Who remembers our first season in division 2 in 86? 20:08 - Jan 5 with 5498 views | nodge_blue | I remember that Bobby Ferguson thought that our defence should be good enough in that league to just play 3 at the back. But rather than it being 3 centre halves playing close together like we see today, it was more like one centre half with two full backs playing quite wide. I think it was Irvin gernon I saw trying to play there and it was woeful. It was dropped after awhile but was really odd. That's what I think I remember anyway. I'm not imagining that am I?

Who remembers our first season in division 2 in 86? on 22:22 - Jan 5 by andytown | Think it was 1-1 yes. Other memories for me: 3-1 down away at West Brom and scoring 3 in the last 10 mins to win it. Winning 3-0 home v Plymouth just before Christmas. Missing a penalty home v Derby and then losing 2-0, thinking we still had a chance of automatic promotion if we won that one. Losing the play off v Charlton, an occurrence which would sadly be repeated over the years... |
The home penalty against Derby was Mark Brennans attempt at hitting the corner flag!

I’m sure there was a freezing cold home 1-1 with Luton too. Mitchell Thomas being outstanding. And it always seemed to be 4-3 when we played Oxford. Mark Brennan was my favourite player back then.

Who remembers our first season in division 2 in 86? on 23:11 - Jan 5 with 2197 views | The_Major | As alluded to up thread, we do have a nasty habit two games of do into a post relegation season of thinking we're going to walk the lower league. 1995: Beating Stoke 4-1, and the North Stand breaks into a chant of "We'll be up by New Year's Eve" 2002: Sticking six past Leicester in that thunderstorm, and basically booking the open top bus there and then. And as for last season...

Who remembers our first season in division 2 in 86? on 22:25 - Jan 5 by rgp1 | From what I remember we were in touch with the leaders for most of that season and snuck into 5th place which in them days was the last play off slot. I think we had almost double the supporters Charlton had for the ridiculously early Sunday play off semi at Selhurst park for the usual town 'flop at important stage' game. Probably worth remembering that our front two of jockey Wilson and deehan got almost 40 goals between them that season! |
.... forgot we lost to Charlton Did we not sell Kevin Wilson to Chelsea? I know Butcher went to Rangers

Yep, Wilson went to Chelsea which gutted me at the time. Fortunately, John Duncan's best act as a Town manager was to get David Lowe in that summer.

I echo those sentiments as Wilson leaving was huge. IMO he was easily the best striker outside of the top flight that season. And I agree that the 'camal' as i used to call him David Lowe was a great signing until he broke his leg. After which he was never quite the same. | | | | Login to get fewer ads

Who remembers our first season in division 2 in 86? on 22:28 - Jan 5 by gainsboroughblue | We had a bit of a dose of the 'can't beat the top teams' disease that we have currently. Very few points taken from the teams above us that season. Derby, Pompey, Leeds, Oldham. We beat Leeds I think at home but that was pretty much it, being beaten at home by all the rest. No surprise we went out to the First Division side in the play-offs. |
Thank you for reminding me of the Leeds 2-0 home on New Years Day I think. My 14 year old brain didn’t consider such things as points against the teams above us!

John Deehan scored 10 league goals that season, Kevin Wilson 20. The next season, Deehan scored 1 goal in 16 league starts. I couldn't believe it when we swapped Trevor Putney for Deehan - one of the worst bits of transfer business in Town's history.

My first game there was a 3-0 win against Huddersfield - I remember Ian Banks smacked a penalty against the bar at the North Stand end for them - and there were two more impressive 3-0s before the turn of the year, against Plymouth and Palace. It was a lot of fun.

33 including 2 League Cup goals. My real point is that I thought Deehan was a woeful signing at the time, especially swapping him for Putney. Seemed a bit like one of the dodgy transfer deals between Robert Maxwell's various clubs.

Away fans would get a limited amount of seats in the Portman Stand, basically where they are allocated now. It was only really when there were large followings you'd see it mainly though. I remember Swindon having practically half of the Portman Stand as well as their section in the North for a cup tie in the mid 80s.

Who remembers our first season in division 2 in 86? on 21:00 - Jan 5 by PJH | His first game had Zondervan, Atkins and McCall and nobody else that could have logically played at the back, it was midweek and we lost at home to Oldham so that is likely the game you remember. But if Zondervan was RB it was a flat back four I suppose. The rest of the starting team was Cooper, Dozzell, Gleghorn, Brennan, Cole, Deehan and Wilson |
I just have this feeling that zondervan wasn't at right back and it was gernon, Atkins and McCall in a 3 at the back

I went to that. Horrible game. Police came into our end before kick off and videod people who they thought looked trouble! Also remember before kick off Charlie woods was on the pitch and lifted up a bone dry dustbin size divot from the pitch before disgustingly replacing it.

Was a disappointing day. I remember Melrose scoring 2 identical near post headers from dead ball situations to leave us with a mountain to climb. We only got one back near the end after someone had hit the post with a sitter. We suddenly looked motivated in the last 5 minutes, but far too late. Crowd was a derisory 11,000, most of them Town. Fortunately a friend of mine was having a flat warming in nearby Brixton that day so I got on a bus & drowned my sorrows.

When I first had a ST in 1980/81 it was where the away fans are now and for a while there was a mixture of home and away fans in there. I got kicked in the back a few times by a Spurs supporter usually when I said something like 'Great vision Hoddle, right on to Osman's head again.' I think I moved to other end of Upper Cobbold(Portman) for start of 1983/84 but not sure if move was compulsory or whether home and away were still mixed.

I seem to remember the PR game was a 0-0, but Charlton ere not all that. So we went to Selhurst Park at some daft time full of confidence. Felt like a home game as there were no Charlton there to speak of. And we were desperate. If memory serves me right a carrot topped bloke called Jim Melrose scored for them twice and that was that. A sorry end to the season. As for Ian Cranson I thought he was really promising at centre half. Shame he had so many injuries. As for Deehan and Wilson, they were a good partnership. Both really professional in how they went about it.
