Woolfenden & McGuinness 08:39 - Mar 1 with 3327 views | IPSWICHFANITFC | If what is being said that Gill and Walker have been selecting the team for the past 2-3 games and to not have either CB on the bench for the last 3 games makes me wonder there's something in this? Do Gill and Walker not rate either CB or?

Woolfenden & McGuinness on 09:37 - Mar 1 by IPSWICHFANITFC | I don't disagree with your view on Woolf and McGuinness, I just don't understand why we haven't had either of them on the bench in the last 3 games. I would like to see Woolfenden - Wilson going forwards. I think that could be a partnership for a maximum of 2 seasons maybe. I'm not convinced with McGuinness like you, but he isn't our player to develop beyond this season so he could probably phase out. I think Downes is rarity in a dying breed of midfielders. A player who plays aggressive and plays on the edge. I don't really see the role of a 'defensive midfielder' or 'attacking midfielder'. I would personally like my midfielder to play box to box - defend and attack, be aggressive and win the ball back, retain the ball but look to pass forwards, get up and down the pitch. It's old school and I think that's Downes. He's not a player I'd limit in the modern game because he's got so much to offer. |
Completely agree re. Downes. I wouldn’t want to discourage that tenacity, but it needs to be channelled correctly and it comes down to decision making. Know when to leave a foot in and when not to, pick his battles and lead by example. He’s a lot more than an ankle biter, he’s genuinely a very good footballer which needs to be his focus, with that edge propelling that influence on games. When was the last time we spoke about any of his contributions in a pure footballing sense? He cuts a really frustrated figure to me, walking a tightrope and too preoccupied with the personal battles. One of many that Lambert failed, which given his playing career in central midfield is a shame. Downes / Dozzell should’ve thrived under him, but alas he’s a dreadful man manager. Hopefully Cook can get him going. Not suggesting he’s in the same league but I would like to see him modelling his game on a Gerrard type. He risks being a Luke Hyam mk2.

Woolfenden & McGuinness on 10:00 - Mar 1 by hype313 | I actually think Chambers has been tarnished by the banter era brush in all honesty, His time here has coincided with the terrible tenure of Evans and for a long time he was used as the scapegoat rather than the fans looking at the bigger picture. Yes he's made mistakes and costly ones too, but he has also been a rock for us and when you hear of stories from academy players and new arrivals about how he welcomes them all in, he has been the glue that has kept this ship from veering way of course. |
“ During our relegation he was an absolute rock off the pitch. Holding the team together behind the scenes.”

Woolfenden & McGuinness on 10:08 - Mar 1 with 450 views | NthQldITFC | Whilst Nsiala and Wilson have been fantastic (especially both coming in together after reasonable time out) and just what was required, the likes of Woolfenden and Ndaba have to be the future, particularly in a hypothetical second division campaign. McGuinness still has a lot to learn as a centre back, and his timing and decision making is often poor, although he does have a lot of headroom to improve in, but not here ideally.

Woolfenden & McGuinness on 10:21 - Mar 1 with 436 views | Parsley | I wouldn't worry about not having a CB on the bench, it's rare to sub a CB during a game and if there is an injury Chambers can come in and someone else can play RB (although saying that I don't think Matheson was on the bench last game either)

Woolfenden & McGuinness on 08:57 - Mar 1 by C_HealyIsAPleasure | Chambers form at CB hasn’t been woeful since our relegation season. He was pretty much ever present last season when we had one of the best defensive records in the league and indeed independent analytics such as WhoScored rated him as one of the top CB’s in the division We also spent much of this season with a perfectly serviceable right back in the squad who Lambert had no intention of ever playing, seemingly owing to a historical issue from his time at Villa. Said right back is now starting every week for another team in the division. And besides, it was the same manager who elected to sign McGuinness on loan and then pushing the experienced centre back out to right back, rather than just signing a right back in the first place |
What is it with us and RBs - should be one of the easiest positions to fill? yet we seem to have struggled ever since RK binned off David Wright!

Woolfenden & McGuinness on 08:45 - Mar 1 by clive_baker | To be fair to them, on this seasons evidence Woolfy has been well short and although I like the cut of McGuinness’ jib, he’s made mistakes and has a lot to learn. It’s so frustrating watching him go through the back of forwards time and time again, he makes it so easy for the ref to give free kicks. Wilson and Nsiala have less potential but they’re also less raw, Wilson especially is street wise. Downes is another one who winds me up, it feels like priority 1 is being aggressive and walking like he’s carrying 2 rolls of carpet, and priority 2 is the football. He needs to switch that and he can be a quality player. [Post edited 1 Mar 2021 8:48]

I agree, unless he channels it correctly then his disciplinary record will prevent him from getting a move. He's very key to our lightweight midfield though, and I agree that he does walk a tightrope far too often and gets preoccupied with the personal battles - but it's that playing on the edge that might just get him going in games. Under Cook who likes the 4-2-3-1, then I can see Downes being Cook's Sam Morsy. He will like Downes - gritty, tenacious, not afraid to get stuck in but it's important that he's partnered with Dozzell too. A CB pairing of Woolfenden and Wilson protected by Downes and Dozzell in front of them is solid for me whilst also building a strong core around our 3 most important youngsters and developing them into valuable assets at the same time.

Woolfenden & McGuinness on 10:53 - Mar 1 with 364 views | pointofblue | Completely agree that Woolfenden has suffered playing next to McGuinness and I would have much preferred a Donacien - Woolfenden - Chambers - Kenlock backline through that period. Downes hasn’t looked the same since he picked up an injury against MK Dons.
