I know of seafarers who play ship simulator. On board.
I’ve told my crew if they want to come up on a deep sea passage and steer the actual ship, they can.
I still take it out of autopilot and steer for a little while when I first join. Each ship has it’s own little idiosyncrasies, and I like to be able to give helm orders with confidence.
You don't want to discover "pulls badly to the left" just as you're entering a lock on the Panama Canal.

That's fantastic!
It's also amazing how sophisticated some of these industry simulators have become, particularly flight simulators.
Pilots use them even once they've learned to fly to learn about new planes and airport layouts. Imagine it will get even crazier once VR is properly integrated.
I remember early flight sims where, if you lost concentration or took your hands off the controls for one moment, you were pointing at the ground. Real world light aircraft don't do that.

Crikey, is that still being developed? Must have been in development for over a decade now.
Not sure how much ongoing development there is, but it functions. Even if the AI in single player mode is quite brutal on anything but the easiest settings.

Maritime schools have massive simulators for this purpose.

A few years ago, I remember seeing a TV show where they got a person who had learnt to fly on a flight sim, but never actually flown a plane, to fly and land a real Cessna he had been virtually flying on the flight sim. He did it with a flight instructor next to him of course, but he did it with very little problem..

I learned to fly out in the US, when I came back I loaded up the airfield I was based at and did the same practice flights as I’d done in real life, using the same approaches, altitudes etc and it was spot on. I’d even say it’s easier to fly a real plane because you’re not trying to figure out which key operates which control and real life isn’t laggy!

I used to have a London to Brighton steam train game for the Sinclair ZX Spectrum, Redhill was one of the stations on that run too. Wonder if the game is still the same one underneath and the developers have just put more bells and whistles on as the years have gone by?
