For all us meat eaters. 18:41 - Jan 31 with 5555 views | Pecker | My Wife is now vegan. She brought a magazine today and in there was an article on global warming. It claims that the production of meat omits more greenhouse gases than every car, plane and boat in the world. That can't be right, can it?

It’s the next palm oil scandal waiting to happen the amount of land that is being taken over to plant soy (that’s without mentioning the GMO aspect and what that could bring further down the line) |
Soy has considerably less impact on the environment than meat. That’s a fact. It’s a bit like moaning about someone farting in a lift whilst someone else is taking a sh1t on your shoes.

It’s assuming someone else’s cultural norm is the cause of an issue because it’s different. It’s not outright racist, in fact it’s something many people who aren’t racist in any way may assume without questioning. It’s more institutional racial bias.

For all us meat eaters. on 19:21 - Jan 31 by Nthsuffolkblue | You are right, it is. However, how much of that land would genuinely return to forest? How much would simply be grassland for other reasons/purposes? How much is marshy land and how much mountain/hill-side? How much would be managed with machinery if it wasn't grazed? As I say, many variables that I suspect haven't been thoroughly considered. Maybe they have in some studies. I haven't looked at any in great detail. |
Large chunks of the Amazon that have been deforested for soy plantations and grazing could quite easily be given back over to forest.

I recommend Googling about how much water goes into a beef burger. That may answer a few questions and shock you. I would link to something but it’s Friday and I’m being lazy.

Never be afraid to ask for help. You will be surprised how many organisations there are to help. Of course, you need to help yourself first and admit you have a problem, which you have and for that I congratulate you.

The water that they claim goes in to beef or other animals isn’t actually right. I know this as when you google amount of water to produce beef it also says it takes 576 gallons of water to produce a pound of pork. There is 4.5L of water per gallon, which means to produce 1 pound of pork it will take just shy of 2600L of water. 1 pound is 0.45kg. This means 260000L per 100kg pig. I am a pig farmer, we have about 950 pigs and use 350000L of water total in 20 weeks. This works out about 370L per pig, which based on 100kg pig is 3.7L/kg. Remember 1kg is just over 2 pounds. So that means it would be about 1.85L/pound of pork. Meat production has its issues with the environment i get that but a lot of people who are claiming getting rid will save the world need their heads shacking

I also recommend googling how bad non dairy milks such as almond milk are for the environment and also how Soy production is the 2nd worst agricultural crop behind beef!

Humans over population is the major factor over our food choices. Eventually, if we continue at the rate we are, then resources will be limited regardless. How the heck has the world population doubled in 50 years? That's insane.

Dean Swift's A Modest Proposal For preventing the Children of Poor People From being a Burthen to Their Parents or Country, and For making them Beneficial to the Public sorted this population problem out in 1729. His solution is as valid today as it was in the eighteenth century.

I see that the unpleasant slaughtering of male chicks has been in the news a bit recently. France is banning a certain method, and rightly so. That aside, cos I'm not looking for another debate on that, I am led to believe they are not grown to adulthood because the egg laying type don't grow to an appropriate size for the table. I can't see it. We breed and eat far smaller breeds of poultry so why the waste of life so young? Also, I know of a place near Diss that only sells Cockerels (for the plate) and they are huge. So where have they got only males from and how come?

As someone who claims to work in food and be an expert, I’m starting to wonder if you are suffering from the Dunning Kruger Effect. I mean, you just called beef a “crop”. https://www.theguardian.com/environment/green-living-blog/2010/feb/15/ask-leo-to I could drink almond milk for days and still have a lower carbon footprint than a meat and dairy eater. Although I choose oat milk as I am environmentally conscious rather than cherry picking nonsense to support an agenda I’ve pre-determined in my own mind.

Veganism isn’t the perfect solution, but it’s a huge step in the right direction. As for the water point you make, I’m sure pigs need less water than cows. But again, soy needs even less :)

I think the mass production of eggs is grim. My mate’s got a few rescue hens he saved from slaughter after they’d stopped being profitable for eggs and the difference in their physical condition now vs when he first got them is huge.

We kept chickens in America. They’re great fun. Although the main benefit of the eggs would be wasted on vegans of course. But a vegan purely on ethical grounds who wanted to keep chickens would be responsible for their welfare, so maybe would be willing to eat the eggs? Maybe?
