We need to sign a midfielder on loan 09:55 - Oct 9 with 3858 viewsSomethingBlue

It's vital we get someone in who can do the defensive and more physical stuff properly for a few months, even if just as a shoring-up option from the bench. I don't think we can sustain a strong promotion challenge without that, so we need to work out a way to do it. And no I'm not preparing excuses for the manager, just to nip the boring stuff in the bud. Our injuries are at a point where I can't see them not seriously damaging us.

I'm not really suggesting swapping Dozzell or anyone else, not from the start. But I'm suggesting having some lump off the bench, at least, to involve if the existing three are struggling. It'll happen sometimes. If Downes had stayed on the pitch at MK I think we may well have won that game, I think we saw a discernible impact in those few minutes. It's not a question of whether we can outplay teams — of course we should be able to do that against most. It's just stuff that any team might need during a game.

I'd add that "dropping deeper & deeper" isn't always a conscious choice — it can happen when a team has simply got on top of you in the duels and stops you imposing yourself.

I agree with you. And it really shouldn't surprise anyone if one of Dozzell, Nolan or (most likely) Bishop pick up an injury soon. We'd then look short of numbers let alone just an enforcer type.

I don't see why we were so quick to send El Miz out. Similarly I don't understand why we are so keen to get Dobra out the door with our injury record. Good for their development? Maybe. But two decent players that could make an impact here as part of our squad.

The solution I'd rather is taking the game up the field, not always easy but put the emphasis on the front 3 to offer a threat and retain the ball longer

How are you going to get them the ball though? I agree there will be games where what we have now is fine, and we've seen that already — but we do need a solution for when it isn't.

I'd pass it through the lines but PRP prefers lumping it up there, either way it has to stick and stay

For the record, good football chat, it is nice to have someone to talk football with and great to see you give a definite opinion. I don't necessarily agree fully (more wage cap based) but I can completely see where you are coming from

I can't see the state of nydam's recovery and it was a horrific injury but that surprises me. He is a natural football (look at how he can play anywhere on the pitch) so I would expect him to bounce back and get upto speed quickly. He is like Dyer in that way from what I've seen

Agreed - maybe at least see how he gets on in full training and a couple of U23 games before passing judgement.

It's not an easy one either financially or balance-wise, I agree; hopefully we get the next few months right but I look at the current absentees and think on paper we now look like a decent L1 side rather than a very strong one.

Let's go through the numbers again

Fit

Dozzell (anywhere)
Nolan (anywhere preferably middle or top)
Bishop (anywhere preferably middle or top)
Huws (anywhere)
Judge (top of the 3)
McGavin (bottom or middle of the 3)
Lankester (top of the 3)

Injured short term

Nydam (anywhere)

Injured longer term

Skuse (bottom or middle)
Downes (anywhere)

On loan

El Mizouni (middle or top)

I'm not convinced that we need more. Especially when compared to strikers or full backs. We need to shift some dead wood

*Top middle bottom used to shoe tendencies opposed to exactly fits

LOL at 'Nydamm short-term injured'.

I'm one of the people who was blamed for getting Paul Cook sacked. PM for the full post.

Unles we shift some serious deadwood between now and next Friday ( 16th is deadline day? ) we are going to have to look at what we already have. Only player I can see who can do the Downes style job is Huws but is he really going to be able to play for the next 4-5 months without getting injured again. The one fit player who might be able to do that job ( not to the same extent mind ) is out on loan at Cambridge until January, El-Miz is not a like for like replacement for Downes but he is more physical than any of the other current midfield 3 and has played both Centre half and DM for the age group sides before ( certainly not going to play centre half for us now but you get the idea he can tackle! )

Which of those players can perform the specific role of getting us a physical, niggly if necessary, foothold in midfield when we can't get on top of it — because there will be games like that, and it doesn't need to be a reflection on the personnel you list or anyone else.

McGuiness maybe? I have no idea, but thought it was mentioned he could play defensive midfield if necessary.

Ready! Steady! Cook!

I said at the start of last season that we need a nasty, street wise, experienced midfielder who knows Division 1. Whilst Downes has some of those attributes, he's still young, too easily wound up and now very injured.

The kind of player we need would make this place erupt if we signed him (wrongly) but that position remains our Achilles Heel and will cost us games.

I guess it's down to Huws and McGavin to step up?

Alcohol is the answer but I can't remember the question!
