Where could I retire comfortably with around 2000 quid a month? 11:30 - Apr 24 with 14098 views | noggin | I'm considering binning the rat race asap, which is in 5 years time. I estimate that I will have around 2 grand a month but no more than around 50k capital after selling up. I'm single and fancy living somewhere with a decent climate and where I can get by speaking English to begin with.. Preferably in Europe.

I've been here for 15 years now, so will get a relatively decent pension, compared to the UK. Norway is expensive though and my life has been pretty unstable so I have very little capital in my flat. I won't be able to live here unless I work until I drop. To be honest Scandinavia is all a bit safe and sterile for me anyway. It's great for bringing up kids but unless you love the nature, it's all a bit dull.

Ref. Your first sentence, in Norway you are entitled to a pension after living here for 5 years. I believe even foreign prisoners get a pension if they serve more than 5 years in prison in Norway. Welcome to Scandinavia. [Post edited 24 Apr 2021 22:43]

Oh really? When I went into Georgetown I found a couple of bars and they both warned me to watch my wallet because foreigners were regularly mugged. I have to say it was my least favourite holiday. How much were you paying for a pint

I went there some almost 30 years ago and found it a lovely place to be. I was sort of passing through and only stayed maybe a week. Cracking food everywhere dirt cheap; lots of stalls but also some nice restaurants. Bumped into a dozen Aussie squaddies one evening and went out on the piss with them, did the rounds and ended up at some seedy club or other. I had to leave my hotel in disgrace the next morning, walking some gauntlet with the staff and owner either glaring or shaking their heads at me.

Not been through the thread Noggers but if it were me in your position I'd be tempted to find a place I wanted to settle in later life and buy there. I'd then set off and go wherever the mood took me. You could spend months in India and/or Thailand/ Vietnam etc for half that monthly income and put the extra aside for the places you'd need it. Spend a few years having a wander whilst you could.

Camel mate. That's the way to go. If a camel loses it you might get a nasty nip, but it's unlikely to tear down some main street creating the same kind of destruction an elephant might cause if it's having a bad day.

£2.50/£3 maybe. Nothing memorably high or low. I spent a week in Batu Ferringi and had a great time there. Went to Siem Reap a few years ago. If getting smashed for the lowest possible price is high on the agenda. I wouldn't look beyond pub street. Some places are £25p a pint. I stayed in a lovely 7 room hotel with a pool and it was like £28 a night. The temples are amazing too.

That's only half a step up from a camel! I think the novelty might wear thin. It's a bloody big place with some pretty damned awful roads.

Absolutely! Everywhere throughout Rajasthan, being a desert region. Dunno about elsewhere really but would be surprised if their services weren't used elsewhere too. Assuming not so much in the North, probably not much use for camels too far up there! Edit: Although I wasn't serious about using one to get about on, just in case... I would definitely use motorised transport, and maybe rely on those who are used to the lunacy of the roads to get you about. [Post edited 24 Apr 2021 23:50]

I know you were kidding. I like the idea of India but I find extreme poverty difficult to walk amongst. I would end up giving all my money to some kid outside the railway station.

If you've got an emotion in your body it's heart breaking at times. Although some little so & so was trying to polish my trainers with black shoe polish against my will while I was standing in a queue at the train station in Jodhpur. He clearly felt he had a captive audience and didn't see the need to ask for permission! I took a number of basic stationary items with me which were well received by a number of children.

Where could I retire comfortably with around 2000 quid a month? on 01:01 - Apr 25 with 1160 views | ArnoldMoorhen | There's plenty of places in Spain where you could buy a flat for your 50 grand and live brilliantly well on your 2k a month, including plenty of trips back to see family and friends when you want to. Menu del Dia, 3 course lunch including wine can be found from around a tenner and not more than 20 quid in very decent places. Every reasonable sized town in Spain will have lots of English speaking ex-pats. But if you wanted to learn the language it would make a big difference. If your prepared to be an hour from the coast then your 50k would stretch a lot further than you might think to buy outright, or as a sizable chunk leaving you with a little to find from your 2k each month.

I went at the beginning of 2019 For context, it was all expenses paid business class on emiretes via Dubai, 5 star hotel etc with an armed chauffeur I got out of the airport (wearing town shirt) and was immediately accosted by a guy with literally 0 clothes and who looked malnourished. I was literally about to offer him My bottle of water when my guard whisked me off to the hotel. He told me that I’d get that a lot. He wasn’t wrong As we got to the hotel there were 10 foot walls with guards and gates . They checked the car boot before we were allowed in . I asked why and i was told “to stop the street people getting in” As I got into the hotel it was all marble, 5 star, the smells of flowers filled the air, sports cars lined Up . The rooms were as opulent as you’d expect A rest period later and I asked to go out and se some of the sites, I was put into the car and it was locked. As soon as we got out of the gates, people were coming up to the car window and holding out their hands. I was told to ignore them. I felt sick. But worse was to come. I’d asked to see the local beach . Truth be told I wanted to say I’d put my feet in the Indian Ocean. On the way there we passed what I can only describe as building sites, with kids, no older than maybe 4 or 5 , butt naked, searching for food in bins. At that time , I could only think about my own 7 year old back home and what he has. I’m Not an emotional person but that image haunts me To this day. A brief walk round a temple later and I went back to the hotel. This time There was an old lady with her eye and an arm Missing, begging for food. again I was told to ignore the The contrast between “rich and poor” was never more striking. When I left, I gave my chauffeur a 50 Quid tip. I later found out that was about 6 months wages. No wonder he was excited and crying . Would I go again? Absolutely. Did it make me appreciate what I have. Without a doubt
