What's your earliest Ipswich Town memory? (n/t) on 10:03 - Mar 8 by patrickswell

March 26 1983 - I’ve travelled up to Paddington from Truro with my Mum to visit relatives in Hertfordshire, my 7th birthday is imminent. We’re met at the station by my uncle Dennis and cousin Tracey. We’re not staying with them but they’re dropping us to another set of relatives. Tracey’s several years older than me and we chat away on the journey. At one point, she asks me whether Ilike football and when I say yes she asks who my favourite team is. I realise that I don’t have one, but as today is a Saturday and I know that the football results won’t have been confirmed yet, I will pick one today.

We arrive at Auntie Mary’s and after a respectful time for hellos and chat, I ask if I can watch the telly. I put on World of Sport because I know that it’s nearly time for the wrestling, but ahead of that, Dickie Davies is reading the half time scores. I can’t see Liverpool or Manchester United on the board, which is fine because everyone already supports them and I think that I want to choose a team that’s “mine”. They were playing each other in the League Cup final in one of its last years as a Saturday fixture. I look down the list of half-time scores in the first division and something about the word Ipswich catches my eye. I like the sound and look of it, and I have vague recognition that they had been good in the recent past. They’re drawing 0-0 at Manchester City according to the half-times and I decide that if they win the match, I will support them.
After the wrestling, I’m back for the full-time scores. And there it is, caught for posterity and now fixed and immovable within my life:

Manchester City 0 Ipswich Town 1

A few months ago, I was astonished to find this on the Internet: https://www.citytilidie.com/latest/ipswich-home-198283/

I know this was a first division, not a third division, match but a couple of interesting quotes from that 'citytillidie' report:

'Seventeenth in the table and 10 League games without a win (three drawn matches in that disastrous run) the Blues were told beforehand by manager John Benson “This is our Cup Final”. it was also the day the crowd bade goodbye to long-serving goalkeeper Joe Corrigan on the eve of his departure for Seattle Sounders in America after 17 years at Maine Road.'

'A misty-eyed Corrigan, who took a farewell bow in the middle of the pitch before the kick-off, contributed “Don’t be too hard on the lads. They are trying their best and they’ll come through this, wait and see.”'

Ipswich v Everton, 1979/80ish. Dont’t remember the score, just the crazy bantz between the fans in the North Stand, because that’s where the away fans were placed back then. There was a piece of chicken wire between us.

People used to go to the toilet in the stand itself back then.

Alan Hunter’s testimonial (81?) and the drunk Celtic fans terrifying us just outside my school, St Matthew’s (although looking back I think it was actually quite good natured).

I had been to a few games the season before, but clearest memory when I think about this is the game where Marlon Harewood (who we had on loan) hit the post from about 4 years out? 1997 I think it was?

So around 2001 when it finally hit the woodwork. Not sure why Stewart didn’t tap in the rebound.

I think it was the Championship season and a match against Villa. We got a free kick near the halfway line and while the players and referee were distracted Ray Crawford took the kick - passed it forward to himself and then ran on with the ball until the ref noticed and blew his whistle. Everyone, including the ref. thought it very funny. Today he would probably get booked for ungentlemanly conduct!

My first game was 1971 but my first real memory is beating Real Madrid 1-0 a couple of years later with a late strike by Mick Mills. We went on to defy the odds by drawing 0-0 at the Bernabeu and knock them out in the process.

To quote a well known website ....those were the days

January 1970, FA Cup 3rd round v Man Utd. They were the biggest draw in the country at the time and 29,552 squeezed in to Portman Road in the days before the Cobbold Stand, although I think official capacity then was 31,500. We lost 1-0 with a late Mick McNeil o.g.

Entering the West stand for my first game (vs Swindon late in the 1964/5 season) and seeing that wonderful green pitch and being so excited for my first live game. It was 0-0 but I was hooked.

I was going to say similar, it was later about 76/77 and I know it wasn't my first game but the first midweek fixture I had been to and seeing the bright green grass under lights for the first time.

I don't even know what the game was, but the image has stuck with me.

No idea when I began here, was a very long time ago. Previously known as Spirit_of_81. Love cheese, hate the colour of it, this is why it requires some blue in it.

Just further to this, I know that the game was recorded for television, because a number of years ago on YouTube, someone uploaded Anglia’s Match of the Week broadcast from that day which was Norwich vs West Ham. At the start of the programme, Gerry Harrison said they would be showing highlights of Man City-Ipswich later in the programme, but the video just had the Norwich-West Ham match.
Then when ITV4 started showing The Big Match Revisited from the 1982-83 season, I watched the 26/3/83 broadcast but they only showed Fulham-Grimsby, Norwich-West Ham and Nottingham Forest - Southampton!

A school trip in 1976 to PR, stadium tour and visit the gift shop.

Couple of years after, we used to head there for half time as they used to let us in then for free.

We often used to go in at half time when we kids, as you say, it was free.

I would go to a number of reserve games to in those days too and those were really good.

You'd see a few first teamers who were making their way back from an absence so as a kid you were happy you'd seen your favourite players for about a quid or something.

My first memory must have been against Spurs early 70's. Don't remember the match or score but the memory is Ralph Coates bombing down the wing, the guy looked bald but hair flying behind him, no idea why it made such an impression on me but one of those weird things that just sticks. Be interested now to know the date but imagine around 1973.

I reckon the game you are referring to was a 0-0 draw in October 1973. Coates hadn't been as Spurs long & I remember his flying comb-over. Spurs had been struggling & were hideously negative while I think we had knocked Real Madrid out of the UEFA Cup in the week so the game was a bit of a damp squib.

Mine would be seeing a Town side at Sudbury Town in a pre-season fixture. I can't be sure, but I have a feeling it was after winning either the FA or UEFA cup. I remember it being a star-studded lineup and I gleefully got Paul Copper's autograph. I would have been either 7 or 10. Didn't see Town again until John Lyall's first game in charge.

I am looking at The Men Who Made The Town and there was a friendly at Sudbury (won5-0) on 11th May 1978 five days after the F.A. Cup Final.
There was a 5-0 win at Bury St Edmunds the next day.

That would be it. Thanks PJH. I've often wondered when that was. Seems bizarre that a friendly would have taken place so soon after a cup final.

watching cup final aged 6 not really knowing what the game actually was or its significance.

I was a Paul Mariner fan initially (couldnt lose with is card when throwing nearest the wall) and it went from there and I became fascinated by them as a kid and mariner my first sporting hero.

That's why I'm a Leeds born and bred lad suffering now some 43 years later after choosing Ipswich. But it wasn't based on being a glory hunter.

Losing 2-0 at home to 9 man Crystal Palace. At least things have improved since. Oh, wait....

Sometimes I think I’ve cursed this club. We seemed to turn sh1t the exact year I started properly following us

My hobbies include being quiet during trips, clapping with songs, and diabetes.

I would imagine that that game and the one at BSE were hastily arranged rather than pre decided as they were opportunities to take the new F.A. Cup holders out into wider Suffolk.

They might have been pre planned, I don't know.

Mick Lambert had a testimonial match at PR on the Monday after the final and the last league game of the season at home to Wolves was played on the Tuesday so including the final there were five games played by ITFC teams in a week.
