I remember that Bobby Ferguson thought that our defence should be good enough in that league to just play 3 at the back. But rather than it being 3 centre halves playing close together like we see today, it was more like one centre half with two full backs playing quite wide. I think it was Irvin gernon I saw trying to play there and it was woeful. It was dropped after awhile but was really odd.

Frank Yallop did not play until the 4th game of the season, looks like Romeo Zondervan started the season at RB.

His first game had Zondervan, Atkins and McCall and nobody else that could have logically played at the back, it was midweek and we lost at home to Oldham so that is likely the game you remember. But if Zondervan was RB it was a flat back four I suppose.

He was more circa 83/84. I saw him play in a few football combination games at PR. He hit the scoreboard with a wayward shot and the scoreboard flashed 'Owch'. Funny the things you remember.

Think it was 1-1 yes.
Other memories for me:

Missing a penalty home v Derby and then losing 2-0, thinking we still had a chance of automatic promotion if we won that one.

From what I remember we were in touch with the leaders for most of that season and snuck into 5th place which in them days was the last play off slot. I think we had almost double the supporters Charlton had for the ridiculously early Sunday play off semi at Selhurst park for the usual town 'flop at important stage' game.
Probably worth remembering that our front two of jockey Wilson and deehan got almost 40 goals between them that season! | | | |

We had a bit of a dose of the 'can't beat the top teams' disease that we have currently.
Very few points taken from the teams above us that season. Derby, Pompey, Leeds, Oldham. We beat Leeds I think at home but that was pretty much it, being beaten at home by all the rest. No surprise we went out to the First Division side in the play-offs. | |
