Can Cook & the takeover persuade Downes to stay for another season? 10:14 - Apr 14 with 2102 views | Steve_M | He's had a poor season, mainly through injury but also his own stupidity in getting sent off against Northampton but has still been one of our better players (yes, low bar I know) when he had played. He was certainly our best player last night and his post-match reaction has the right approach: https://www.eadt.co.uk/sport/ipswich-town/flynn-downes-on-ipswich-town-wimbledon I hope so but might just depend who comes in for him.

Can Cook & the takeover persuade Downes to stay for another season? on 11:29 - Apr 14 by Deano69 | Tricky one as I wouldn't want to fall in the trap of building just a side that can perform and progress from League One. We need to already be thinking ahead and build for Championship football at the very least. I cant disagree with the thought that AD is a 'nice to have' at this level, but if we are serious about progressing I suspect he (on his day) is exactly the sort of player we should be trying to attract. |
I'm sure that will happen and there will be far more forward, long term planning going on. But do we think Dozzell can thrive and then make the successful step up and be a key player in the Championship? The jury is out for me on that front.

Can Cook & the takeover persuade Downes to stay for another season? on 11:44 - Apr 14 by Iwasthere | Under our new ownership i am assuming that we will be able to recruit on the same terms as many of the championship clubs regarding wages. This in turn should add quality to the squad and influence Downes to stay, maybe with the potential of a new contract. I like many others am bitterly disappointed with our current squad. Looking on the brighter side, if we had achieved promotion this season we would be panic buying players, at inflated prices, to stay there. Next season gives us a chance to recruit for the longer term, hopefully get promoted to the championship and have a solid basis to compete there. |
What makes you think we'll be paying Championship wages? Championship sides regularly pay £20k plus to players, the top sides pay double that. We aren't going to be paying those kinds of salaries as a League 1 club and nor should we.

All sounds great IN THEORY. Orrrrrr he just goes to the Championship anyway, on decent wages to a team that already has a decent and settled squad. Its a no brainer for me. If people think investment = magic formula for success, I'm afraid football isn't like that.

It's not really up to him though.

Can Cook & the takeover persuade Downes to stay for another season? on 10:27 - Apr 14 by hype313 | I'm ambivalent toward Dozzell, I remember feeling quite disheartened when the talk of Norwich taking him for £5m was swirling around, now I just think his career has stalled, He's a nice to have type of player, but we can't carry nice to have's in this league. Hope he does push on, either here or elsewhere, but if his name was Andre Smith I think you would find a different view on him from the majority of fans... |
"Stalled"? He's 21 and he's going to play 40 league matches in a season for the first time in his career.

Can Cook & the takeover persuade Downes to stay for another season? on 11:59 - Apr 14 with 372 views | MB26 | He's future captain material. The discipline issues do get mentioned a lot which I understand but generally he will get a booking but he's only been sent off once in the past two seasons (unless you count the pre-season headbutt at Cambridge). I'm dreaming of a midfield partnership of Downes and Lee Evans at the base of a 4-2-3-1 midfield. I was supportive of the lad and I respect his ambition to play at a higher level because quite frankly he's the most talented player at he club and deserves to play higher. I hope he stays though.

Teams such as Rotherham, Coventry, Wycombe, Millwall etc do not pay players £20K per week.. Admittedly some of the YoYo clubs do, at least for a couple of seasons then end up with us in L3

Two of those sides won't be in the Championship next season though. I also expect Bart will be on around £20k a week at Millwall, that's what we were paying him. We may just compete with the newly promoted sides and one or two bottom feeders but the idea we're going to be spending Championship money generally is rather fanciful. We'll be signing players mainly to get us out of this league with the hope that some of them have the potential to kick on and be competetive in the second tier.

Can Cook & the takeover persuade Downes to stay for another season? on 10:32 - Apr 14 by gordon | Think that we have quite a few players who would look like world-beaters in a competently run club, with good coaching, tactics and conditioning / fitness work. Downes, Bishop, Woolfenden, KVY, Nydam, Dozzell, Kenlock etc. |
World beaters ahahahahhahaaaaaaahahahhaa

Post of the Day on 13:15 - Apr 14 with 310 views | unstableblue | Keeping Downes happy and at the club is one of the summer's highest priority. What I liked about Downes last night is that run, and his general energy. Also his comment that he won't sleep tonight. Top footballers take games and winning VERY VERY seriously. There is a desire. Son for Spurs looked besides himself after that Man U loss.
