Where could I retire comfortably with around 2000 quid a month? 11:30 - Apr 24 with 13723 viewsnoggin

I'm considering binning the rat race asap, which is in 5 years time. I estimate that I will have around 2 grand a month but no more than around 50k capital after selling up. I'm single and fancy living somewhere with a decent climate and where I can get by speaking English to begin with.. Preferably in Europe.

Very easy and tempting to suggest somewhere like Thailand, but the reality of packing up and moving somewhere is quite different to a visit I would say. I've lived in a few different countries, mostly for work and I do love seeing other cultures, but I've ended up back in the UK. Largely because its the only place that truly feels like home, and I have family here. As others have said, proximity to the UK is an important factor if you want to be able to 'pop' back. If you don't then that's a different consideration.

Some exotic suggestions on this thread but I've not seen France mentioned. Property is cheap (relative to UK). You could get a place for £50k if you shop around, it might need a bit of work but France has a good climate, excellent food and wine, and you would find your £2k would be ample to cover your living costs and have a nice lifestyle. Not to mention close to the motherland should you wish to pop back.

Here you go, get your paintbrushes out and spend a few months leisurely bringing this place around and you'll have a lovely home. *Worth noting you can probably add about 15% - 20% to the advertised cost of a property in France to cover fees.

There's plenty of places in Spain where you could buy a flat for your 50 grand and live brilliantly well on your 2k a month, including plenty of trips back to see family and friends when you want to. Menu del Dia, 3 course lunch including wine can be found from around a tenner and not more than 20 quid in very decent places.

Every reasonable sized town in Spain will have lots of English speaking ex-pats. But if you wanted to learn the language it would make a big difference.

If your prepared to be an hour from the coast then your 50k would stretch a lot further than you might think to buy outright, or as a sizable chunk leaving you with a little to find from your 2k each month.

This is what I'd consider. Buy some farmhouse in the middle of nowhere and cycle 3 hours a day in the hills.

As long as there is a shop within 5 or 10km it's not massive problem. Spain is beautiful inland.

I know that was then, but it could be again..

I'm looking at Cyprus. Property and cost of living are cheap and I would pay almost zero tax on my pension. The first 19000 euro is tax free, then 20%, or you can choose to pay a flat 5%. Sounds very attractive. Anyone here lived there? I've only ever spent a couple of days at RAF Akrotiri so never really seen the Island.

I'm intrigued by the 'key features' listed.

Are internet connection and mains drainage not common in France?

Also, it comes with a cave??

Many of the more rural places have septic tanks.

Its own cave is a given of course and I'm surprised they've even bothered to mention it.

How on earth are you going to go on the piss at 5am? In a small town like Sligo there are 2 'drinking clubs' open to around 6 ish (they have no pub sign outside, just a buzzer you press to get in). The 'early bar' then opens at 6 am, think in theory it for sailors or something but in reality it's where all the misfits who refuse to let the night go end up mixing with the early drinkers. It's a true cultural experience

Yeah but are you able to hit ping pong balls that have been fired from a Thai birds lady garden at other customers?

I'm so proud to say that I've actually done this

Quality thread btw Noggin, really enjoyed the info on different places. Best of luck with whatever you decide to do - I'd definitely go with the camper van idea.

Uurrmm, it's not something any of these venues are really renowned for but it's quite possible if you asked really persistently at 5 am someone would fire a ping pong ball out of an orifice for yer

I might seem like a bit of a weirdo though?

One of the best clubs I've been too was in Ireland, Ennis, with a ratio of about 5/6 girls to every guy.
