Who remembers our first season in division 2 in 86? 20:08 - Jan 5 with 5501 views | nodge_blue | I remember that Bobby Ferguson thought that our defence should be good enough in that league to just play 3 at the back. But rather than it being 3 centre halves playing close together like we see today, it was more like one centre half with two full backs playing quite wide. I think it was Irvin gernon I saw trying to play there and it was woeful. It was dropped after awhile but was really odd. That's what I think I remember anyway. I'm not imagining that am I?

That's insane. Only 6 years after being voted best team in Europe. Must be noted, Ipswich's population back then was smaller. The likes of Pinewood, Thorrington Park, Kesgrave, Martlesham all growing/being built in the last 30 years helps. To be honest we've only started to get regular 15,000+ from 1998 really. I remember a lot of horror no shows throughout the 90s but can't think of many consistent ones after 1998.

Who remembers our first season in division 2 in 86? on 17:46 - Jan 6 with 541 views | waveneyblue | I started going regularly from March 2016 - I was 13. So yes, I was there when we thought we were staying up after beating Oxford 3-2. I remember that first season really well right up to the Play off with Charlton - Didn't Cooper save a penalty in the home game that finished 0-0. As mentioned, we then lost the second leg 2-1 to begin our marvelous play off record that currently stands at 7 semi final defeats (over 2 legs) and 1 win ! TWTD

It's also worth remembering that football in general was in decline in the 80s with poor stadia and in particular low crowds everywhere.

Who remembers our first season in division 2 in 86? on 14:33 - Jan 6 by nodge_blue | I went to that. Horrible game. Police came into our end before kick off and videod people who they thought looked trouble! Also remember before kick off Charlie woods was on the pitch and lifted up a bone dry dustbin size divot from the pitch before disgustingly replacing it. |
Yes I remember standing on the open terrace that was the Holmesdale Road end after leaving on the coaches at stupid o'clock on the sunday morning. And yes Jim Melrose scored with 2 headers in quick succession. Afterwards we played with a bit of urgency when Steve McCall scored a late goal but overall was pretty p1ssed off at the end as we thought we would go back to Division 1 at the first attempt. If my memory serves me correctly it was also Tommy Coopers and Steve McCalls last appearances for town and bobby Ferguson's last game in charge. Bit sad as it seemed like the last bits of sir Bobby's time in charge was coming to an end. | | | | Login to get fewer ads
Who remembers our first season in division 2 in 86? on 18:37 - Jan 6 with 496 views | Bluedandy | Grimsby at home, first game back in old Division Two since the 60s and we scraped a 1-1 draw. Grim reality check. A few weekends later Shrews at home, dreadful 1-0 win played in front of 9K. Another grim reality check. Then losing 2-0 at Charlton in what was the first ever play-off season (we were inept); 11 years later at the Valley we were equally inept in the 2nd leg. That was it .... Bobby Ferguson was replaced by John Duncan who took Town nowhere but was a managerial genius compared to Lambert.

Who remembers our first season in division 2 in 86? on 09:30 - Jan 6 by Radlett_blue | 33 including 2 League Cup goals. My real point is that I thought Deehan was a woeful signing at the time, especially swapping him for Putney. Seemed a bit like one of the dodgy transfer deals between Robert Maxwell's various clubs. |
Putters couldn't abide Bobby Ferguson (or 'Mad Max' as he was known). I think the final straw was when Putters got an award (must have been Player of the Year or similar) and Ferguson tried to belittle him in front of the other players by saying he had only won it because he had blond hair. Fairly typical of Ferguson's abysmal man management skills.
