Where could I retire comfortably with around 2000 quid a month? 11:30 - Apr 24 with 14101 views | noggin | I'm considering binning the rat race asap, which is in 5 years time. I estimate that I will have around 2 grand a month but no more than around 50k capital after selling up. I'm single and fancy living somewhere with a decent climate and where I can get by speaking English to begin with.. Preferably in Europe.

Definite have genuine memory issues as it happens. I suppose it was quite obvious that you would bump into them what with Australia being quite small.

Where could I retire comfortably with around 2000 quid a month? on 16:13 - Apr 24 with 2513 views | fab_lover | First of all, I'd say that to retire "comfortably" on £2K / month, that should mean actually "living like you want to live" on £1500 / month. Unforeseen things happen, and you'd want to be able to have a savings pot to deal with those. The main question is how tied you are to the UK in terms of how often you'd want to come back here or whether being >24 hours away if there was an emergency would be an issue. The second question is whether you want to "settle" anywhere permanently or, for a while, see what the world has to offer. The obviously contenders in terms of bang / buck are SE Asia (there's plenty of Thailand that doesn't have sex tourism) and South America. There are shedloads of websites on where one can live for $2000 / month, worth researching. In your shoes (because I won't be long after you - 7 years to go, touch wood) I'd be looking at several years of staying 3 months somewhere, then moving on, unless of course you fall in love with the place and want to stay for longer. I think the real issue will be "where do you want to settle down in" because then residency / buying property issues are likely to come to the fore. Anyway, the good news is that even on £1500 / month there is so much of the world you could be in and have a very nice life, thank you very much, that you could spend the next 5 years researching and still not have completed the task. And the best of luck to you.

I've been to Bali a few times. It's nice for a holiday but not sure I'd want to live there. Rush hour last 8 hours each day as the roads are so inadequate. Each village is effectively its own local Government. The rest of Indonesia in my experience is a bit less straight forward for Westerners. I'd probably go for Malaysia. Weather's great. English is pretty widely spoken and Bahasa is easyish to learn. It's great value too. Here is an article on Penang. I've been there once a few years ago and it was really nice, but incredibly hot. Like insanely hot. https://www.cheapestdestinationsblog.com/2020/04/21/cost-of-living-in-malaysia-e [Post edited 24 Apr 2021 17:59]

Where could I retire comfortably with around 2000 quid a month? on 18:13 - Apr 24 with 2420 views | ClareBlue | I've been to most European countries and live on the west coast of Ireland but originally from Yorkshire. The west coast is absolutely stunning on a day like today with bright sun and around 20oC, and the beach we were on had nobody else there and plenty of night life in Galway and Limerick, but you would be lucky for 30 days a year like this, the rest of the time it is rain and wind. The wind is worse than the rain. So not somewhere for retirement on a fixed income. It's not cheap either - running a car is very expensive and generally the cost of living is 20 -30% more expensive than UK when you factor in health costs and all your services etc There are 3 places I am considering 2nd houses/retirement 1. North Macedonia - Skopje - Modern 2 bed apartment 50-70 a week right in the center 2K would put you in the rich category - climate great, people friendly, can travel the Balkans no problem - safe as anywhere. No problem with English people or people speaking English. They still love the English here and will make you welcome. 2. Albania - Tirana - this is the best city in the Balkans - it is absolutely humming at the moment and you will be a king on 2K. Easy sea access to Italy or south to Greece. Rent for 50 E a week something posh. Eat out every night for under 10 E with wine. 3. North Romania - particularly Cluj - great value and a two university city with all the culture that brings. Easy access back to UK with regular flights or to other areas of Europe. English commonly spoken and plenty of English in the city. Not as friendly as North Macedonia, but will make you welcome. 2K will not make you the riches but certainly enable a nice apartment and good life style. Climate and be a bit stormy in rainy season but generally very pleasant. Plodvic in Bulgaria would be another one to consider Good luck - I think it will not be long for me either, I'm counting down the months which is a sign just to feck it off and finish, I think and stop counting. One left at University for me.

Thailand as others have said Nogs. Changmai in the north is brilliant, my dad lived there for 13 years. Every 6 months take the bus up to the Myanmar (Burmese) border to renew yr visa. And you might get lucky like he did and hook up with a 22 year old girl from one of the hill tribes. So cheap there too, you will live like a king on yr income.

I went to Penang 10 years ago and wasn't that impressed with the place tbh. In fact when I arrived at the hotel I went straight to the bar and was taken aback when a pint was £6. Even though I had paid for the hotel I genuinely considered jumping on a minibus to Thailand as I couldn't think what the bar bill would be after two weeks. In fact being a Muslim place there are a distinct lack of bars. Not sure I would like to retire there, food is good though and people are friendly enough.

Pluses for South Africa. Cheap beer. Nice grub. Climate. Scenary. Animals. Language. Time zone. Housing. Infrastructure. Outdoors lifestyle. Downsides. Security. Massive inequality. Very nearly settled there few years back, had an offer on a house but it fell through sadly.

No lack of bars when I went a few years ago. Really nice atmosphere in Georgetown and the beach resorts. You probably just went a bit before it got on people's radars. [Post edited 24 Apr 2021 22:29]
