Masks until next winter... on 14:00 - Dec 9 by J2BLUE | It's the light at the end of the tunnel. The media seem obsessed with negativity. I suppose it sells better than positive stuff. They are desperately trying to spin it as we are in dark times where the benefit of the vaccine is months away, which is true, but to me I think it's pretty damn amazing that these vaccines have been created so quickly and we will be back to normal very soon. I also don't think it helps when they keep using headlines like it will be years before we return to normal then when you read the story people will have the minor inconvenience of wearing masks and they are talking about globally rather than on the little island the vast majority of us spend 95%+ of our time. |
It's important to strike the right balance between relentless negativity and toxic positivity.

When you talk about the 'minor inconvenience' of wearing masks, what do you mean? If you mean in enclosed spaces (shops, public transport etc) during colder months then fine, that's a minor inconvenience. If you mean all the time, everywhere, for example, then that is not a minor inconvenience and can't be seen as a return to 'normal'. Or do you mean something in the middle, such as enclosed spaces year round? To me that is also not a return to normal. I could perhaps get on board with option 1, as long as everything else in life is very much 'normal'. Genuinely interested as to what you find acceptable.

Like it is now. In shops, hospitals, doctors etc, all year around. Other places like restaurants, pubs, schools, football etc it almost certainly wouldn't apply. Some will disagree and say that isn't acceptable but IMO they need to look at the big picture.

I can't speak for him but I cannot see anyone feeling that wearing a mask all year round would be a minor inconvenience. But it has been stressed several times, on here anyway, that it's difficult to see why wearing one for short periods in enclosed public spaces during the winter months could be viewed as anything but sensible.

In pubs would we need to continue with table service etc or can we mingle as before? If so then why can we mingle without a mask in a pub, but have to wear a mask in a shop?

Putting the media I aside for one second, as I agree they love their doom and gloom, seeing as the pandemic is ongoing I think it's fine to give people the space to process their feelings and their experiences over this year in whatever way they see fit. Some of them may not be ready to throw open the windows and sing hallelujah to the skies just yet (despite the incredibly good news we are receiving). I know some people in my life are still feeling pretty beaten up by the last 9 months or so, and hearing that that they should be feeling positive and to cheer up won't be that helpful when they're still feeling awful.

Probably because it would be difficult to eat and drink in a pub whilst wearing a mask, whereas wearing a mask in a shop does not cause the same level of issue. So basically, wearing a mask where it's feasible.

Supermarkets have got to be the worst for transmission of disease haven't they? Shopping trolleys should be cleaned regularly anyway and not just a token spray here and there because there's some plague about. People you see walking out of the toilets without washing their hands and then shopping in a place selling food ffs.

Re your last sentence. If for example Covid is under control and somewhat endemic on a scale like the flu by next winter, why do we need to continue wearing masks to prevent any and all transmission of colds, flu, Covid? We never did this before; people just caught a cold or flu. My point is where do we stop with putting in these types of measures to prevent illness spreading in society? Not wanting to sound flippant, but there are so many more causes of illness and death which are 'acceptable' to us.

I agree, people are grim. Same as people walking out of the toilet at the gym and going back to the equipment without hand washing (I've even seen trainers do this).

Because I don't want someone else's cold or flu thanks! I want them to keep it to themselves. Plus all the reasons people have been saying about it being better for the economy if we consider the loss of productivity etc. General well-being mate. Nothing worse than someone coming home full of it, looking and feeling like crap, and then everyone else in the household like it a day or 2 later. I'm all for employing a few sensible measures.

OK, but you didn't address the point re pub table service (not normal) or mingling freely (normal). I know this is only a minor point and it doesn't bother me as I never go to the pub, but these are the type of inconsistencies which end up confusing people as to what the rules are and why.

Fair enough! Do you think this should be some sort of a legal requirement or just suggestions based on better public health education? The idea of it being 'illegal' to not wear a mask when you have a cold seems crazy.

I was just giving you my opinion on what I would consider the maximum acceptable mask restrictions. Anything less is obviously better, if possible. Three reasons why pubs and not shop: 1) It's far more feasible in a shop. Take gains where you can 2) Age range in pubs is, i'm guessing, at a much lower average than supermarkets which seem to attract pensions like pollen attracts bees. Especially the supermarkets 3) As more get vaccinated and the virus is less prevalent the focus will shift to the economy and pubs have suffered enough while shops will barely suffer at all if people are asked to wear a mask.

Because it makes sense to do what we can when we can. I am not interested in a pub where I cannot pull up a stool at the bar and annoy everyone. I mean chat to people. That's not to say precautions cannot be taken elsewhere. I expect those serving my food and drink to take sensible precautions for me as their customer. Like serve drink in a clean glass with clean hands etc. I also prefer pubs with toilet doors that you don't feel obliged to open with your shoe.

It would be nice if people weren't such selfish pricks and did the right thing of their own accord. We both know that's not gonna happen.

Fair point. As i've repeatedly said though there's plenty who haven't been affected much who seem to be reveling in dire predictions and baseless negativity. Even when the government and medical advisors say one thing they'll say another. Agree on the media, they've been dire. Especially Peston and Kuenssberg.

The point is that perhaps we should have done this before. It's an incredibly poor argument to say "we didn't used to do it so why should we do it now". The argument should evolve with the evidence and the evidence is clear that wearing masks, especially in the winter, will prevent a lot of transmission of respiratory illness. Your last sentence is silly, if we could prevent these other causes in such a simply way we should. Honestly, the fuss and pushback about wearing a small mask for a short time is utterly ridiculous. I am realistic and would be happy if it was just over the winter months, at least as a start. The fact that you have an entirely illogical attitude to the subject doesn't bode well for that hope though if there are others like you. SB
