots to select him in number 10. They must truly believe he's special.

Don't the players get any say in this? What if they don't want to play for the Packers, for instance, because they play in yellow and green? How about pay? Can't the players negotiate their own pay?

Great shouts all round reading through this, fair play

What do you make of Haskins? Obviously a need for you guys and great news that you didn’t have to trade up to get him - do you rate him though? Personally I can’t say I’m convinced having watched Ohio St quite a bit, which probably means he’ll do alright!

They don’t get any say in who picks them but they can refuse to play. This has actually happened a few times - notably Elway and Kelly in the 80’s (Elway was traded whilst Kelly did eventually play for the Bills about a year later, spent his career there and became a legend), and Eli Manning in 2004 who the Chargers still drafted and then got a ransom from the Giants

Most of the players visit the teams and get a feel for the place and the teams a feel for the player. Teams also do due diligence on players and some really talented players will fall down the draft as the player has outside issues that make teams nervous about drafting them.
