Sri Lanka vs England 2nd Test 06:36 - Jan 25 with 904 viewsChrisd

Getting very interesting with wickets falling at regular intervals. Whatever England are set to chase, it’s going to be really tough on this wicket.

Reckon we’ll end up having to get 150.

Think we will be okay with that, they’ve only got 1 bowler who looks a threat.

You might be right, however if we lose wickets quickly and Root fails then panic could set in ala this Sri Lankan 2nd innings. It’s going to be an intriguing watch.

Yes, Root will be important to England in a small chase. I've not watched a lot yet this morning but the wickets to spin suggest the pitch is spinning more than earlier in the Test.

SL 81/8, 118 ahead now.

Spinning a bit but isn’t ragging like the first test.

Sri Lanka now the favourites. Chasing over 150 will be incredibly tough

This is right in the balance. Every run tilts things more in Sri Lanka's favour. I'd probably fancy us to chase under 180 purely because of Root and to a lesser extent Buttler and Bairstow. Over 180 starts to look daunting with the ball turning on days 4 and 5.

Tricky, yes. But as long as root doesn't get himself run out, England ought to be ok with the time left.

That's a big wicket in the context of the match. Rooty delivering with ball as well as bat.

Or if Root takes all the remaining wickets, then knocks off all the runs by himself ...

164 needed to win, would have been a lot better without Embuldeniya but he's made it interesting.

Could do with the openers getting into double figures this time.

I don’t think they are to be honest, they only have one threatening bowler.

It's a low enough total that you only need one batsman to get in and a couple of others to offer support. I make England slight favourites but it's very tightly poised. If we lose Root cheaply it'll be a struggle. Ideally the openers show up and get us to 40 at least, but Sibley is looking well out of his depth so far this series and his limitations are being exposed.

One bowler might be enough, but we will see. Would be nice if our openers could contribute!

Good enough start, couple of close LBW calls in our favour. Still a chance of panic of another wicket goes down but that's offset SL's late flurry of runs a bit.

Yeah very solid start. I'd have taken 46-1 at the start of this innings. Bairstow will always get runs so if he can stay in for a bit then it eats away at the total.

And Buttler is exactly who you want in this situation too

To think people spent years telling us Buttler couldn't play red ball cricket. Admittedly he didn't help himself at times but that is an excellent innings.

A very good Test win.

Haha one of them was me!
In fairness I always thought a middle order of Stokes Mo and Buttler was wrong and that influenced my thinking about him. I’d still like a proper keeper back there.

That was a great knock from him to be fair. Stayed in through the innings, kept the scoreboard ticking over, and let the more eye catching batsmen take a few risks to get the total down. Textbook run chase in the end really.
