I still don't care that much but there's now a chance of some play-off excitement.

Pontus Jansson giving us his best Will Norris impression there.

Tried a little flick in his box, didn’t go well.

3-1 (3-2 aggregate)

Maybe under Hurst - we had spells of looking ok under Lambert... well, one spell in the Championship directly following on from the 3-0 reverse at Carrow Road up to the point we were mathematically relegated.

3-1 - could Swansea stage a comeback?

Three particular games in which our defence was utterly embarrassing.

Under Hurst: home 0-2 defeat against Middlesbrough, first goal when Besic had a long run completely unchallenged by our DMC and second one where Chambers made a suicidal pass, the kind of mistake after which you pull your hair.

Under caretaker manager: Millwall away 0-3, that mix-up between Chambers and Bialkowski was like a black comedy.

Under Lambert: that game which was 'icing on the cake' home defeat 2-3 to Bristol City where our goalie and defence gifted them all 3 goals. All 5 of them (goalie and defence) were a group of experienced pros. 4 out of those 5 were 'proper blokes'. Absolute sh1tshow !!!!

So completely disagree with you that our defence defended better in that season than Swansea tonight.

Same old lazy argument.

No real credibility to your post in response to mine.

I’m talking about recruiting well, building a philosophy and culture at the club, recruiting a certain type of player that fits that mould.

Your lazy counter argument : abandon academy!

Discussion over.

That was the first step they took though; disbanded the academy. I see why they did it, they actually made fair moves considering the way the new academy rules looked and still look to screw over smaller clubs. Part of me wonders whether we should try the same approach, picking up players released from the richer clubs rather than 'grow our own' only to see the best move on for nominal fees? Not sure how the fanbase would react to it, admittedly.

Yeah, ok, maybe I exaggerated for affected - mea culpa. But the first goal was especially poor, to be caught on the break when 1-0 up in the tie.

Ah yes, the Improved Performances(that didn't actually have Improved Results attached to them).

That was the run which probably did result in the argument growing that we were slowly getting somewhere. Didn't manifest into anything worthwhile though!

Not sure that's totally fair, consistent performances- even without results - might have been something to build on for this season. At the time it was reasonable to see reasons for optimism I them.

That Lambert didn't build in them, nor on the good start to 2019-20 are bigger reasons for criticism.

Brentford was my grandfather's club I discovered only a couple of years ago, so we're wearing red and white in our household this evening.

My dads club too when he moved from Dublin to Hounslow early 70s.

I have a massive soft spot for them, hope they make the final step.

Pontus Jansson doing what Pontus Jansson does.

Look generally very solid and win everything, but then has a rick in him.

Indeed, but they did so because of the London catchment area. They simply couldn’t compete with big London clubs, Chelsea, Arsenal, Tottenham, West Ham even Fulham.

I don’t think we have that issue, we will as all smaller clubs do get pulled by the elite for special talents, but whilst we are producing the likes of Downes, Woolfenden, Bishop, Mizouni, Dobra, Lankester who are incredibly talented at this level our academy is our strong point.

I’m talking more about other areas of recruitment that Brentford have mastered. We paid £2m for Nsiala and Nolan, Brentford bought Benrahma for that, we bought Jackson for £1.6m, Brentford bought Maupay for that. I’d like to see us go further afield than Shrewsbury and Accrington Stanley, to really tie alongside academy products.

I’m not sure whether that was down to our scouting system or Hurst had seen these players and put his own rating and cost on them; particularly Nsiala, Nolan and possibly Edwards.

It will be interesting to see how much faith Lambert shows in the likes of Dobra and El Mizouni next season; they didn’t get a proper run out in 19/20 even when the goals dried up. Bishop and Lankester would have no doubt played more games had it not been for injuries.

I think Hurst identified his targets, and Evans foolishly paid over the odds.
, perhaps lack of due diligence, perhaps a little bit of blind faith in supporting his manager, perhaps the lack of a real football man at the club, I think Ian Milne was director at that time. All very silly hindsight.

You have to learn from mistakes and build a model going forward though.

I think El Mizouni and Dobra will feature more this year, Bishop and Lankester certainly will if fit. We have the ingredients for a very good side this year if all remain fit, and I hope we can build this academy centric model for the future, which I think Lambert wants ultimately, especially with the talent now consistently coming through. Probably the key reason I don’t want to roll the dice on Lambert yet and allow him this season to see if he can build around these academy grads.

Proper old ground innit:

Beautiful ground.

I took a photo of it with an old Leica camera from the bridge overlooking it after the 4-2 game in the play-off season. When I got it developed it looked amazing so I got it blown up and framed. My favourite English ground apart from PR.

My key concern is a lack of strength, which is something which won’t come from the academy unless there’s a 16-year old built like Wayne Rooney when he first appeared, who can hold his own. I think we have a large squad of players supposedly at their peak who may make it difficult for players to come through - Edwards, Sears and Jackson play wide; will Lambert drop or move them on to make room for Dobra and El Mizouni? Will they be given a chance to prove they can? I think ‘if all remain fit’ is key as well; we haven’t had much luck in that regard over the past few seasons.

I’ll miss Griffin Park. Great little ground. “Proper” in every sense.

I'll never forget the boxing day game there, having a beer in the pub Christmas atmosphere, excitement for the game as we were going well, then straight into the ground. It is my favourite away game I've ever been to.

Dobra has to be a key man next season, and hopefully a system and position is found for Dozzell to get the best out if him. I feel it would be best to clear out some of the old guard to freshen it up, reduce the wage bill and allow talented kids with some vim into the match squad.

If we had Paul Cook or someone of his ilk in charge I'd be confident of at least the play-offs.
