Any tech whizzos able to help pls? Now getting no more than a few Kbps on Chrome when it's worked at a good speed for over 4 years. Have deleted cookies/chaches for all time, didn't help; deleting last 7 days' browsing helped get me those few Kbps but not enough for hotmail or gmail.
Maybe it was old version from about 2 years ago - would uninstalling and downloading new version help?
Also - can anyone recommend phone service providers who do wifi calling from mobile please? Cheers if you can help. |  |

Have you tried closing all Chrome processes in Task Manager? Go into the details tab and force it to close there.
That helps with Chrome at times, the updated version probably would too. |  |

I'd try uninstalling and reinstalling. Bear in mind that you might want to back up things like bookmarks etc. if you are not signed into a Google account (as that backs them up). On a side note, you really should keep the browser updated.
If that doesn't work there are probably a few other things to look at / try.
As for wifi calling:

Thanks Dan. I tried making sure I'd got all the latest updates installed, restarted, uninstalled old Chrome, installed new Chrome from a safe site - and still getting same issue. Have a few Kbps connection which allows a few basic sites (but not enough for email or to register more than 0 speed on fast.com). :(
Problem is I hate Safari! Grey text on black background for toolbars, grr!
Could you tell me what th other things to try are please? Using a mac Mojave 10.14

If you type into Google just "Speed test" and click the button you get, what are you seeing?

Back on laptop now.
It did get google options for me, but speed's too low to allow me to get onto test sites - as in

That's really interesting, I was thinking about it but decided to go with Firefox as my second browser, just on the grounds of familiarity really - am on that now and quite pleased with it - not quite as fast as Chrome (when it was working at its best) or Safari, but far more user-friendly than the latter. Can actually see tabs! and it's storing my logins, which Safari didn't.
What's good about Brave that makes you recommend it? | |

One thing that may help while you're stuck with Safari - if your main issue is grey text on black background. This is part of Mac's optional "dark mode". If you go to settings on main menu bar and select general you can set to "light" which amongst other thing will change the safari toolbar to a light background.
Personally while I've used other browsers I always come back to Safari as it simply works best and fastest on Mac. But accept everyone has their own preference. [Post edited 9 Oct 2020 23:07]
