Happens moderately frequently. Often when people are walking dogs near cows with calves and don't know the golden rule - if attacked, abandon the dog (it can probably look after itself) and get over the nearest fence/gate. Or if there is a particularly aggressive bull.

Good Lord! Whatever is it?

Heard of a similar case recently where a cow basically knocked someone to the ground and then lay on them repeatedly, causing really bad injuries. They are especially unpredictable when they have calves.

Doesn't even need to be aggression on the part of the cows, they're very curious animals and all it takes is for someone to stumble and fall, one to take an interest in you and the rest will all follow.

I'm one of the people who was blamed for getting Paul Cook sacked. PM for the full post.

Always pays to have walking poles or a large stick around cows.

First time I went to South Africa we went on a bush walk with an old ranger who solved the problem of water buffalo in the way by hurling rocks at them, I wouldn't recommend throwing stones at dogs but a few aimed close to cattle soon shift them.

I was somewhere in Rajasthan, possibly Jaisalmer way, and there was a lane I had to use each day which had a skinny turban wearing cobra-in-a-basket man sitting t the side as a semi-permanent fixture.

Anyways, a Canadian chap I knew was attacked by one of the several cows that wandered about freely and had him pinned up against a wall. He said he couldn't breathe nor free himself, and he wasn't a small man.

Cobra man ran over with a stick and beat the cow until he let him go.

Canadian guy reckoned skinny cobra man probably saved his life.

He was full of bruises and had sore ribs for a while.
