Where could I retire comfortably with around 2000 quid a month? 11:30 - Apr 24 with 13719 viewsnoggin

I'm considering binning the rat race asap, which is in 5 years time. I estimate that I will have around 2 grand a month but no more than around 50k capital after selling up. I'm single and fancy living somewhere with a decent climate and where I can get by speaking English to begin with.. Preferably in Europe.

Use your money to buy a posh camper van, travel around to all the destinations you fancy in Europe.
When you’ve decided, sell the camper van. They hold good money.

How on earth are you going to go on the piss at 5am? In a small town like Sligo there are 2 'drinking clubs' open to around 6 ish (they have no pub sign outside, just a buzzer you press to get in). The 'early bar' then opens at 6 am, think in theory it for sailors or something but in reality it's where all the misfits who refuse to let the night go end up mixing with the early drinkers. It's a true cultural experience

Yeah, I know that sort of thing goes on. When I was last there I asked the landlord what time he closes and he said September.

I'm not having a dig at Ireland but a couple of joints with a bell and frequented by ne'er do wells isn't my cup of tea for a well earned retirement - especially being a single man.

I mean, it's completely off the scale. You have to be some kind of odd bod to want to retire there.

You could live in most of England (other than London and its immediate environs) for less than that and still have money for travel. Depends how you define "comfortably".

South Africa would be reasonable on that income. Ghana, Zanzibar, Malawi or Namibia.

I know for SA you need a retirement visa - costs a few hundred quid and is renewable every 4 years. No idea for the other places.

50k wouldn't get a palace so you'd need to be flexible on location.

Problem with Malta etc. is we are now not EU passport holders (unless you are) so have no rights to residency.

Portugal - the easiest for citizenship / residency, you just need to spend 5 years there and you get permanent residency*

Croatia would also be on my list

I wouldn't worry about the language - everywhere you go you'll find people who speak English, especially in main cities - locals but also ex pat communities. They will most likely be the people you connect with the most to start with (from all walks of life, not Brit gammons). Every major city has an expat Facebook group, and they are a fantastic resource

*assuming you don't have EU residency already

THe other good thing about Portugal is the tax incentives. First 5 years it's like 10%. Goes up after that but still cheaper than the UK.

Is that for anyone who moves to Portugal? Sounds perfect as the first 7 years would be the most difficult. After that I get my state pension.

You could also buy a well equipped camper for £20-£30k and live as a nomad. Once a week on a site to clean your clothes - have a decent shower.

If I had a European passport would be very tempted myself tbh

Must admit they are quite confusing.

I haven't been over there for a few years but there was this famous chic who was quite stunning (but probably with an 8" boner) called Emma.

I spotted her outside The Marine bar one night and wow, he / she was amazing.

Everyone has their own choices but for me I just hate the countryside, give me the hustle bustle of a big city every day of the week, it excites me. Ireland would send me fecking nuts.

As someone who has travelled a lot and laid my hat a number of times, mark my words Nogs it always ends up in a routine and an element of 'Same old, same old'. That might be a sense of restlessness and a desire for new experiences that was constant in my younger days though. It's often not just the place but the people you meet there, and the friends you make. You could be in paradise but it might be full of pr1cks and boring as hell.

Would definately go for the campervan and travel around for a while mentioned on this thread. Best advice I could give is not to have any preconceived plan or a list of boxes to tick. Go with the flow and just see what happens ..... Make it up as you go along. My best experiences just happened!

It's actually a cracking idea and would suite me down to the ground, I could buy in to the nomad thing. On a much smaller scale when I was a pedlar I used to go from town to town and it's a great buzz.

Algarve is hard to beat. Use your 50k to pay the bulk for an apartment (you'll get something decent for 80k) and enjoy life on your 2k a month.

Weather always good, people friendly and it is relatively cheap to live when compared to the UK.

Think you need to stay 183 days a year to be resident. Have a google, read it this week, but it was for Brits on retirement Visa. For Brits need an investment for a home.

Not sure what it is for Europeans. But I do know Portugal is more Brit friendly than Spain at the moment. Algarve is lovely, as is North coast.

I like the place, I've been fishing over there. Spun around the place and it's ok for a week or so but to live there??

How on earth are you going to go on the piss at 5am and get some tucker?

I mean seriously, where could you even get a soapy?

It's a bad lifestyle choice IMHO. Noggers deserves better than that.

Edit; I am genuinely shocked that it's even a suggestion. These people need locking up.

Brilliant Lucan!

I know Thailand pretty well as I had a mate who lived in Patong who I visited regularly. Through him I got to know lots of the local Brits and heard some stories I tell you. Constant tales of Brits being ripped off and losing everything. I knew a number of ex pat bar owners who had constant hassles from the Thais. Both the authorities and local gangsters. Then there was the fact that nearly everyone had such a severe drink problem they were only just functioning. My mate used to always say that you had to have your wits about you as life was so cheap there.

On saying that my mate used to have threesomes til he got bored with it. I'm convinced that he moved on to ladyboys but he denied it.

He was going to leave Patong in search of a quieter part of Thailand but he sadly died suddenly of a heart attack at 59 a couple of years ago.

Using your parameters;- £2k pm, £50k capital, climate, no language problems, single person, Europe

Without having visited them would go with suggestions of Cyprus and Malta due to climate and "English" language used widely. But as for how far your money goes...?

Really like the camper van idea, may well do that myself. But would imagine that it's attractiveness wains after a while.

Outside of Europe - Lagos has suggested Africa, Lucan Thailand.

May I put forward Colombia?
£50k = 250million COP and should buy a decent place: town, country or suburb

https://listado.mercadolibre.com.co/inmuebles/fincas/venta/tolima/_BEDROOMS_2-2#

For £2k a month in Colombia you could enjoy the lifestyle of £8k a month in the UK
Plenty of places with a good climate (avoid Bogota)
Whilst not widely spoken many are keen to learn English as they want to live in USA

As for single life
