Another good Watson piece on 09:27 - Jan 6 by MrTown | He's bought very well yes, we were on an unbeaten run for 12 games, was he a bad manager then? Or is now we have a sticky spell that the toys go out the pram at the first time. |
Yes. He was a bad manager riding his luck playing lower-half teams with a squad of players capable of playing top-half this division/bottom half championship because it was early season and sides were still gelling together whilst he was fiddling and rotating, despite having had nearly a year in post already to set a pattern of play and formation in place. What we're seeing now is teams that have a togetherness and cohesion that we don't beating us because he's wasted dozens of games endlessly rotating the squad and changing formations rather than settling on a plan A, B and C. Right now, it's looking not so much that we're in a sticky spell it's that the start of the season was the run of fluke results. [Post edited 6 Jan 2020 9:38]

I'm happy to support him, I just don't think he's up to the job and we'd be better off without him.

The table doesn't lie, never has done and never will do. Nobody flukes being 5th in the league with half the season gone.

Another good Watson piece on 23:17 - Jan 5 by Herbivore | If you thought we looked good against Wycombe you must have pretty low standards. We were bang average against an out of form side coming off three losses and a 4-1 humping at home three days prior. We were shaky at the back and carved out a few half chances, it wasn't some huge turning point. [Post edited 6 Jan 2020 8:27]

It's the first game in a long while where we have created the bulk off the chances. I'm more a 433 man as think it suits what we have but 352 far preferable to 442, and sticking with 352 far preferable to changing every week

Another good Watson piece on 08:38 - Jan 6 by Swansea_Blue | Family on my dad’s side are all Villa fans and they all reckon Lambert ruined them. They could be wrong of course, maybe... |
In fairness to him, he was the one left holding the baby when Lerner decided to basically stop funding them, was a poisoned chalice by that point and he did well enough stabilising them afterwards.

No, but they DO throw away commanding positions at the top of the table with games in hand.

Another good Watson piece on 09:52 - Jan 6 with 543 views | itfcjoe | The other piece that Watson mentioned recently https://www.theguardian.com/football/2019/feb/09/paul-lambert-ipswich-town-norwi One of them, the then Bayer Leverkusen manager, Roger Schmidt, asked him why he had frequently changed system as Villa slid down the table. “I was just trying to get a result,” Lambert told his friend. “You’ll confuse the players,” Schmidt told him. “I’d been confusing myself with the systems. Back three, four, five, two in the middle, three, couldn’t get the result,” Lambert says. “He was right. I decided I wasn’t going to waver from that advice.” This needs to be left on his desk this morning

Except the money I put in through my season ticket and the odd cup game, giving my support at the ground. Don't talk such crap.

I think 3-5-2 is our worst formation personally as we don't have the defenders to play a back three at all and we always look shaky at the back in that system. Around half the times we've started with a back three we've had to change it mid game because it's not been working. I agree with you that 4-3-3 is probably our best bet but I'd take sticking with a back 4 consistently as a starting point.

im surprised 4-2-3-1 hasn't been given more of a go. Judge suits the 10 position, only question mark is who plays with Downes, Skuse is too limited going forward to play with Downes, so it has to be Dozzell or Huws maybe Nolan.

I think 3 in the middle of the park is the most important facet of the formation
