Pfizer is about £25 a dose and Oxford £2

UK gov should have funded the Oxford vaccine and rolled it out at £4 a squirt and made enough money to cover the cost of the pandemic.

The Oxford vaccine is actually being sold at cost price during the pandemic and once the WHO declares it's over it will still be sold at cost price to developing nations.

Hopefully it's a case of you get what you pay for. I''m getting the Pfizer next week.

Blimey.

Or should that be, "Cor blimey, guv"?

I thought it sounded familiar; it was on Countryfile a while ago. Probably either Anita or Ellie talking knowledgeably about pruning a bush to ensure optimal taste.

No, none of that foreign muck here.

I will accept however, 2 chickens or a duck.

As long as they're not those migrating types mind.

How about some Foie Gras?

The Oxford one does sound posher to be fair.

I don't like the Astra reference though. It makes it sound as though it's being knocked out by Vauxhall.

It is also largely to be distributed 'not for profit' which helps.

Pfizer would have been 5 euros a jab if we had bought it through the EU collective purchase, but the UK declined this and purchased it ourselves, but it was a sovereign jab so it is OK.

It's not that cheap but it's certainly cheaper than we are paying. Same for AZ which is weird as it's supposed to be cost-price until the WHO declare the pandemic over:

From the Guardian:

This is the list of what the EU is paying:

Oxford/AstraZeneca: €1.78 (£1.61).
Johnson & Johnson: $8.50 (£6.30).
Sanofi/GSK: €7.56.
Pfizer/BioNTech: €12.
CureVac: €10.
Moderna: $18.

In terms of development, what you say is true. I believe it's the funding for it that comes from the pharmaceutical companies.

So for BioNTech, that was developed by them for Pfzier, and I imagine it's a similar arrangement for AZ and Oxford University.

This may be a really daft question, but why do such massive pharma companies need to work with anyone else to develop these drugs? Is it simply a case of bringing more brains in during a pandemic, or is it something that happens a lot?

Just seems strange that they'd need anyone to help out when it's their only business and should be able to do it alone.

May I suggest, with no actual knowledge, that it may involve tapping into existing research that a company already holds?

As in, wasn't knowledge of the basic block of the virus shared by China that gave Western firms a bit of a head start in the first place, for example?

Did you see that program on the Oxford vaccine? I was mightily impressed that they were on their way to cracking it whilst we were finding it amusing to send Furlough Merlot whatsapps all over the place.

And one of the brains behind it sounded like she had stepped out of The Tartan House on a Saturday night.

To be honest i'm quite happy we're not part of their purchasing scheme. The one thing the government has done well is put together a portfolio of vaccines.

I wouldn't be against a link if you have one though, speaking as someone who once frequented places like the Tartan House!

I was feeling quite secure with that reply I'll have you know.

'They' (some bright people) were talking about this on Radio5 last week.

And I understood some of the words enough to convey that simple message!
