Perhaps their king or queen is still relevant in their country. I wouldn't celebrate the Queen much like most of the country wouldnt so we might as well call it "generic public holiday A" and it therefore loses the value of what you are trying to achieve with national unity and pride

Not sure their King is that relevant at all in The Netherlands, I just think that the Dutch aren't as uptight and bitter as some in the UK.

I always find it strange that most people in other countries would love to have our Royal Family but some odd bods over here get all twisted up over them.

One Kings Day I was at (It might have been the day the throne was handed over from Beatrix to Willem) I watched our William getting married to Kate on TV in a bar, the locals all cheered them.

Different mindset Fishy.

Live and let live and all that.

I’ll take any reason for a day off and a party.

I don't get national pride. I mean, you're born where you're born, what is there to be proud of? Now if it was national nurses day, for example...

You are not allowed to even say the words because you may offend somebody. You should be ashamed. St Patrick’s, St Andrews, St Davids and any other you care to mention are absolutely fine and should be celebrated.

Happy St George’s Day.

There is a thought experiment that came up in my philosophy studies about belonging to a nation being like going to bed as a child and being kidnapped so that when you awake as an adult you are on a ship far out at sea. The captain says 'my ship, my rules - you can leave if you don't like 'em' but the two shores visible are five miles distant (in opposite directions). You would drown if tried to swim to them. So you accept your lot.

But this is quite an alienated and bare view of nationality. Most of us have a deep affinity to where we grew up, maybe to our family or friends or teachers, even to some godforsaken foot ball club. Our idea of our country becomes complex and personal to one's self. And we may share many characteristics with others around us. However, the modern nation state adds a formal framework of laws and support networks (such as a health service with nurses) that bind us to a wider sphere by expectations of duty, rewards such as pensions and the use of media and religion to concoct a national story that gives a common identity.

So even if you declare that you do not feel national pride I suspect that subconsciously you do feel some form of patriotism and national identity that informs your beliefs. It may just be that it is not the same set of beliefs as those held by flag waving and anthem singing zealots.

If it was declared a bank holiday I’d bet at least £2.37 he/she wouldn’t go to work.

Those who don’t believe in it or and have principals would treat it as a normal day, unlike when Kate and Wills got hitched all the anti monarchists who didn’t have to work on the extra bank holiday all stayed off berating the royal family.

Quite right to ignore St George's Day. If you must have a patron saint it should be St Alban.

Seems a very outdated concept anyhow.

This is the weird thing for me. When it's St Patricks Day people tend to say "Good on ya" but when it is St Georges Day some people tend to sneer.

All seems a bit double standards to me.

I couldn't give 2 sh*ts about St Patrick's day either. One of those nights where the pubs are full of absolute pr*cks that don't normally go out

I can honestly say I've no interest in any of them, but don't have an issue with any of it, even if it doesn't make any particular sense.

The local usually does a pint of Guinness with a whiskey chaser for a fiver on St Patrick's so I've been known to try that out.

I like the St George's Cross, but do tend to see it as national football icon if I'm honest and don't really tend to associate it with much else.

I get all patriotic come the Euros and the World Cup.

I'm not sure the pub does any decent deals on St George's Day though. Carling reduced doesn't have the same appeal really.

At least St Paddy has something to do with Ireland and St David with Wales.

St George has nothing to do with England.
