For office workers that have worked from home... 10:50 - May 6 with 2573 viewsclive_baker

Over this crazy period, has anyone had any direction on what things might look like post Covid by way of office time vs. WFH?

Seen a few examples of companies closing offices altogether, a notable FTSE company is trialling a 4 day week, various businesses I've heard are saying 'we work better together', so it's back to the office 5 days. Many taking an approach somewhere between the 2.

We're trying to figure it out now at my place, and as an SLT we've landed on 3 days in the office as an expectation, and 2 days WFH if people want to. Feels like a fair enough compromise position to me, but wondered what other experiences people have had?

Think we’re going completely flexible and only expected in the office if we need or want to meet face to face. Sounds great to me, I would hate to be told I need to be back in for x days a week when it’s been proven over the last 14 months that it’s not actually necessary anymore.

I think we will continue to be majority of the time WFH, with an emphasis on collaboration when we do go into an office. Hoping that our offices will transform to be more hot desks and meeting spaces than just banks of desks.

I think it'll be utterly bizarre to go back to an office full of noise and meetings face to face with people after this. I've been recruiting throughout and think it is much more efficient to interview people over video conference than in person.

I prefer interviewing in person still. Gives you a chance to break the ice over a cup of tea and you get to see how they interact with other people in the office. Always have to ask the receptionists about any candidates' attitudes as well, for they know all.

Easier to interview but much harder to train them remotely I would think?

Yup, training and management difficult - I have had people working for me for months who I've never met in person.

Big issue I've found is that diaries are much fuller as every conversation now has to be a call rather than just a chat at a desk or over a drink. Creates much longer days as there isn't much time to do any work, and doesn't make for much downtime to check in on new starters or to take them for lunch or whatever else.

Did not renew the lease on our office and changed our contracts to permanent home workers.

Mixed about it as some days like it others hate it.

Do you think you or others in your company will miss the social side of being with others when working and being able to grab a quick beer after work?

I wonder if full WFH over the longer term when there isn't a pandemic might cause issues of isolation for some people.

Please note that I did not resort to the textbook 'your mum' response and I am a better man for it.

My wife has effectively been able to change from a retail side job to a head office based job, which were previously only available to those able to commute to Northampton or Swindon - so she is now full time WFH.

Her previous retail based job is now fully WFH - with new contracts enforced on people to have the same availbility as call centre staff - i.e. 8-8 Monday to Saturday
