On an evening when the opening speaker, who appeared to be a human hide draped over a collection of wet and deeply regrettable farts, claimed that Trump is the 'bodyguard of Western civilisation', the gaslighting was strong on the opening night of the RNC.

It seems that the Republican strategy for the election is as simple as 'lie, lie and lie some more'. It's going to be a long few months.

From beginning to end, the whole thing was an example of up being down, left being right, inside being outside. Don't trust what your eyes and experiences tell you, trust what I say instead. Grandma is dead but Donald has done a magnificent job saving her life.

I'm sure the cult lapped it up, but I can't believe it played well with the constituents who live in reality. The tweet below gives a flavour of the event. FWIW I think that the UK is well on it's way to approximating this kind of political leadership, so no sneering about yanks please.

Oh and this is nice to see. Kill the base before they get to vote.

And finally... That moment when the botox just hurts too darn much.

Seems like he is resigned to losing the election, and will concentrate his efforts on questioning the legality of it, by embarking on a long process of taking this through the courts, which may delay his removal from the White House.

The plan will now be:

- accept there will be mail in voting
- suppress the walk in vote as much as possible
- claim victory on the night from those votes cast in person
- claim the election is being stolen by the Dems as the mail in votes get counted
- get his base to protest/riot at the unfair stealing of the election

I’m fairly sure the Speaker of the House gets to be (Temporary) President if it isn’t resolved by Jan 20th.

One hopes that a defeat "on the night" is by a sufficiently large margin that any challenge becomes untenable. After all he's said, Trump can hardly then pin his hopes on the mail-in vote.

The last clip was rather funny.

I didn't see anything on her face move above her teeth. It was like a wax mask with a bottom jaw moving.

Oh dear. Age naturally and with grace and sexyness.

Assumption is to make an ass out of you and me. Those who assume they know you, when they don't are just guessing. Those who assume and insist they know are daft and in denial. Those who assume, insist, and deny the truth are plain stupid. Those who assume, insist, deny the truth and tell YOU they know you (when they don't) have an IQ in the range of 35-49.

It is misinformation and division and on a massive scale!!

Imagine if he got in again? Or if he didn’t the monster he’s created rises up under the mail vote fraud with M16s at the ready

Heart and soul of America at stake here.....

How with a straight face can they laud his CV response?! The bleach, the I’ll proven drug push, the masks, the downplay.... and now they’re trying to put it on the ‘commie’ democrat mayors... who actually got the infections down as Texas and Florida surge

It’s like shout loud, lie, play on hate/fear and get re-elected

Division is also very easy. You only have to appeal to 'your' people, everything wrong is 'their' fault and finding compromise is hard and takes skill.

If anyone ever complains about our own democratic system, they just need to look across the pond.

What a mess.

Trump or Biden.
One is a psychopath and the other barely has a pulse.
Neither are electable.

Where is the third choice? in fact, why do they not have more choices?
Why is it so binary?
Does that drive extreme politics more? I think it might.

There may be the odd Ruby Ridge incident, perhaps even to the extent of another Oklahoma Bombing, but I really doubt there would be any kind of widespread armed uprising if Trump loses.

Or that it would stand a chance of succeeding. They may have M16s, but lack the aircraft, armoured vehicles and heavy weaponry to which even the Federal authorities have access, let alone calling in the National Guard/Army.

That is a gross underestimate of Biden's worth imo. Sure he is not the most exciting candidate, but he is the only one that unites the Democrats as well as appealing to some disaffected Republicans. Hopefully Kamala will provide the energy for the campaign.

It was more a point about a binary choice being suboptimal.

I'm guessing it's particular flavour of Christian who doesn't believe that love, forgiveness or charity are applicable to anyone who is a 'different' person.
