So - Tommy Smith? 12:24 - Aug 19 with 7611 viewsFixed_It

From what I've read he didn't do himself any favours last night. A towering performance and there were 2 managers to impress, as he could have caught PL's eye. Shame, because I really liked him.

I have to say, although I acknowledge that Smith pick up the odd injury, I don't recognise this picture some people paint of him being a crock.
Issues with his back over his final two seasons here, he was regularly hitting 40 appearances a season.

His last season and a half here though he only managed 13 appearances in total.

Yup, persistent back injury, very difficult to get over - however he has since proven that he is over it, missing only 8 games in two years.
Before his back injury he regularly hit 40 appearances a season, or thereabouts.

Wasn't that also because for most of that time there were 3 other centre backs competing for the 2 positions (Chambers, Berra and Webster)

Yes. I don't believe it was all because of injury.

Combination of injury and slipping down the pecking order. I think Berra had also left by his final season here but I think at that time we also had CCV ahead of Tommy on loan.

Someone said that Joe shared on Twitter that there is hesitancy on Lambert's part due to Smith's friendship with Skuse and Chambers.
I'm just repeating what was a paraphrase of a tweet, so maybe Joe can clarify on that?

If that is the case that's pathetic in my book, shows just how little control the man has and how poor his man management must be.
Re:Rhodes, Smith is good friends with Jordan too, although I'm pretty sure the Rhodes link was pure paper talk.

That would be a bit odd and doesn't really make any sense. I'm sure Skuse and Chambers are friends with most of the squad.

I bet Bloots will downarrow this.

In his last season here Tommy Smith started 3 games.

Birmingham at home first game of the season.
Cardiff away at the end of October.
Fulham away beginning of January.

CCV did not arrive until after Tommy Smith's last start.
Smith was injured for chunks of the season but at Cardiff he started badly and got worse during the course of the game and was not too clever at Fulham either although in both cases the fact that he had not played for a while could not have helped.

He didn't but it's so hard to judge based on a friendly like that. The rather irritating commentator seemed impressed with Nsiala

I think those saying Smith is a step up on Nsiala are being a bit unfair. We don't know what level Smith is at and Nsiala was good for Shrewsbury. It's possible we'll see him perform at a decent standard this season if he stays.

Truly impaired.

I struggle with that idea.... if Chambo/Skuse were an issue Skuse could certainly have been moved on instead of being extended?

Neither will be around much longer in a playing capacity surely so I don't know why that would be an issue

Would be worth a trial but given lack of games and injury record, the jury remains out.

Happy for him to show he is worth a contract, equally he should not be offered one on sentiment.

60 games out of a potential 68 in the last two years, I think it’s fair to say his injury problems are behind him...

I thought he had a very good game last night, taking into account his overall contribution, his lack of familiarity with his team-mates, and the fact that ColU's MF were fairly overrun in the first game. He certainly helped the defence keep shape when there was a risk of falling apart.
When he left Town, it was felt his back injury wouldn't give him more than about 30 games a season, which is what he played in the MLS. He is too good for League 2, and could form a very strong partnership with Tom Eastman. And

Sorry, are you his agent?

He needs to show he can perform at L1 level and is better than what we have, hence a trial. He has played micky mouse US football since he left us. Most of the TWTD board could get a US contract....

If he's that good a player still, then why hasn't he had any offers from teams better than Colchester?

Even if he's wanting to stay local, there are a fair few clubs at the lower end of the Championship and in League One that would be realistic options for him.

Would you still be hell-bent on signing a player with his recent history if his name didn't happen to be Tommy Smith?

Who though, bearing in mind he lives in Ipswich? Other than Colchester you are talking longer commutes to worse clubs in Southend or Cambridge, or relocating

All about money. If he receives some decent offer from either Championship or League One then location won't be a problem. He's entering his 30's so now his career will be mainly about money and getting decent contract from somewhere.

Richard Wright used to tell the world how he missed his family whilst at Preston. You remember what happened after he had cancelled his contract with them, eh?

Smith picked up a good contract at Sunderland and went there short term, to suggest best he can get now is Colchester is a bit silly - he could easily get more if he relocated.

Wright didn't miss his family, he hated Graham Westley

Picked up a good Sunderland contract that they didn't want to extend for a new season because they seemingly have better defenders than him.

Location/commuting won't be a problem if he gets a decent offer. So far Colchester are the only option for him.

Wright may have hated Westley but we all had heard the stories about missing his family.

He was someone to try and help them get promoted, then this thing called Covid happened which has massively changed everything.

Do you know him? I’ve spoken to a few people who do and he is desperate to stay in the area - he wouldn’t even be giving Col U a second look if he was happy to move.

Bailey Wright former Bristol City defender had also been signed by Sunderland to help them promoted. He had joined them in January (a month before Smith's arrival) initially on loan and now he's their permanent player. This so called covid somehow didn't stop them to offer him a permanent deal this month. Smith however wasn't deemed good enough and was released. If he had been good enough then he would have been offered a one or two year deal, don't you think?

No I don't know him personally but what I know is that we can't trust footballers/managers these days when it comes to finances. Do you think he'd stay at Colchester if he was offered a good offer from either Championship or League One club?

I'd take him over Nsiala and Wilson if one of those 2 moved on. Like previously mentioned, he's 30 and brings more than 250 Championship appearances to the table.
Nsiala's confidence and concentration is too fragile, despite there obviously being a strong defender in there and Wilson will never be more than a 6 out of 10 player.

No mate, just someone who is trying to readdress the misinformation surrounding him.
It appears the majority of the board have views about Smith that are based on assumption and conjecture, thought I’d just offer people some context.
