So - Tommy Smith? 12:24 - Aug 19 with 7608 viewsFixed_It

From what I've read he didn't do himself any favours last night. A towering performance and there were 2 managers to impress, as he could have caught PL's eye. Shame, because I really liked him.

I love how people think preseason friendlies are somehow meaningful.

60 games out of a potential 68 in the last two years, I think it’s fair to say his injury problems are behind him...

For my part, anyone with an injury history is a no-go, simply because of the trouble we have had with long standing injuries in recent years. Huws and Bishop are the worst examples but Dozzel, Nydam and now Morris have all been through it.

I wouldn't want anyone else here who wasn't proven to be rock solid on the injury front, or at least not proven to have an injury weakness.

Those kind of players are few and far between, Matt Holland is the one that comes to mind, but other than those kind of rare exceptions I think it’s fair to say that all players have an injury history, picking up injuries is an occupational hazard for a footballer.

What we don’t want is any more sicknotes or crocks, Tommy Smith is not one of those.

Phil posted it last week with regards to Murphy and Smith potentially being seen as too close to Skuse and Chambers

I'm not disputing whether it was said or not, I'm saying it doesn't seem to make any sense. What would be the problem with them being friends? Skuse and Chambers seem fairly likeable blokes and I imagine they're close to most of the squad. Would bringing Tommy Smith in make that much of a difference in that regard?

I bet Bloots will downarrow this.

I suspect that, having worked under decent managers previously, Chambo and Skuse can see that the current incumbent is stealing a living. Another person in the squad who is aligned with them and likely to reach a similar conclusion wouldn't make life any easier for Lambert.

None of the other players Lambert has signed have played under decent managers?

I don't know. Maybe. Regardless, surely they would be fairly quickly.

I know you desperately want this to be another stick to beat Lambert with but without any evidence I'm going to go with the most likely option, that the management team simply don't rate Smith enough. They may well be wrong with that assessment, but the idea Lambert would feel threatened by his friendship with two players who are presumably pretty friendly with most of the squad, many of whom have played under decent managers as well, seem a bit fanciful.

If I were Lambert I'd want the best players available to me. That would be the best way of saving his job. If we don't perform he'll lose that job regardless of who's friends with who.

I fear you may think too much of Lambert.

Whatever you think of his abilities as a manager, he's not stupid and is unlikely to cut off his own nose to spite his face.

Yet Chambers, how did you put it, "struggled against poor opposition" in a defence that conceded no goals.
