Must have been sudden, because hadn't heard anything about it and he was still on a lot of coverage (admittedly haven't seen any of the NZ series to know if that was the case)

Crikey. The verdict won't ever be the same again.

That 8-43 at Headingley will never be forgotten either. RIP.

Really couldn't stick him as I was growing up, continually moaning and I couldn't work out how he kept getting a gig as a commentator. However as I've grown older and with it inherently grumpier I thought he became a superb pundit on the verdict, often mocking his own cantankerous ways and becoming someone really worth listening too.
Very sad news, RIP

They did say he was ill. He was a genuine fast bowler, broke an Aussies jaw in the centenary test in Melbourne with a bouncer. Was one of the worst batsman ever and once forgot his bat when going out to bat for England.

No
That is fckin sh000t...excuse the language.

My youth was spent watching him play cricket.

Assumption is to make an ass out of you and me. Those who assume they know you, when they don't are just guessing. Those who assume and insist they know are daft and in denial. Those who assume, insist, and deny the truth are plain stupid. Those who assume, insist, deny the truth and tell YOU they know you (when they don't) have an IQ in the range of 35-49.

He also once held, maybe still does, the record of most not outs for England in tests.

Yeah, loved Bob on the Verdict.

I've not watched it during the NZ series however caught some of it yesterday for bit of a series debrief & they had Hussain on who I think is excellent. Grown into the best pundit/commentator over the last few years IMO.

Actually spent time with Bob on a few occasions, randomly watched some Wagner at the ROH with him (plus a pleasant pint in the Nags Head after) , which he was very much into. Genuinely pleasant and engaging, helpful about my fledgling leg-spin, although a bit dismissive of the art (this was pre-Shane Warne!)
Very sad news, RIP.

Oh no, what a shame. An all time England great, and a reassuringly cantankerous old bugg€r in the pundits chair.

Will forever be in our folkelore for that spell of bowling.

Just turned on SSN and seen it. Utter shock. Really didn't like his negativity as a pundit but he still had much to say worth listening to. A superb cricketer and will be very sadly missed.

I am sure he was on just the other day so must have been very sudden and unexpected.

Internet saying "following a short illness". Family requesting donations to Prostate Cancer charity in lieu of flowers. Not sure if that suggests the cause.

Yes, he was a bob Dylan fan. Surprised his parents allowed him to do that but maybe they thought he liked the rabbit in "Magic Roundabout".
