Not strictly true. The Queen herself has always been careful to keep out of politics. But other members of the family - including the heir to the throne, frequently - have expressed political views.
Previous monarchs also had a significant impact upon policy, even since the post-1714 (partly forced) withdrawal from direct involvement. |  |

I think it's a grey area as they are now outside of the Royal family and basically have no formal role.
It's the problem that will beleaguer them for their rest of their lives like Edward VIII, people are peripherally interested in them, their egos compel them to keep talking but frankly their compulsion to leave captivity means the content is meaningless and will fade as their relevance dwindles. Given that they're now effectively private individuals, surely they can can issue as many political statements as they want, just like any other celebrity couple?

Given the issues they're speaking about (rejecting hate speech, promoting democracy), are general ones rather than specifically party political - much like Charles' longtime advocacy of environmental matters - then it shouldn't be a problem.
Unless, that is, the Republicans are keen to align themselves with being antidemocratic and fuelled by racism. | |
