Masks until next winter... 00:47 - Dec 9 with 5164 viewsElderGrizzly

Even with a vaccine, it was never going to return to normal quickly. The scale of the challenge in rolling it out fully, was always going to take until September.

Masks next winter shouldn’t be a surprise

Give it a year, do you know what lessons a lot of people will learn from the last year? Absolutely none.

We need the Government to learn so they can put provisions in place to prepare for this happening again - I have more hope for America’s next administration than for the U.K. unless the Tories push Johnson out for someone more competent.

I think that's rather pessimistic, it's all about proportion really, as soon as enough people are vaccinated and the cases of illness and death drop to around the same level or less than flu, they won't be needed thank goodness.

I don’t believe it will be a legal requirement to wear masks in shops and hospitality settings, as it is now. Most likely it will be advisory.

The part I don’t understand is the fear of infecting other people even if you’ve been vaccinated. If all vulnerable groups are also vaccinated then you won’t infect them. If the majority of the population are vaccinated then yiu won’t infect them. That will leave a small minority of anti vaxers you may infect, and to be frank fcuk them. If they are young with no underlying health conditions then there won’t be an issue.

I think you are right, we shouldn't be scared of not getting enough herd immunity because of anti-vaxxers when the solution is to take the vaccine.

I think the Oxford one will become dominant next year which seems to be less successful at spreading infection but more successful in preventing serious illness.

I can only think it is those who cannot have vaccines because of allergic reactions who will be directly affected by not enough people taking up the vaccine.

You're right that I am not basing my arguments on any logic or objective information. I'm a human being with emotions and obviously very keen to go back to my way of life* exactly as I knew it for almost 30 years up until now, therefore my comments are from an emotion-based perspective.

If you don't think that my posts are especially well thought through, this is likely because I was hurriedly making them from my phone whilst at work in a busy hospital.

I don't think my last sentence was 'silly'. We have plenty of logical information which states that fatty food, alcohol, cigarettes etc are highly linked to illnesses which cause huge numbers of deaths each year, and yet such products are still easily accessible and advertised all the time. Why are we not actively restricting availability and consumption of such things in an equivalent way to that in which we are going down the route of using face masks? There are many more examples I could come up with regarding a selective focus on public health issues.

I also don't believe that your 'others like you' comment is necessary or justified, given that my only crime is being attached to things as they were. I'm following the rules the same way as I assume you are. That doesn't mean I have to be happy about them.

* the same general way of life that you presumably enjoyed yourself. Unless you've always been an advocate/regular user of face masks before 2020, in which case I apologise.

I don't think it's the same at all. Changing the consumption of something like alcohol would be a huge long-term project.

Wearing a mask is a few situations that I have highlighted for a few months of the year is a tiny thing that can be changed in order to prevent a large number of illnesses.

As for your * point, I change my opinions based on the evidence. You are essentially saying nothing should ever change, I don't agree with that stance. Wearing a mask in a few situations is hardly a ground breaking change to life as we know it.

I simply don't understand your reluctant attitude to do something so small for such a short amount of time and thus we won't agree on this and probably best to leave it there.

I think the reason South East Asia managed to control Covid far better in than the likes of Europe and the USA is they had already had experienced something of a similar nature, with SARS. The public and respective governments learned their lessons from the outbreak and were able to adapt and manage far better because of it.

We’ve now suffered from something horrendous which, when done, will result in a terrible number of deaths, the termination of jobs and the cessation of businesses. If we as an entirety do not learn it will happen again; the SARS outbreak was 18 years ago so it’s not beyond the realms of possibility that the next one will be little more than a decade away.

You're correct, they learnt and one of the things they learnt is that using masks on things like public transport, especially during the winter is a sensible thing to do.

They were doing this long before C19 came along because they took onboard the lessons.

Just reading this thread shows that there is a portion of the population who aren't willing to take onboard the lessons and essentially want to pretend the last year hasn't happened.

Expecting a different result when you continue to do the same things is madness as Einstein once said.
