I remember the report about the import company that offered the govt loads of ventilators, but their call was never returned and the machines went elsewhere.

Also the report about one of the small uk producers not being contacted (that one was on the telly).

You're getting a neadlessly rough ride here - no doubt big mistakes were made.

I've been posting this stuff live as it was unfolding and was told to shut up and called several names because I was political point scoring apparently.

My "narrative" has remained the same throughout, and I've even said some things the government have done have been better (like finally going into lockdown and supporting employees even if the latter is still full of holes).

There's a lot of stuff going on in the UK where the writing was on the wall for weeks and we've done too little, too late, with countless fumbles and lies along the way.

The fact we may likely hit Italy and Spain levels of death tolls when other countries have mitigated damage says a lot. I'd be surprised if there is any freak reason for that. What needs to happen after this is an independent investigation and those responsible are held accountable.

It is totally unacceptable if we hit Italian death levels, and it will happen.

People can make excuses but we had weeks more information than the Italians did when it hit them, weeks to prepare more and were too slow.

Italy getting caught how it did is a tragedy, but they clearly didn't know what they were dealing with at the start and made mistakes - that we didn't learn from them is so wrong.

I can understand not wanting to crash the economy, but we've ended up with the worst of both worlds - lots of deaths and crashing the economy

You've replied enough times though.

I'll dig them out later as I have to get back to work post lunch break. I'm sure you can find them with some Googling though. I posted one link above of a manufacturer who offered 500 then and there but was not responded to.

I imagine with the budget going to Dyson and co some of that money could have went towards upping manufacturing to smaller companies who already have approved and used ventilator designs. Instead we're sat around weeks later waiting for the green light for the big boys to go ahead: https://www.theneweuropean.co.uk/top-stories/ventilators-from-dyson-yet-to-recei

With the money the government have shelled out already I doubt they would skimp on some ventilators if they were in need of them. I would think they would buy some for the PR alone.

Why would weeks more information have helped? Since Feb, procurement has been a nightmare, as Lord Lucan has already alluded to.

Firstly, procurement is even more of a nightmare if you aren't trying to do it - we were still effectively on a herd immunity strategy when plenty of other countries were gearing up to follow WHO advice of test, test test.

Secondly, with regards to the timing of the lockdown - going ahead with Cheltenham, going ahead with letting Madrid fans come to Liverpool were utter madness. Plus the mixed messaging of Boris saying how we will fight this head on, been shaking hands etc.

Some stuff has been done well, the capacity of ITU especially and the Nightingale hospital - but there are other ares where major errors have occured and we had the warning, we knew where this was going, we knew a lockdown was coming

The only way this would have been remotely better in terms of UK death toll was if the lockdown was enforced at the same time as Italy and Spain, surely?

The government is doing its best to help as many people to recover from this, both physically and economically. In some people's eyes, they are damned if they do and damned if they don't.

It's going to matter nothing when this is all over as after the third lockdown the current death counts are going to look like nothing.

IMHO of course.

Then the first lockdown should have been earlier surely?

Once this sweeps through the care homes, which it sounds as though it is beginning to do so then numbers could go anywhere

Personally I don't think it was viable to have locked down sooner, the public weren't ready for it IMHO.

In hindsight (great isn't it) Goodwood and Anfield should have been pulled and I thought this at the time. Pubs could probably have been closed a week or even two earlier, I certainly abstained from them and was in dismay when I saw the amount of people still going.

Everyone has an opinion which is fair enough but I just get annoyed at all the experts piping up, it's like a nuclear Brexit.

I honestly think that the current death rate is nothing to what it's going to be, it's going to be a hell of a cull. Mind you the death rate is still just a blip on usual annual deaths, this week last year 12,788 people died in England and Wales.

The care home thing is a big problem and I would say pretty much unstoppable. It's tragic, especially for the relatives who can't visit them. Some care homes are doing as well as they can with their residents but I can imagine some are like hell on earth.

I don't think it took hindsight to see that CHeltenham and letting 3k fans come in from Madrid which was one of the global hot spots was a bad idea - and feels like they leaned too heavily into asking people not to do things rather than just telling them.

There was a graph in the FT yesterday which showed how this isn't a blip - last week was the worst for deaths in England and Wales since records began, and the spike for last week was almost off the scale, will try and find it

Care homes will do as well as they can, but a lot of the staff are just lowly paid workers doing what they can without anywhere near the levels of training or equipment required - my wife's cousin is one and in no way physically or mentally equipped to deal with anything, and she's been in there a few years, 5 years ago she would have been even less equipped when she first started.

It's starting to look like the excess deaths are actually quite large. Someone posted a 5 year average for a couple of weeks ago versus the number this year and it was something like 50% higher.

We won't know the actual excess mortality for a while though.

You can actually read what I post and discuss it with counterpoints.

Or you can carry on with sarcastic remarks that add nothing to the point and just make you look a bit childish.

I'm fine either way, but you'd get more productive responses if you did the former.

I've had a look now and think you've been a bit harsh on me too!

The company Direct Access was good enough to fool the local MP into backing them too, so I don't think it's wrong of me to link to the story. It was also mentioned in Callis's FT link, so more credence there, so i think you're a bit quick to call fake news. Were the Cabinet Office wrong to send him an apology?!

Also, just because the guy has business failures behind him, does that mean he's crap now?

Apart from that, it looks like they were the middle guys - what about Topland (who look like the actual suppliers? Are they also crap and lying too?
Could be - I can't see what site you've used to check it out, but all told, I reject your disaproval (with a smile)!
