England win toss. Very big advantage on these pitches.

Well England have totally thrown this advantage down the drain. England have banked on the pink ball doing a bit under the lights, we'll see what it does do!

The way Axar has bowled, Root may actually have some success with the ball on this track though.

It's a stupidly long tail, not that Bess would necessarily have added many more runs.

Alcohol is the answer but I can't remember the question!

Evening session, new pink ball. If it hoops around all over the place we might get a first innings lead*.

* manage some damage limitation.

This is really frustrating.

Crawley was looking a million dollars this morning, creaming it for 4 with ease & now we're 112 all out.

Need to bowl them out for less than a lead of 50 to be in the game I'd say.

First-class average of a bit under 24 (not sure if that included Tests or not) still seems low to me for a Test match 7. Last time I saw him for Sussex he was batting at 9, but that's a little while ago. By way of comparison, he'd bat 9 for Essex, or possibly 8 (depending whether he was above or below Simon Harmer, who has a slightly better average and 4000 first-class runs), so he seems at least one place too high. (I'd expect the Test side to have a stronger batting 7,8,9 than a county.)

Archer has scored runs in the IPL, but batting in a Test match is a very different ball game. He doesn't appear to know whether to play a few shots or try to play properly & his Test batting average of 8 seems to reflect that. He has scored runs in 1 day cricket, but he looks no better than Broad, which means that England have a very long tail so 250-5 can easily become 300 all out. Obviously Archer isn't in the side for his batting, but I don't see Broad, Anderson or Leach as any more capable, although Leach can block.

He is batting at 8 - Foakes is 7

OK, but I thought originally Leach, Broad, Andersson, Leach and Pope would all have batted below him, which would put him at 7.

Stokes blatantly trying to claim a slip catch there when he must have known that he'd shelled it. Not just footballers who try to cheat, eh?

Followed by the sarcastic 'how could he possibly miss that?' laugh afterwards. And why is Root having a go at the on-field umpire, when he was the one who gave it out? Not a good look at all.

Why would Ollie Pope, a specialist batsman, play below Archer, a specialist bowler?

I have a feeling the pitch will suddenly appear fine when they bat!

But love your optimism!

Why the hell have we 4 quicks and India 3 spinners. Madness!

My (very) bad - I was getting him very confused. (I was gratified to hear someone in the studio discussion say 8 'is a bit high' for Archer, but still, the mistake is mine.)

Think 8 is still too high for him - As you said earlier the tail for a test side is too long.

Looks to be a very poor decision, at present, but let's hope we can get a few wickets in the twilight.

And in a bizarre twist, I turn on after being out and those two wickets happen instantly.

Not sure that England are likely to out-spin India so hoping that Anderson, Broad & Archer bowl them out was probably a reasonable gamble. Stokes hardly seems to bowl these days, hence the need for 3 other seam bowlers unless the wicket is a dust bowl.
England won the first Test not because we out-bowled India, but because we out-batted India. We've virtually lost this game again because of poor batting - it you only make 112 batting first on a reasonable pitch, you're screwed whatever bowlers you pick.
On another topic, why don't we play all Tests on grounds which have floodlights with the pink ball, so we can end the nonsense of the umpires taking the players off for bad light?

What is the point on these pitches?

3 days isn't a test match and that's likely all this will be. Vaughan was even saying it could be 2 days earlier.

I understand that they want the best pitches for their own assets but it should still be with the aim of getting to 4 or 5 days.

I'm not sure it's quite such a "home pitch" thing. It's a fact that home advantage appears to have increased in Test cricket & that many more Test matches are only lasting 3 or 4 days. One big factor is that tours these days are always short, with few, in any, warm-up games & a chance to acclimatise to local conditions. Secondly, most Test batsmen also play a decent amount of white ball cricket, so few have the mentality to dig in & play a long innings.

I've been watching all day. Really disappointing from an England perspective. Our batting just fell to pieces after Joe won what should have been an advantageous toss. Crawley was sublime but everyone else were batting in a different world. The Indian spinners did what Indian spinners do, we were simply way short on batting ability against it. In the field we were so far behind the game we became desperate to make things happen, & they didnt. Anderson looked like he is 38, Broad just couldnt get anything from the pitch, Archer bowled way within himself, Leach was excellent again I thought. It looks like we failed in the selection mindgame, & will probably fall to glorious defeat on day three.

I know it's not easy to run in and bowl express pace all the time, but something about Archer just ambling in like he often does, really winds me up.

I called it right on Root didn't I? Is Axar Patel any good or is he just an Indian Michael Yardy benefitting from we dodgy pitches?
