Why on earth bring on your last sub after 55 mins when 1-0 up?! 16:27 - Oct 3 with 2926 viewsMatt_Netherlands

Could do with Jackson running in behind.

(Sub had been ready to make before MK scored!)

Surely Lambert should’ve seen this situation coming?! Especially when players were dropping like flies as it was!!

Almost posted we were taking a risk doing that with so long to go before the changes were made. Downes needed to come on but don’t think Judge for Sears was necessary and now we’ve paid the price for it.

One sub would have been better, and not so "nae normal" ;)

Should have subbed Downes on at half time imo.

Obviously the Downes injury is not down to Lambert though, I'll grant that ;)

Don’t buy that! Sticking one on would’ve helped to shore us up - sticking both one was as if we were chasing the game from behind

I did think to myself "aye? Still go 40 minutes left, so should probably save one until 75 mins". Downes for Bishop was always going to happen. Was Sears puffing?

Judge for Sears was a very odd one and harsh on Sears, in my eyes.

Disagree. People moan when Lambert took forever to make changes last season. We were getting battered and he tried to change things with fresh legs. The proof that we were under the cosh is that nobody was surprised by the equaliser, before we could get the subs on. Nothing you can do about Downes getting injured straight away, just one of those things.

With Downes NOT getting injured we could have had enough with the fresh legs to stem the tide and perhaps look for a winner rather than hanging on. Had we got it we'd all be saying it was a masterstroke by Lambert.

9 times out of 10 that injury doesn't happen, so changing things was a calculated but positive risk that didn't come off.

I bet Bloots will downarrow this.

Did we actually make the subs before the equaliser went in, we were certainly readying them?

We started the second half appallingly

Do we give MK dons any credit for turning the game around or was it all down to us playing poorly.

It wouldn’t have been a masterstroke, it’d have still been an unnecessary risk but it would’ve paid off. Can’t predict that sort of thing happening but making your last sub (and we only really needed to get Downes into the midfield) with over half an hour to go is a bit daft and it backfired.

I don't agree it was an unnecessary risk. They were looking more and more likely to equalise (and perhaps worse), so he made changes to change our fortunes.

It didn't work in terms of swinging the game to get us 3 points, but we came away with 1 so no real harm done. I think it's a positive sign he's going for the win.

If we hadn’t made a sub already, I’d agree with you. But the fact is that even if we’d still had 11 players on the pitch, we wouldn’t have had anyone to bring on for the last 15 minutes to have an impact and stretch an MK dons defensive line which had an average age of about 42! A Lankaster or a Jackson could’ve been a great outlet towards the end.

Like you say though, we still came away with a point which most of us would probably have taken from today after a decent start.

They didn't turn it around as such because they were the better side almost throughout.

They started the game better than us, despite the fact that we scored.

They finished the game better than us, although the extra man obviously helped.

They won and controlled midfield just about throughout the game.

They deserved to win the game.

So our start to the season is much like last year, results better than the performance and some fortunate goals.

Let’s hope the second half of the season is 100% better than last season.

Going for the win by replacing a forward and an attacking midfielder with a combative midfielder and whatever Alan Judge is meant to be?

No, subs were made after they equalised. But they were being readied in order to get a foothod in the game.

The Downes one makes sense by that logic to give us a bit more bite in the middle. Judge for Sears was the questionable one - must’ve been hoping he would have the experience we needed, although in fairness I didn’t think he did too badly once he was on. Takes some real Glaswegian stubbornness to have two subs ready to go, and stick with those two subs when the score line has just changed!

He got moaned at for bringing subs on too late last season, now he's getting moaned at for bringing subs on too early.

As Phil says in his report, "Having made their switches of personnel, the Blues started to see more of the ball than earlier in the half."

So it was having the desired effect, and with plenty of time to turn that into a winner. The Downes injury was just unfortunate. One of those things.

I bet Bloots will downarrow this.

No. I dispute this. We thoroughly deserved to win our first 3 games this season, and should have won a couple of them by more goals with all the clearcut chances we had.

You're trying too hard fella. From Phil's report:

That's exactly what was needed, and is how we would've gone on to win. The Downes injury was just one of those things.

Scenario didn't change too much though, we needed to get hold of the ball more. And actually we did that for the spell between the goal and Downes getting injured.
