I am soon to open a bar, it is a sports pavilion where our pitches and 3g are we are opening it as a football and family (we have over 50 teams at the club) bar hopefully open 7 days a week.

We are currently entertaining and pricing up breweries and want to canvass opinions.

The 2 easiest choices are marstons and Greene King. The outsiders are molson coors and Heineken. The Heineken set up is different in terms of installation but cant be used by other breweries in the future. They also seem expensive. We are starting with 4 pumps initially but without cask to start with.

What would you want to see as beer options?

Please remember we aren't having cask straight away until we have a definite idea of trade levels and that this is aimed at sports and families.

Cant you be a freehouse and get whatever beer you want from wherever you want at whatever price?

I know breweries do the initial setup for free and kit out the bar but then you are tied in.

Get Red Stripe on tap. Will be a winner I promise you.

Weaker lager - Carlsberg or Fosters
Premium lager - San Miguel or Stella
Cider - Strongbow
IPA - Greene King

People will say these are all rubbish beers, but there is a reason that that is a normal selection in pubs - especially with limited space.

I'm in pubs all day every day, there will be variations on this - but for a small bar, if you aren't doing cask for now, it needs to be along those lines.

Other alternative is instead of a premium 5% beer you just have that as a guest one and cycle through smaller kegs, but less money in that as product more expensive

Is cider popular? I know the fruity things are with teens but they aren't my target market, in fact they are the opposite

You definitely ought to be having a word with TIB... and get some of these there...

https://awaydaysbeer.com

and particularly of interest may be this option...

Once we are established I will be going for guest ales and getting him involved

We have a derby brewing company pub opening nearby so I can't go too heavy down that route in competition with them

We need the funds elsewhere and we need the support. It will be an option for the future though

Yep, you'd be surprised how many drink it - especially on a hot day if there is outdoor area

Those things suggested are far from the best drinks in the world, but 95% of people will happily drink one at a push, and you get bottles to cover the rest.

Think what they have on tap at a football ground, where they have limited choice and high volume sales for a short period. Needs to be cheap, and needs to have one of everything.

Can do cans and bottles to supplement it, but no point trying to think outside the box initially - if people want anything specialist they won't be coming to your sports pavillion

Also, I'm in an all day meeting with a regional ops manager for a big pub chain tomorrow - do you want me to ask what his opinion would be?

we have the potential to be very busy so the breweries are being very competitive. I've been putting the squeeze on GK and he has admitted there is much to play with

Ok, so it's all about giving the guys what they want. Sports club so you're punters are mainly

Male?
Players 18-30?
Parents 30-50?

Presume most people will be driving rather than walking to your venue?

Guess you are not going to have people on a session, rather one or two quick drinks before they head home?

I would definitely focus on lager and cider over ales. Ale drinkers are session drinkers, old, think camra. That is not your punters.

Dont be shy in your snacks, soft drinks. Many people after sports will want to hydrate first.

All of the above are generalisations and there will be people who dont fit them, but dont let that alter the fact that you should target the majority.

And the best person to advise will be your sales rep from the brewery. They know the trade and will be best placed to advise on what should go on the bar.

I'd also go and visit a similar operation and see what they sell, how they do it. Big fridge from a brewery is another thing you can pester them for. Cold lagers/ciders that can be drank on the sidelines on a hot afternoon, could be a winner vs draught beers.

we are lucky on our position that we will be walkable for most people. We have 52 teams in the club and 3 grass 11 a side and 2 small 5 a side 3 g courts. We will have trade every night from the training teams, most are young teams but we are nearly all local with lots of parents. The weekends usually see 3 games on sat and Sunday mornings from older age ground and 2 adult teams. We want to go beyond that though with a regular crowd mostly those connected to the club going tonwatch tv game and play pool and darts. We also have the 52 teams for functions.

I think we will be a very busy place if itngoes to plan because we are reasonably central to the area

Bluefish, it sounds an exciting project. I’m based over in Newark and sell cask, keg and bottle. If you ever fancy some Away Days just give me a shout...Wayne Brewney and Hoppy Robson I’m sure would go down a storm.

Fair point well made. Hard to be a beer snob when it’s sales that matter. Just pop a few bottles of something a touch more sophisticated under the counter for me fella.

Leffe is commercial though and will sell, It's a good beer.

Sloeber would be my choice from Belgium but it's 8% and you only want to have one or two. Duvel is also great but again, 8.5% and you aren't going to sell many.

Never had Kwak.

Most cask drinkers will accept a decent craft beer these days. Not a pseudocraft like that dreadful GK East Coast stuff though. If you were with Heineken, you may well be able to access Beavertown, which is highly drinkable and well regarded.

I’d say play them off each other. Being free of tie, on a yearly basis I get quotes from everyone I can, Greene King are the lowest generally. I give their prices to Mathew Clark and my rep magically finds out he can match them.
Heineken do some great offers with marketing support, Matthew Clark give me a kick back each year based on purchases. Their draught is all the old InBev now Budweiser Owned range (you can get all the Belgian beers mentioned earlier.)
I’d suggest anyone you sign up with - tell them you want one lager line that you can pick and choose from and 2 of the 4 ale pumps. They should still install everything for you and provide cellar service but you can then rotate products. So you could get a local pilsner/keg craft brew from anywhere you want plus a few ales direct from local breweries. Make sure you don’t get locked into a long contract, they are providing the equipment but you need to be able to regularly play them off on other companies.

Kwak is the one with the elaborate wood and glass drinking contraption. I'm surprised hipsters haven't picked up on it and made it more of a 'thing'.

If we are talking Belgian beer I once had a very pleasurable evening at De Garre in Bruges quaffing their house brew and eating cheese. Until Bolero spoiled it all.

Anyone who hasn't done a Belgian beer trip, do it (once this apocalypse is over).

Bruges is lovely, now you’ve brought it up I want to go again.
I’m not sure where it is in Belgium but there’s a bar where they take a shoe as a deposit for any beer glass.

The north of Belgium is fantastic. As for the beer the bottles are tiny but they can blow your head off if you sink them too quickly. There's a underground cellar bar in Bruges which had 1,300 beers to choose from.

As a cider drinker I don't class Strongbow as cider its made from corn starch.
