The irony 07:31 - Feb 27 with 5337 views | muccletonjoe | Comes from the fact , that after 2 and a half years , Lambert might have finally coupled a team with a system that appears to work. Just as strong rumours surface of a takeover bid and a change of manager. Another good performance today and I would strongly recommend any future manager to keep riding this wave until may at least.

The irony on 08:27 - Feb 27 by gordon | A disjointed 0-0 draw at home to a mid-table team, albeit on a decent run? It just looked acceptable because of how awful Northampton was, and generally how cr*p we are these days. |
I thought the defensive and midfield thirds did ok against Oxford. The attacking third was shocking, however.

The irony on 09:44 - Feb 27 by The_Flashing_Smile | See my reply to You Bloo. It obviously means 2 in this instance. |
Unless I’m being thick, “a couple” means two whilst “a few” is three or more.

Indeed, that's what I thought. And given the context of more than two meaning our cr@p games, I obviously meant literally two.

The irony on 09:43 - Feb 27 by The_Flashing_Smile | "often" Not always, then? I clearly wasn't referring to Northampton, seeing as EVERYONE thought that was one of our worst ever performances. |
Which games you were referencing was not my point. My point was to address the assertion that "couple" is only ever meant as "two". That was it. Nothing sinister. Not trying to devalue the points you are trying to make nor imply a tacit support for the view of others. Just a point about English usage.

If only there was a word that could unambiguously refer to a whole number greater than one but less than three.

As ever with these things, context is all. For example one might answer the question, "How many beers did you have?" with "A few". What "a few" means will depend on the understanding of the person who asked the question, which may be at variance with your own understanding and, indeed, the absolute reality in arithmetic terms. I was once told about Suffolk counting whereby there is only one absolute number. It went something along the lines of: 1 couple couple o'three a few a fair few the best part of a tidy few Logically one might expect "a tidy few" to follow but this was never explained to me. The point is that each of those "numbers" beyond 1 could vary depending on the context.

I didn't say "couple" is ONLY EVER meant as "two". I'm not an idiot - I appreciate Herbs point that when you say a couple of pints you don't literally mean two. The context is important. In that context you're lying!

You call me argumentative, but what are you doing here dragging this out on a pedantic point? Three, in this instance, would've meant the Northampton performance - which everyone, including me, slated as absolutely terrible and one of the worst ITFC performances ever. So I obviously meant TWO. I probably used "couple" as it's a bit less formal, more chatty. Nothing more.

Ok then. You win the internet. I am Herbs' agent (the name's Balm, Bee Balm. "Sage", you say? No that's someone else). It was obvious that you meant "two". You didn't just make a common error which allowed your point to be taken down tangents like, well, like this pedantic one.

FFS, why does everyone think I want to win the internet?! I'm just trying to be correct! You've said yourself above that context is all. Now you've said it's obvious I meant two. So what is this still going on for? As I said above, I probably used "couple" as it's a bit less formal, more chatty. I didn't really think it through this deeply!

That's not a few. That's a lot. I go by the rule of .... 1 beer = a beer 2 beers = a couple of beers 3-7 beers = a few beers 8 beers+ = a skinfull
